  1. I have had many stalls myself. I had my surgery on 5/27/14 and have been in a stall for several weeks. I read in your post that you are doing fantastic exercise. Don't be discouraged...you are likely replacing fat with lean muscle mass, which weighs more than fat. Lean muscle also burns calories more efficiently and of course is much healthier than fat. I also agree that you must be sure that you are consuming at least 800 calories each day or your body goes into "starvation mode" and holds onto fat. Don't worry all stalls end and weight loss does resume. Best of luck!
  2. I know it's very difficult in the beginning to meet all of the requirements--protein, fluids and calories. As time goes by, and you're allowed to increase your intake, you will lose weight quickly again. All the best!
  3. I am almost 8 months out from RNY and have had my share of weight-loss stalls. Like everyone says, while frustrating, they do work themselves out in time, A bit of advice, I know this is hard to do early in the post-op phase, but my bariatric educator keeps reminding us that to lose weight, we must take in at least 800 calories per day. Otherwise our bodies go into "starvation" mode and hold on to the weight fearing it isn't going to get enough nourishment. Thus, to keep losing weight, we must try to take in at least 800 calories per day. She also said "plateaus" are normal, and the weight loss does pick up again after the plateau is over. Don't give up hope!!

    Feb 9 surgery

What an exciting time for you. I had RNY surgery on 5/27/14 and have done amazingly well. The two weeks on the liquid diet will fly by, trust me. Now that you have a surgery date, you will find it's easier to stick to the plan than you can imagine. I was a big time food addict and had no trouble with hunger or urges to cheat. It's so exciting that you are strongly motivated to succeed! Best of luck!
  5. I am 52 and had RNY surgery 5/27/14. I did very well after surgery and continue to do well. I'm down 70# since surgery, 95# since I began my journey in Nov 2013. I couldn't be happier with my decision to have surgery and the results. Best of luck to you!

    Migraines and bypass surgery

Hi...I was a fellow migraine sufferer. After trying multitudes of medications over 25+ years, I was finally put on Topamax. It decreased my migraines, but I still had 4-5/month. I had RNY gastric bypass on 5/27 and I haven't had a single migraine since!! I was weaned off my high dose Topamax before surgery. Oh, I get an occasional headache (not migraines), and it's always because I haven't had enough water--and it is relieved by drinking more Water. What a relief, just one of the many advantages of surgery. Good luck to you!

  9. My surgery is scheduled for May 27th and I'm looking for a buddy to go through the WLS journey together. I am so anxious, nervous and most of all, excited! Looking for support.
  10. Well, here it is "the BIG day" surgery day. I have to leave in an hour to be at the hospital for 9:45 am. So nervous, anxious and excited all rolled in to one ball of butterflies! Here's to all of us...good luck and bright future!!!
  11. Eighth day on pre op liquid/protein shake diet. Going very well. It's nearly dinnertime, so today is nearly in the books. Tomorrow is my last day before surgery!! Getting so very excited, 's real now! Cannot wait for Tues. 5/27 surgery day...also getting more nervous. Good luck to you too, azreadytolose...I'll be thinking of you on Friday 5/30.
  12. Preop Diet Day #2, all liquids including 4 HMR protein shakes a day and sugar free liquids plus lots of water--I have to do this for 9 days, until Midnight 5/26 before surgery 5/27. So far, it's going pretty well. The HMR shakes are quite tasty. Looking forward to my pre op history & physical on 5/22 and surgery on 5/27!! Can't wait, so anxious and excited!!
  13. Barbbcute, Good luck with the wedding! Keep on track (time) with your protein shakes and fluids. May be difficult with wedding timing, but very important for you! I have 3 cats myself. I'm doing mad housecleaning this week to be ready for surgery too. We sound like a pair, glad to have you as a friend
  14. Hey Barbbcute,, Thanks for the reply...good luck to you as well. Do you have to do any sort of 9 day pre op Protein shake/clear liquid diet? I do for my surgeon, It shrinks the liver to make the surgery easier. I begin on May 18th. I have my pre op physical May 22. Time is flying, getting apt. ready now, buying catfood/litter/water ahead, so I won't have to carry them post op. It's ok to make me your friend...I tried and the site wouldn't let me. We can support each other throughout!! I'd like that.
  15. I have my surgery date, 2 weeks from tomorrow. I'm nervous, anxious and most of all...excited! What can I expect during the hospital stay? Any information about the immediate post-op period would be helpful. How is the recovery, on average? Having Roux-en-Y. How long in hospital? I know every case is different. Any pointers for items to take to the hospital, etc? Information, please!!

