    March 1st 2014, I will be 4 years out and living in maintenance. All the trials and tribulations of surgery behind me. Life has settle down and routine has taken over. My yearly visits to my surgeons office are pretty uneventful. My lipids are stable because my Vitamin regiment is stable.
    What I chose to eat is also routine. I don't veer off my food list very often. Boat loads of fruit and veggies, chicken, salmon, etc.. I try not to incorporate different foods in my plan because that seems to be where I get into trouble. I slice and dice, add spice and bake, sauté, crock pot, and broil the same foods just different ways with different spices and flavors. But I found very early on that if I incorporate different cultural foods into my eating plan is where my troubles can begin. for instance, I had to give up (American) Italian food..we all know why..lol. I had to give up most French dishes, we all know why..not that these cultural dishes don't have healthy choices, I just wasn't makin'um. So to eliminate the drama I cause when I veer off, I don't veer much. Food is now a lesser priority then before, is all. When my pouch cries, I first drink Water, just to make sure it's not thirsty first, then after that, it still tapping me, I feed it. At this stage I can pretty much tell what my pouch wants, I seldom get thirsty in the mouth anymore, its my pouch thast thirsty, took me a while to recognize the difference. Strange as that sounds it's a fact. My pouch is its own childish entity. At this stage I have also recognize the difference between my brain wanting food and my pouch wanting food. In order to be a successful GBP (Gastric Bypass Person) you have to get to know your body, listen to it, and tell it NO if you have to. I think I'll end this here, I'm a thought blabber..lol..I'm sure I'll be writing more. Its nice to have a place where my babbling might actually help someone..lol..thanx for listening

    Veggies packed with protein: These are staples in our house, among a lot more
    1 avocado - 10 grams
    • 1 cup broccoli - 5 grams
    • 1 cup spinach - 5 grams
    • 2 cups cooked kale - 5 grams
    • 1 cup boiled peas - 9 grams
    • 1 cup cooked sweet potato - 5 grams

    • 1 cup lentils - 18 grams
    • 1 cup refried Beans - 15.5 grams
    • 1 cup garbanzo Beans (and hummus) - 14.5 grams
    • 1 cup pinto, kidney, black beans - 13-15 grams

    • Quinoa is versatile and delicious. 1 cup - 9 grams.
    • Amaranth, bulgur, brown rice, wheat germ, oat bran are other grains with a high Protein content.
    • oatmeal - 1 cup = 6 grams.
    • Sprouted grain bread products like Ezekeil - Buns, tortillas, bread. Pack a sandwich or a wrap and you'll get 7-10 grams from the bread alone.

    this is just a fraction of Protein packed foods I eat on a day to day basis..so see when you start eating NEW FOODS, here are some to get started..just a tiny example

    This all sounds very civilized..lol..Me, not so much. I was a power drinker. I don't drink at home, to much to do, and get down. Im a crafter/creator, so drinking at home is out the question. But get me social-mod AND ITS ON!!!!..WHOOOO HOOOOO!!!..UNTIL!!! my pouch said "I DONT THINK SOOOoooo LITTLE LADY!!!! back it up, or I'll DO IT FOR YOU!!!..sometimes and my pouch fight, I call it names, it ignors me!!!

    Well Warren PhD..here I am..a BONIFIED sugar addict! full responsibility & no guilt, just fact. scientific actually. Great Doc I had.
    MY PhD and I have worked very hard to come to the finale, the finish line if you will. it will never end, but I know where the line is now.
    I had (and still do) trigger foods, and triggered sweets. Long long story short..We, together discovered my triggers, which lead to other triggers, which lead to other triggers. Once established, she left it up to me, to either disregard the Pasta's,breads & chocolates (refined carbs) altogether, or learn discipline and moderation. I chose to not have sugar or process flour products in my life. That's discipline, not willpower.
    You are right about the 7 rules. . 6 out of 7 I do religiously, and I am also a case study in my area for a nation wide obesity study. My surgery was 3/1/2010-Gastric. I wanted my sugar/pasta 'addiction' under my control before I had my surgery. If having a 'politically correct' word for food addicts makes you PhD's feel self important for coining a new phrase for the Webster dictionary, by all means, give a prettier name. But I know what I am, I have live it for a very long time. Now I don't, but it will always be there with me, just like an alcoholic or a drug or sex addict.

    This thread is going to be very embarrassing for me, but I've talked to ALOT of women who are 8 or more years out on this subject, wished I'd of talked to them sooner!!!
    Before surgery I was warned OVER AND OVER again about alcohol!!!..did I listen, NOOOOOOooo. I was going to be the ONE who drank like she did before, This is the ONLY issue I REFUSED to listen to, I didn't want my surgeon or the PhD's to get in my 'Cup'. I did give up beer, only because of the carbonation, but what was I thinking, I wasn't!!
    About a year out, I thought I was safe, I was a miraculous 115 lbs, entering 'Maintenance" , had my Vitamin regiment down pat. blah blah blah. Feeling accomplished. BARTENDER!!! vodka martini please!!! first one, feeling good, whooo hooo...did a body check, no pain in the pouch, cool, BARTENDER!!! Vodka martini Please!!! People, I don't even remember leaving the establishment I was in. I opened one eye, head pounding and my husband standing at the foot of the bed shaking his head!!!..OH GOD!! what did I do!!!...well apparently not much. One minute I'm sitting there socializing, next second, I'm on the floor. I was a complete puddle, he carried me to the car and poured me in. out like a light!!!..I consider that episode a fluke, wont happen again, I'll drink something lighter
    DING! round 2: GNO aka: Girls Night Out.
    This time I decided I'd better get a strategy. I'd eat first. well this time I ordered my fave: White Wine..loveeee my wine, or I did. 1st glass, good, milder and lighter than the martini, slower to get a buzz. good strategy. yay me, figured it out. Drank a glass of Water in between, good, no pain in the pouch, not to buzzed. 2nd glass good, THIRD GLASS, BAM!!!! Hit me like a tone of bricks, this time I didn't fall out, but my buzz factor incapacitated me, I knew I couldn't get up and walk. crap! I whisper to my gal pal, to take me home. EMBARRASING!!! ok fine, I get it, I don't need round 3 to teach me anymore lessons, I'm not hard headed. But I do miss hitting the Vino till 2 A.M. So I do have 2 glass on whatever with a Water back, and call it a night, or if its a dinner party, I drink water for the rest of the night, I mourned, and still mourn my 7-8 glasses of vino on GNO'S. thanx for listening, embarrassing as that was.

