How long did your hair fall out?

for three months or four months mine came out a little, a lot and then stopped. I cut it short. I was mentally ready for it but still fretted a lot.

    Confession

It's interesting to read your post. I was 240 when I started preparing for surgery. I was so done overeating. Done thinking about food and letting it be what I used to celebrate the end of the week or whatever it is I thought I had survived. It wasn't my reward if it was making me miserable and unhealthy and most definitely defeated. I was 220 on surgery day and today 17 months later I'm 186. I've gotten down to 174. I've struggled since Easter to get back on my wagon. Sugar is like heroine. Talking my self out of eating it is like battle. It can't be in my house and I have to keep syntax nectar and yogurt close to help curb cravings. I was about 185 most of my life. I wonder if my body likes a set weight of 185? I don't even have to eat that much to gain. I am not accepting the idea of my body liking a set weight. It's hard now but way easier than it was before. I am happy. My surgeon is happy but I told him I know I could get down to 160. I could step it up. So I'm working on it. Thanks for writing your post.

What is Your Goal Weight at 5'5

I'm 5'6 and my goal weight is 150. I've settled at 176. I'm going to have to work harder to get the rest off. I'm fine with that. I'm not sure what weight my surgeon would suggest as goal. I'll ask next time.

    Jumping to Conclusions!

That's lame that some of the responses were harsh. But I agree I like reading honest authentic posts with real issues we deal with every day. So keep it up. If I shop with my kids sometimes they want to go to in and out and I'll get a burger take two bites and bring the rest home to my husband. I am super happy because I don't crave it anymore. I don't really care where we eat. I really enjoy being with them. It's all good.

Totally frustrated and don't know what to do

Yeah! I was happy to read your last comment after reading the whole post. I would do it. Wait I did do it. It's been good for my family because I am not miserable anymore. People ask me what changed and I tell them well I lost 60 pounds and they are like it's not just that. I think they can see I am free of the weight. I have more control over what happens with it. I am happier. It's not an easy way out. It's work every day.

    Second thoughts.....

I was pro sleeve. I had the sleeve. My gurd is better but not gone. My friend had bypass and she's doing great. It used to freak me out the bypass process but now it seems the same. I wouldn't be as concerned and if the outcome is no gurd that's better. I had sleep apnea and refused to where the mask. I chose surgery instead. It seemed like the first thing I lost was the neck weight. I was sleeping better soon after. I know not everyone can quit the machine right away. I wouldn't give up after coming so far.

    Help always hungry!

I ate more at first. It took my brain a while to get out of the over eater mode. Now a year out I have less or little hunger. It could be mild heartburn. It can seem like hunger. Carbs and starch won't fill the sleeve, they slip through. Fish and chicken will be filling and last longer. I use Greek yogurt to curb old cravings. But watch the sugar. The weight loss or gain shouldn't be a concern yet but knowing your eating too much is just something to be mindful of. I still have to mentally work at it everyday. I agree with the fluids as well. The bakery would make me nuts. So good luck:)

    Help!

That sounds like a hippa violation to me as well. And the advise......yikes. Any more input from staff and I would be like why don't you go to HR and get my surgeons information then go to an orientation seminar and after that we can talk. I'm a year out and I remember opinions could feed into that fear of surgery. But I was always like I got this, I'm strong. And now I say the same thing I knew I got this. It's awesome.

    Depressed

It is so depressing the liquid diet. I remember those weeks. Looking at the progressive stages from liquid to soft and thinking really 4 weeks? The sleeve is so grumbly until it heals. It will be a few months to heal. I fussed a lot in the beginning but now I eat a lot of yogurt and two shakes a day. The other meals I eat with my students then family I choose the good stuff protein fruit veggies. A carb only if it is insanely worth it. Sugar never is worth it. I'm 10 months out:)

    Painfully Alone in This

My husband brought home McDonald's for my son after my surgery. I didn't think it was nice but it didn't smell good anyway. I did explain to him that it wasn't cool. He knew I would be making changes but didn't really understand. I had to request that my environment be crap free while I was healing. We have a lot of work to do after surgery. Whether people understood that doesn't really matter now. But it is nice when people who are your support actually support you. Her choices of food giving are interesting. A bit passive aggressive. It will hurt less as you get stronger.

    Two kinda stupid questions

I was offered a binder. It was great. And ear plugs is a great idea. Outside my room another door opened and shut all night long. A popular room where they kept all the meds. You don't need much because it all goes by fast.

WHY AM I LOSING SO SLOW!

I was sleeved January 22nd and I'm 58lbs down. It was more difficult for me to get a grip on controlling my head hunger at first. Now it's getting easier everyday and I'm shrinking. I'm 178 the last three weeks.

    Caffeine withdrawal

I drank tazo wide awake tea. I had to. It was still hard but I'm into the ritual. Morning of surgery just water.

    How to fight HEAD HUNGER?

