The SADI or SIPS procedure is single. The traditional Duodenal Switch is double. Dr. Keshishian is a proponent of the traditional DS. You can read why here: https://www.dssurgery.com/weight-loss-surgery/laparoscopic-duodenal-switch/ Dr. Rollin is a property of SIPS. You can read why here: https://nwhsurgicalweightloss.org/learn-about-your-condition-and-treatment/sips

Hi, I've also sent you a PM. You're right, we DSers are a rare breed. A lot is the surgery itself and finding a competent surgeon to do it. Then there's the aftercare. You must be exceedingly diligent and your surgeon has to believe you will be. Did you suffer from osteoporosis before your DS surgery or was it the direct result of the DS? I didn't have it before the DS. It's now 11 years later and I've: 1. aged into it; 2. am thin; 3. am white; and 4. the malabsorption of the DS has been a factor. The malabsorption plays a role. It's known to. All of those play into osteoporosis. Do you get your bloodwork done be your PCP? I don't. My surgical team has good aftercare (very important, IMHO) and they do it and we go over the results (usually by email) and tweak what needs tweaking (supplements). Others do get it done by their PCP. If you plan to, make sure your PCP is on board with the DS as you'll be asking for many things to be checked a PCP might not feel are needed unless h/she is DS friendly. Does insurance pay any part of the cost? It paid for the entire DS and all my bloods. When I see doctors there is a co-pay and the same for certain tests (e.g. MRI). Check your policy. If you could go back and take even more calcium in the early stages would you? Knowing what I know now; yes. Is there a reason why you get only part of your vitamins from Vitalady? Cost. Vitalady has large doses (e.g. she sells 50K doses of vit. d3). But I can do better with cost for somethings elsewhere.

I am 11 years+ out from the full DS. I take 40+ vits/minerals a day. I buy Calcium at costco, order some vits. from Vitalady & others from Vitamin Shoppe. The costs changes as you tweak your Vitamins. For instance, I recently stopped taking something and something else just became more costly. It isn't inexpensive, but it doesn't break the bank. Plus, I know it's for life. I've never missed a day of vits. and still my bloods can show deficiencies. That's why my surgeons prefer bloods done every 6 mos. so we can catch it quickly (others prefer yearly). We then adjust my intake and look at the next bloods in 6 mos. Some people have Iron issues and take iron infusions instead of oral iron. I don't. YMMV. We all have different issues but most of us are able to correct them with correct supplementation. However, for instance, I go to a bone specialist as I have osteo. issues. They can become more prevalent due to the DS (and as you get older) so I take tons of calcium and additional osteo. treatments. Others have their own thing.

Hello. I had a IV pump so I could give myself pain meds. The pain wasn't great, but not nearly as bad as orthopedic procedures I've had. Are you having the full DS or the SADI/LoopDS/SIPS. You might want to double-check.

Sorry to hear it, but glad your team is so thorough.

Chapstick. Lips get dry in the hospital.
-
No. I can't. I don't usually eat the bun (too filling). I can eat about 1/2 a triple from McDonald's, BK or Wendy's, but that's w/o the bun. I then finish it later. I do know some DS men who can, though.

You can pretty much take anything.

Had DS Tuesday 060716, am having a really hard time taking my vitamins and drinking enough protein. I feel like I am about to vomit all the time...
Postop replied to Sheila Jones_159865's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
What vitamins/minerals are you taking? What kind of Protein? I didn't take many pills in the beginning. It was chewable things or crushed pills in applesauce or yogurt. I was on puréed foods for several weeks. If you PM me your email addy I can email you the docs my surgical team distributed for the first month postop. Maybe they can help you out. -
Happiness with overall total weight loss so far?
Postop replied to jpt.30175's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
You've done very well. That's a tremendous loss. BTW, you're not eating too much Protein. I eat 125+ mg. most days. When I want to lose I eat as much protein as I can and drink more liquid. I also lower the carbs. -

DS veterans lend me your history

Apple's right. I eat virtually no carbs in public. When I want them and/or junk I eat it in my apt. That cuts down on a gas or pooping issue. If I do have gas, I keep a small vial of perfume in my rear pant pocket to spray my butt as the smell can linger in the pants. I've also learned how to lean up against walls or squelch on a seat if I feel gas coming. I like Orange Citrus Magic for the bathroom. i have a carry size and it comes into the bathroom with me in a public place. I have no qualms about 'going' in public as long as I have it. As for the difference between the DS and SADI. Check the front page of OH today. There's an article about it. -
Sent you a PM.

Hi. Sent you a PM.

Hi Tina, I guess I'd say you should try and wrap your head around the fact that you won't be counting calories ever again. You'll be much more focused on grams of Protein. Also, that you'll be able to eat as much protein as you want so you won't feel deprived or hungry (I eat every hour of two). And, fat will become your friend. I eat full fat everything (including steak and hamburgers). It helps keeps your gastro. system moving well. Those are just a few of the things I can think of off the top of my head. There are tons more. Best of luck tomorrow.
-
I remember eating a lot of those. Just make sure the sugar alcohols aren't giving you the runs.
-
As a DSer eat however much Protein you want (of the types you're permitted at this stage). I sometimes take meds. that make me hungrier than usual. I'll just eat a steak for a snack or keep popping cashews.

YW.

Yes, it is. There was a surgery called the BPD. It's not performed any longer as a standalone. It's now done as BPD/DS.

How much missed work post surgury
Postop replied to chandras1978's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Sophie, is the fatigue from the extreme calorie deficit or from the physical surgery? I've been having the same question on time off, I'm glad this was asked You're not eating much and you're recovering from major surgery & a good deal of anesthesia. It's all of those. Plus trying to learn a new stomach. -
Hi, If you had the full DS, you should add fat. Full fat mayo, yogurt, butter, etc. That will help to 'grease the wheels'.
-
Hope it's going well.

@@Montana Gal. Hey thanks. You will, too.