    Hello Cherry..My lowest weight was 113, I'm now 115. I don't see to fluctuate much because I am a stickler for what I put into my body. I take this surgery a bit to serious I think. Mostly because ALL processed food makes me sick and dumpy. bread, Pasta, Rice, Sugar, Dairy, and potatoes give me a instant heavy doey feeling in my stomach. Horrible feeling, Its my pouch that decides what its going to eat, and I listen, basically. I don't push the boundries of my pouch. My feeling is this..My surgery was a God Send. A once in a life time chance for me to get it right this time. What an UNBELIEVABLE gift, don't you think? There is no way in hell I'm missing this train again! My health and family are to important to me, plus I'm sexy as hell now..lol. So to answer your question, my weight is stable because I eat 'mindfully and exercise regularly'. This body feels better than food tastes!! My weight does go up and down on its own, strange as that sounds. 5 lbs up sometimes, 5lbs down. I use to that now.
    My pouch stretches depending on what I put in it. Seems I can eat platters full of fruits and veg, and don't get sick, just very full. When I have 4 bites of mash potatoes or bread I feel like I'm going to explode. So I think if you eat lots of processes garbage/dead food and sweets, Ice creams, cakes, I think you get the FEELING like its stretching. I think you can train any thing to stretch if you abuse it enough. Very sad state of affairs if you can accomplish that. Why have this surgery if your going abuse all the hard work it takes to be healthy. I never understood that? Addiction I totally understand, I had a sugar one. But all addictions can be cured. Disease's on the other hand are a bit trickier. But I don't remember ever hearing mineless overeating & bad health was a disease?
    And your last (awesome) question. I am 54, and here's something I this is quite amusing. when I'm in 5 lbs up mode (120lbs) I have my period, its like my body knows, and jumps up 5 lbs, when a week or so later back to 115. When I'm stressed and over tired, or just now up to par, I go down to 110, weird, the body has its own way of coping with what's going on around it. So don't freak out if one morning you wake up and your 6 lbs heavier. Specially if you did nothing to cause it. Its one of the nature of this beast. I don't know if it happens to men.

    It just makes me so unbelievably angry and sad..years and years we all sit around with our friends & families, and talk about how fat & unhealthy we are, how we all need to lose weight, how we need to get to the gym or just start exercising...and when ONE of us seriously decides to do something about it..and ARE doing something about IT..the "Seven Deadly Sins" take over our friends & families? , and the "Ten commandments" go straight out the window..Funny, we humans, quite contradictory we are, and much hypocritical . I just want to cry for you, I really do!

    While this is soooo not funny..I had to smile a bit..I'm thinking, not many people have this problem..But I will say this..4 years out and I haven't gained more than a pound or 2 on the up side, but on the down side, I have (accidently) dropped down to 110 lbs, it happens when I have to much going on, I'm running myself ragged, and forget to eat, I remember to exercise, but I forget to eat..I think a lot of people on here cant relate to that yet.
    I don't get hungry often, so I have to remind myself to eat. Breakfast is NON NEGOTABLE, I eat breakfast no matter what I'm doing or where I'm at. But the rest of the day is a fight to remember meals.
    I do want to slow down though, that seems to help, but since I lost the weight, I cant sit still, 'mI constantly doing something..my poor husband, he says we need a intercom in every room so he can just stand in the kitchen and call me on a wall unit..he taken to texting me of my where abouts in the house lol..So I don't know if its the same thing..but I do have to be vigilant about feeding times, or the scale starts to slide downward..I don't want to be a bag of bones!

In order to be a successful GBP (Gastric Bypass Person) you have to get to know your body, listen to it, and tell it NO if you have to. I think I'll end this here, I'm a thought blabber..lol..I'm sure I'll be writing more. Its nice to have a place where my babbling might actually help someone..lol..thanx for listening

    I am not going to give any advice here. I did no do it. I tried it, my body said CUT THAT OUT, IM DROWNING OVER HERE!! I'm probably the only one person who told my WLS instructors that, that part just aint gonna happen. I'll drink when I'm thirsty, and ended that discussion. Never been dehydrated. but I drink a lot of other things, coffee, tea's, crystal lite, all day long, just not by the gallons like they recommend. just saying. Lots of people panic on this subject. I truly believe that's to much Water for one body to handle. 4 years later I'm still drinking when my body tells me to, I seem to be just fine. but that's me, do what you think is right for you.