I was sleeved January 22nd 2014. I didn't have trouble getting in 70 grams of protein. I used the protein shakes with milk that I bought from the doctors office for the first month. Cornerstone brand. After that I used syntrax nectar with water. I ate egg whites, refried beans, tiny bit of grated mozzarella, Greek yogurt. Getting enough water and fiber was more difficult. The head hunger is getting better. I can eat a tiny piece of pizza. I ate crackers with cheese for a while. I have favorite things that last for a while and then something else will come along. Right now it's oinkos yogurt. Watermelon apples. I can eat a few fries but they get yickier every time. Not worth it. Head hunger is getting better. It's interesting.

How much weight did you lose preop?

My surgeon said for me to lose weight before surgery. I was 235 when I started the 14 day preop diet. I lost 15 pounds. He was fine with that thank goodness.
  18. It seems like the first few weeks is the most difficult to follow the food rules. Your stomach is all of the sudden small but our mind thinking about food takes longer to catch up. I ate this chicken soup from our local Chinese restaurant. It was soft and comforting. I kept sugar free jello pudding stocked in the fridge if I was needing something bad. It's easier now 8 months later.

    How to fight HEAD HUNGER?

I have trouble looking at profiles so I have to ask how long you have been sleeved? I am always battling head hunger. It was very strong after surgery. My stomach was now tiny but my worries and thinking about food were still big. I had a hard time with liquid food. It was gross. Yogurt and blueberries got me through hard times. I knew it was about this mental battle. It gets better every month. I am eight months sleeved now. Every habit changes after. Friday is a celebrate eating day in my family. We made it through the week and who doesn't love Friday. On pay days we would have a special meal usually eating out. I would eat more after work at dinner time. Food was a reward of survival. The sleeve is my biggest tool in fighting these battles. My sleeve knows what to do my mind takes longer to learn. My advise would be to not just be mindful of why your eating but mindful of why your thinking about eating and why. Keep things in the fridge to help. I like yogurt. Watermelon helps although I know some people wouldn't eat watermelon. Carbs. I was thinking about the head hunger on Saturday. It was a boat day on the lake. We usually get sandwiches, and chips. not low calorie ones. At first after surgery in may I would bring a sandwich it would last all day. This Saturday I brought yogurts and apples. The whole day I kept thinking about wanting a sandwich. I didn't need one it was just the ritual. I'm over it. It gets better.
  20. Of course you have to be professional but I bet we could come up with some good responses for fun. Like yes with the help of my surgeon I am not eating myself to death. Wouldn't it be nice to have it all just happen without thought and effort every day. It's hard work. I always say I'm working hard.

    Feeling like a failure

Now I can eat a lot of different foods. It's awesome that your not having any cravings. It was five weeks I could eat salad. Water is still hard to get enough of. I use syntrax strawberry kiwi protien powder added to water. Almond milk unsweetened. Low fat milk. It will get easier. I had to keep going back to the soft food guide from the nutritionist.
  22. My daughter had that argument. Why can't you just diet and exercise like everybody else is what she would say. We have a close friend who is on the hcg diet. A shot everyday and 500 calories a day. Not doing that. I like my brain functioning at the fullest capacity possible. Then right before surgery she said she was worried I would be skinnier than her. She was crying. I told her skinny is not the goal but holding her babies someday is. She's over it now. During the first couple of weeks after surgery if I threw up she was like see I told you so. Quite the critic. She was and is a big supporter now.

    Feeling like a failure

Eggs were too much in the first few weeks. Even now they can be too heavy. So I did egg whites in soft food stage. The whole liquid and soft food stages just suck. I tried to eat certain foods and had the slime and throw up. Nothing fancy but some foods seem like they will be soft and the sleeve says no. Keep it boring. Greek yogurt, soups, refried beans and ricotta cheese. It's so hard. I'm six or seven months now and yogurt, fruit and salads are my favorite.

    Northern California Sleevers?

It's not ranting. Waiting is frustrating. The doctor was asking me to lose weight before surgery and it was hard. My food addiction and what seemed to be empty belly had more control than me. But I was 240 and lost five pounds before the preop diet visit. The preop diet I lost 15 pounds in almost two weeks. It seems like the high protein and fluids but not much else diets seem to work. I drank four high protein shakes a day and had lean protein and veggies I could eat as much as I wanted. The nutritionist plan is too shrink the liver for safe surgery. It's not a fun one. I had a friend who used Bob Harpers skinny rules to maintain her weight loss. I wish I had good advise. I watched a lot of biggest loser to get in the zone. After the surgery it won't be such a struggle anymore. I've been a slow loser trying to get used to not needing as much food. But I'm slowly getting it. I loved nurse Rhondi at eslami's office but with him I just felt like I had to jump through his hoops. He is a tough surgeon and a good one but no nonsense. I had trouble with sugar too. Now watermelon is enough. When I eat sugar I feel like crap so it's a good deterrent. The sleeve is a great choice. Just be confident in his office and work hard to get there. It is worth it. Now I can apologize for babbling:) Angelina

    Northern California Sleevers?

NurseNic4 I missed responding in time for your consult. I hope it went well. Looking back I remember he mostly wants to know which surgery you want. Then it's time to get all the tests done. Did he ask you whether you had an issue with sugar? He may recommend by pass for people who have problems with sugar addiction. Which is weird to me because in the orientation seminar it seemed like the sleeve was his favorite. Any how just checking in.
