  1. So my hair has become very brittle and frizzy. It has always been baby fine and straight and when I lost hair from surgery it really wasn't too bad but now after all this time it is absolutely horrible! My DIL is an amazing hairdresser and she is at her wits end, Any ideas?

No, I had the roux-n-y gastric bypass and if I were asked a thousand times about having the surgery, my answer a thousand times would be yes. You MUST understand however that you need to be in the correct frame of mind and you need to follow directions. If you don't do everything exactly the way your surgeon tells you and take all your meds, you will have complications. This is why I have never had complications and it is why I lost the weight so quickly. I had some issues with wrinkles on my face but after about two years, that seemed to smooth out some. After all, I am now 64 years old but I have more energy and stamina than I did in my 40's and I never had hanging skin on my stomach. I do have pretty bad excess skin on my arms though. I just live with it because at my age I can wear short sleeves!

So here is an update, about 10 days ago I went back to actual bariatric vitamins and a Biotin supplement (7500mcg once a day) and my hair is already a lot less frizzy. I don't know which it is but at this point, I don't really care. I am going to just keep on doing what I am doing and see if my nails recover too! Here's hoping the hair comes back completely!!!!!

    100+ To Loose

I want to wish the best of everything to each and every one of you! I won't say luck because there is no luck involved. It is hard work and you are each wonderful. I had gastric bypass surgery on July 31, 2007 and weighed 270 pounds. I was 57 years old, had chronic anemia (so the surgeon almost didn't do the surgery) and a 95% calcified gall bladder. So, it had to go at the same time. In 10 months, I lost 130 pounds, I never had the first complication and have had great labs ever since. I have however gained some weight since quitting smoking in December of 2012 (35 pounds). That is why I am here, to lose that weight gain and get back to goal. I have no doubt that I can do that with the support of the good folks here. Happy New Year everyone!
  5. Hi all! I haven't been a member of a support group for several years but I thought it was about time to jump back in. I had my gastric bypass on July 31, 2007. I weighed 270 pounds on the day of my surgery and I am 5'5" tall. I was 57 years old at the time and I had to beg, beg, beg, just to be allowed to have the surgery. You see, I have chronic Iron deficiency anemia and one of the side effects of bypass surgery is iron deficiency anemia so Dr Jawad did not want to do the surgery at first. He seemed to think that my emotional state was good enough that I would follow the rules and he took a chance. I thank God every day that he did because I became the poster child for gastric bypass surgery and lost 130 pounds in 10 months. I kept the weight off too all these years until December of 2012 when I quit smoking. In three months I gained 30 pounds. I have yet to lose any of that weight but I am happy to say that I at least stopped gaining at 30 pounds. I am basically here to get back on track, act like a gastric bypass patient, eat properly again and lose the weight I have gained. I trust I can do that with determination and support! Thanks for listening, reading, and any words of wisdom you all can impart. Happy New Year one and all!

Hi. Thanks for your replies. One of the reasons I joined the site is because after 7 years I gained 30 pounds because I quit smoking a year ago. I am determined to lose that weight. Six years of being thin was wondeful and I am miserable now. I refuse to contine on like this. The hair and nails are just two more issues to deal with and I am hoping to solve them as well. I hope I can get the support I need here.

I have labs done every six months and my doctor says he wishes his labs were as good as mine (he is half my age). This is just too weird. I am just wondering if it is because I quit taking bariatric suppliments about a year ago and just went to generic ones? Last week I went ahead and ordered the full line of bariatric ones and will take them for a couple of months to see if that makes a difference because I am also noticing that I can't grow my fingernails anymore and I have had beautiful nails my whole life. I am beginning to think that this is at the root of my problem.

Hope you all are ready for a novel!

Thanks for the encouragement, it is just what I need. I know I won't go back to smoking because it has been a year and I just don't want them. What I do need is help with the weight gain so I hope it will be okay to come here for that special kind of help that only people that have been through the same thing can understand.
