  1. When is your appointment? I just wrote a blog about my first appointment so I could get it out of my head. I'll write another about all the questions I came up with. Maybe I'll post it to the forum too.

    My Story

I’ve had weight issues my entire life. I’ve dieted and exercised successful... for short periods of time, before the cycle began again, bringing with it depression and self loathing. There are so many reasons I overeat. It’s a distraction, tasty, comfort, protection… and it’s killing me. This is the second time I’ve considered wls. The possibility of death scared me away. This time around, I realize that If I don’t lose weight, I’m going to die anyway, and it will be slow and painful, not to mention, the life I’m living now... it’s not living. I went to a wls orientation a few weeks ago, and this coming week I have my first appointment with a surgeon. From there, I'm not exactly sure where this is going to go. I know there are evaluations, approvals, insurance approvals, procedures that I have to get through before I can have surgery. Right now, I'm just trying to learn as much as I can so that I can make an informed decision for myself and if I do go forward with surgery, I wont be so horribly surprised by what happens after.
  3. Had my first appointment with my surgeon - it was AMAZING! I now have a binder that I need to carry around with me to all my pre-op appointments. Still haven't been officially 'approved' for surgery; I guess that's what all the appointments are about.

  4. Thanks! I couldn't sleep but when I calmed down, your answers, along with the 30 others I came up with in the hour our so before my appointment, made me look 'intelligent' to my doctor. She didn't bat an eye when I pulled at my list and even thanked me and told me not to apologize when I tried. I just really want to go in to this with my eyes wide open with appropriate expectation.
  5. Is like to have the sleeve. I haven't been able to sleep at all... smh
  6. Wondering if there is a group of those who were above 300-350 when they had their sleeve done. It seems that the majority of the people I have encountered so far, were under 300 when they had their surgery, and while I'm sure their experience is helpful, I am really interested in the experiences of those closer to my own weight as it seems like they (the few that I have found here) have lost a bit faster than those under 300. Which totally makes since, as the larger you are, the more energy it takes to move that mass which in turn means calories burned, which means a greater loss... or something like that. And, I do realize everyone looses at a different rate; it seems that there are a lot of similarities to losses. Man, that last sentence is so 'stalkerish'.... why yes, I'm stalking your stats. No judgment, please understand, I'm just trying to make an informed decision. The quicker I am able to lose weight during the first part of the loss, I guess the, HoneyMoon Phase, the more encouraged I will be to take the plunge in the first place. Does that make sense? Knowing that I have my first appointment with my surgeon this week, which also means that I will be given my diet plan, and scheduled for all the other post-op appointments, the head-hunger is out of control. And, the only person who knows I'm considering this is a couple of friends that have hand wls and my mom. Everyone is so busy that I don't have anyone to talk to about this and so I have all these thoughts rolling around in my head. And the only way I know to make that stop is to systematically start looking for answers... making my head busy with other stuff... Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. Please feel free to send me a private message if you don't want to post publicly; I know how sensitive these subjects are.
  7. Ahhh, there are some of us out there! Awesome. I'm weird, but even though everyone is different, just seeing the raw numbers some how encourages me... and calms me. I meet with my surgeon tomorrow and hopefully will get my pre-op diet. Fingers crossed!! Anyway, thanks for the info, peeps! You ALL have done amazing, and I'm so proud of you! And, I can't wait to join you!
  8. Looking forward to my appointment tomorrow and getting my 'official' before weight so I can post it. I really want to lose about 50# prior to my surgery, but doubt that's obtainable. Just want to get a jump start. ;)

  9. Isn't one of the Proteins in matrix, Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten? I wonder how that effects someone who is Gluten sensitive. It's the first time that I've ever considered what the Protein source was.

    Pants on Fire!

A friend had surgery a couple of years ago. When asked how she's losing weight, she says, "a lot of pain and hard work" (all true depending on how you look at it) and leaves it at that. I think I'm going to take that approach. So far I have only told my mom, who is also considering having the surgery as a cure for diabetes and a couple of friends who have already had the surgery. I have yet to mention to my best friend or boyfriend that I am contemplating this, and to be perfectly honest, I don't want to tell either of them. Not that I don't believe they wouldn't be supportive, but because I don't want them to slip and tell someone else, but because my boyfriend and I plan on moving in together this spring/summer, if I do have surgery, he's going to have to know.

    Hunger

That's really interesting. I'm more of the, "Yum, pizza, I'm hungry!" and that thought is unrelenting until I actually eat something. This tells me that obesity really is a 'disorder' if not a true 'disease'. I have no idea what I am going to do about the head-hunger and that terrifies me!
  12. Wow! What an amazing post! You all have such wonderful stories, and Kia82, you should be very proud of yourself for all the positive changes you have been making! Can't wait until I am on the road to a new me!
  13. It just hit me.... While I've been excited that I have my first appointment with my surgeon, and I'm anticipating being given my pre-op diet and appoints scheduled... she still may not 'approve' me. That would be devistating.

Anyone taking silica for hair loss?

What?! 50%?!! I've already had some loss from a total hysterectomy last year, which always happens to me when I have surgery; my mom says it's from the anesthetic. Anyway, in relation to wls, I've heard that not getting enough Protein for your body is the reason for the hair loss. I'll have to keep the Biotin and silica in mind. I have a biotin/silica shampoo that my mom go through Swanson's Vitamins... hmmm...

    My fitness pal app

I'm not sure how to add you, but I'm fit2Bme2014 and you and anyone else can add me. I'm just not using it yet, though with my first appointment with my surgeon this week and the reality of having to start the pre-op diet, I'm going to need to start tracking, if even for the novelty of it.
  16. For me, when I have my surgery, I want to use an app for a bit to get back in the swing of counting calories, Protein, etc, however, I don't like the idea that info is available to others who might get all judgy about it. Wouldn't it be nice if they came out with a Bariatric SPECIFIC tracker!
  17. I'm not sure how accurate that information is. People have been eating meat for thousands of years. You have to do what's best for you.

    First appointment

My fist appointment is Tuesday, it's only supposed to be an hour, and I don't have any restrictions. It will be interesting to hear back from you or others as to why your appointment is different. Good luck!!
  20. I haven't had surgery yet, but my research seems to indicate that it's caused by not getting enough Protein. So, while there may be a minimum amount of protein that you need to get a day, you might consider speaking to your NUT and increasing your protein. Good luck!!
  21. I agree with you. I'm really interested in their start weights (especially those over 300#s) and how long it took them to get to where they are. It gives me more 'hope' to be able to 'see' those stats. So, I'm trying to make sure I keep my profile page busy and up to date.
  22. Scared about Self-Sabotage and how to deal with Head-Hunger. I watched an episode of, “My 600# Life” and it seemed as if the gal was TORMENTED by the Head-Hunger. There are times when there is nothing in the house and I wanna gnaw my hand off so I find anything, even if it’s something I normally don’t eat, to eat, to make my head shut up!

Keep busy...drink plenty of water. Head hunger lessens as time goes on. At least mine has since I have the sleeve.. Pre sleeve. ..yes it is tough. But if u r rep hired to lose some weight prior to surgery ..then persevere.

Thanks. My surgical appointment is in a few days, and knowing that I will have to start my pre-op diet, the head-hunger is off the charts! I've eaten so much to day that my tummy huts, and still my head is like, "more, more my precious, more!" Smh

    3 week pre op diet

I'm actually looking forward to the pre-op diet. I want to lose some weight before surgery so I am a bit ahead of the game. Am I weird?