    Any May 28th Surgery's Date..

Congrats on your surgery date. I got ins. approval, awaiting my date. I'm nervous now too. You can make it through Memorial Day and all the food. Plan your shakes so you can have one when everyone else is "eating." Also, don't forget all of the sugar free drinks like boullion, Propel, etc. you can have (if allowed on your preop liquid diet--they're on mine). Remember, it's mind over matter. Have faith in yourself, you will succeed!
  17. I began my WLS journey with my information session 11/22/13. After many appointments and much information, I thought I could lose the weight on my own this one last time. I did lose 38 pounds--but I've gained 13 back. I've been exercising like crazy, but bingeing in the evenings. Today, I got my Approval Letter from my insurance company and I couldn't be happier. Now, I need to know what the average weight loss is on the 9 day liquid/protein shake diet preop?? I am at a BMI of 36.6 and if I lose too much, I won't qualify for surgery. What is postop like? Really painful, or tolerable...I have a high pain threshold. Any help answering questions would be appreciated!
  18. I began the pre surgery (RNY) journey on Nov. 22, 2013. I weighed 250# at 5'6". I've been through almost all of my Program's/Surgeon's preop workup. As of today, I have lost 38# following the mindful eating and other principles of Bariatric surgery. I fear my Medicare Advantage Plan may deny my surgery. Is it possible to succeed without surgery? I have tried many, many times to diet and have yoyo'd. I don't want it to happen again. Suggestions?? Should I still plan for the surgery?? Any feedback would be appreciated!

    Just scheduled my initial consultation!

Congratulations, you'll be surprised how quickly everything goes from here and how fast time flies. I am scheduled for a stress test (past heart stent), then once cleared by Cardiologist I will have final surgeon appointment. I'll know then about insurance status and surgery approval. My Initial Consult was early 12/13. Good Luck!

    Frustrated and depressed

I don't have personal experience as my surgery isn't scheduled yet, but I would #1. Appeal the decision by the insurance not to pay for the hospital stay. Get help from your Surgeon's staff in preparing the letter. #2. Call the hospital back--they know how much a stay would average. They may not be able to guess whether you'll have any complications, but they can definitely tell you the average cost for your surgery type, and stay. We have to advocate for ourselves!
  21. I've done almost all preop testing. Still need a stress test and echo of heart due to a stent placed in 2005. Also have enlarged liver/spleen due to high triglycerides (I'm diabetic). Has anyone met with difficulty getting insurance approval from a Medicare Advantage Plan (Today's Options)? I'm 51 and disabled so on Medicare. I have many comorbidities. I just want this surgery done to get my life back on track. I've lost 25# while planning for it.

  23. I am having my first set of pre-op testing tomorrow, 1/6/14. NP of my Surgeon's practice has recommended RNY surgery. My family is less than supportive out of fear. I also fear complications post-op. I have many co-morbidities including Diabetes, Heart Disease, just to name a few. I also have a moderately enlarged liver due to high cholesterol/triglicerides. Has anyone else had this problem (also enlarged spleen) and had RNY surgery? Was it done laparoscopically, open incision? What if any complications were there?

    Pre-op fears

Hi Fleabag1975: May I ask why you are having an open procedure? I'm wondering because I haven't seen my Surgeon yet...still going through all of the early pre-procedure testing and appointments. I am curious as to whether I may need an open procedure (RNY) due to an enlarged liver and spleen. Best of luck with your surgery!
