105 lbs down 10 months out - before & after pics one year apart
Alfie replied to skinnygirlwithin's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
trying to figure out what strips are? lol -
Hi Sara, slow and steady wins the race as they say. I do not yet have the sleeve but I am getting it on December 9th. I'm having my lap band removed. Have had some trouble with it over the 6 years that I've had it. The doc unfilled me completely about 3 weeks ago and I am holding on trying not to gain weight. I wish us all the best. Alfie

Hi I'm from NY also and my date is Dec 9. Going from band to sleeve. God bless us all!! My doctor is from South Nassau Communities Hospital.
-
My BMI is 35. I am banded and will be getting the revision to the sleeve on December 9th. Can't wait.

Hi Kristine, thank you so much. I don't know how to use the PM but I'll check it out. Maybe the problem was from my end. I'm doing good but not as good as you lol! hugs Alfie -
you can do this! And you're doing great so far!!

Pre Op diet for 10 days. Type 2 diabetes and NEED a meal...will I screw it up?
Alfie replied to Jeffrey Eliot's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think anyone here can't answer because who can tell you to go against doctors orders. That being said, I am also type 2 diabetic. Keep a close tab on your sugars and if it's too low, tell your endocrinologist to advise you on how you should be taking your medication. That might be why you are feeling so bad as someone else here said. -
Just had a gastric sleeve 17.10.14
Alfie replied to duperkal's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi there. If you're worried that he only cut a little and left a bigger sleeve, I would have a sit down with him and tell him your concerns. I'm not sleeved yet but I am banded and I think what others are saying is on point but I would still speak with him to settle your mind -

Alfie replied to mentalistfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Best and worst "compliments"
Alfie replied to Healthier2day1227's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
How about this weird ...uh compliment? From my younger brother when I lost a lot of weight before (right now waiting for my Dec 9 sleeve.) "Oh my gosh you're emaciated" and in the next breath "you look wonderful" lol apparently emaciated = wonderful looking!! Around the same time a very close friend said "Don't lose anymore weight or your face will look very old." In the meantime, I was still 60 lbs away from being at the high end of a normal weight. -
I had another appointment today with the bariatric doc and he disagreed with that decision of no surgery with Barretts Esophagus. We discussed it at length and he advised me that he feels I can still have it after looking over a few of my personal stats. The main one being that before being banned I had not had one single episode of acid reflux/heart burn. It's not 100% definate that he will do the sleeve, but he feels it is very likely and my date stays set at December 9, 2014. He'll let me know once I get my result from the biopsy of my esophagus. Needless to say, I am overjoyed!!
-
Hi, thank you for the response. He hasn't yet discussed anything with me because I was at the very beginning of my journey. I would not get the bypass; I'm too afraid with the malabsorption and the rerouting of intestines. I still have not been diagnosed with Barrett's but am due for the next endoscopy in November. Everything is kind of on hold until then. I wish you all the best with the sleeve; I've heard many positive things about it.

So last night I went to dinner with an old friend who had moved out of state. I wasn't going to tell her about my upcoming surgery but we got on the topic of weight and so I let the cat out of the bag...big mistake. She was saying that she has eaten so much on her vacation and was thinking she will probably gain weight. Anyway, she said "Alfie, when you really want to lose the weight, you will" and "when you set your mind to it, you'll do it" and "you have to lose weight with those co morbities, so you really need to do it". I answered her at first but then I thought what the heck I'll just let her talk. I know she meant well and doesn't understand. I felt like she was basically saying that I've not tried hard enough to lose the weight and that was frustrating. With over a hundred pounds to lose and being 60 years old with a 30+ year constant struggle, those words just got me totally annoyed. Rant officially over!! Thanks for reading.

PLEASE rethink surgery! it's cancer causing, do the research :(
Alfie replied to harringm13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know this is an old thread but I just want to say that I may have Barretts. I was given an endoscopy yesterday and my esophagus was very "beat up". The reason I got the endoscopy was because I was going to revise to the sleeve. What the OP said is true; the band can lead to problems with the esophagus and mine is proof of it. I saw the picture and it looked pretty bad. I am on meds now and have to follow up with my gastroenterologist for a followup endoscopy once the swelling goes down (he removed all the Fluid from my band). And other than some acid reflux here and there, I didn't feel anything. My advise is to make sure you go for your checkups to be sure there is nothing going on. I stupidly didn't go to the obesity doctor since 2010 and now I'm paying the price. I feel so foolish because if something happens to me, I will only have myself to blame for not followng up just because I felt fine. -
Did you originally have the lapband?
-
Thank you so much. That is very encouraging to hear.
-
thank you so much for your prayers. They are very much appreciated.
-
lol you may be right. Ever since my husband passed away 3 years ago I call them "My 3 Dads"

I'm from Queens NY. Not banded yet. Looking forward to meeting others in Queens.

I have another issue that will come up. I hate to keep surgery from my three sons. One I definately can't keep it from because he lives upstairs from me. I trust him completely and also his wife. I trust my other sons too but just two of the three wifes. The other one feels the need to tell the world everything about me and everyone else soooo I think I'm going to just tell my one son and his wife. Any thoughts?

that really stinks. I feel her pain. She has all these people against her decision. Maybe best to just shut down and not say another word to them. Thank you for your post, it helps me to know to keep my mouth shut!!
