  1. What's ur date? My date is march 31. I'm taking off next week and then the following week is spring break. My date is also March 31.
  2. I'm in the second week of my pre-op diet. For my doctor, liquid means 3 Protein shakes and non-calorie liquids. Water, diet Snapple, Crystal Light, etc. No Soups allowed. The first week I had 2 Protein Shakes, 1 lean meat meal with a vegatable, and calorie free liquids. I have to tell you, I am absolutely starving. :/

Pre-op liquid diet and losing weight

I'm thinking they mean 20 lbs from today. I've lost 20 lbs since I started this process. Right now I cannot lose more than 13 more pounds. After that, my insurance won't pay. Right now I'm on the 2 week pre-op diet. I don't really want to lose any more weight until after surgery. If it looks like I'm going to lose a bunch of weight this week, I'll probably do some cheating on my pre-op diet. Maybe have some extra Protein shakes.
  4. I'm on week 2 of my pre-op diet. I went completely bonkers over the weekend. I won't even tell you what all I ate. Today started the liquid only part of the diet and I was so hunghy last night I couldn't sleep. Finally, around 0430, I got up and ate some deli turkey and raw broccoli. I've read through all these posts and there are lots of people who don't even have a pre-op diet. They have their surgery and there are no problems with their liver. Yes, it's what my doctor ordered and yes, I think it's a good idea. But I need this surgery because I can't control my eating. If I could live on 3 protein shakes a day, I wouldn't be needing this surgery. I'm doing the very best I can with this pre-op diet, I truly am. I'm not going to beat myself up for not being perfect. As long as I know I doing the absolute best I can, I can live with it.

    Struggling

I've always been pretty open about everything I do. A lot of people would probably say I am too open, lol. My mother has nagged me about my weight all my life. When I was thin, I was too thin. When I was heavy, I was too heavy. She does not want me to have this surgery but it's simply because she worries that something might go wrong. My 31 yr old son is also opposed to the surgery, and like my mother, it is the fear of something going wrong. I told them if I don't have the surgery, I will die from obesity and diabetes. My brother died at age 56 from complications of his diabetes and I don't want to have the same thing happen to me. I have not told any of my friends. I really don't want to have to defend my decision. And to be honest, I don't want their opinions. I've made my decision and I don't want to feel conflicted about it. I probably won't even tell them after I've had the surgery. I only want positive influences right now. That's probably a wee bit selfish but it is what it is. Good luck to you.

    day after surgery

Congratulations! I hope the rest of your recovery goes just as well.
  8. I just want to say thank you to all the people who have had their surgery and still come to this forum and post. I've read through this entire thread and it seems like most people come before their surgery and then disappear. That doesn't help me at all. What helps me is reading the posts from the people who are taking this journey, through the highs and the lows. You have lots of wisdom to share and a lot of new people who are eager to read your posts. Thanks again.
  9. I know you mentioned that you don't have any health insurance. However, your post-op care should have been covered by your surgeon's initial billing and I think you're still consided to be a post-op patient. Do you have a contact person for your Bariatric program? If so, give them a call and tell them what's going on. It won't hurt to at least give them a call.

    Vitamin deficiency?

I have not yet had surgery and am already B12 and Vit. D deficient. I give myself a B12 injection every month and take a prescription dose of Vit. D twice a week. This study only had 68 participants. I don't think you can make any generalized statements regarding Vitamin supplementation based on 68 people. It might be valid for that one program but not for Gastric Sleeve patients in general.
  11. My surgery was originally scheduled for February 21. I got sick the first part of February. I had a bad case of bronchitis. We had to reschedule my surgery for March 31. It took me a long time to get over the bronchitis and there is no way I could have had the surgery. You do not need to have a surgery just after being ill. I would call your program contact and tell them you're sick, that way they can reschedule you now. I hope you feel better soon.
  12. My surgery is the 31st too! I'm having second thoughts. I've managed to lose 20 lbs over the last 3 months and I'm wondering if maybe I should stick to dieting instead of having the surgery. But I know I've always failed dieting and always gain back the weight plus more. I already have severe neuropathy from diabetes and I have to get it under control, which the surgery will do. I know all these things. I'm just kind of afraid.

How to choose? Sleeve vrs RNY

My surgery is scheduled for March 31st. I am scheduled for a GS but I am still not 100% sure. My doctor told me I can change my mind right up to the minute they're wheeling me into the OR. My main concern with RnY are the potential complications. I am the person who always has the strange health problems, the person who has the weird side-effects, the person who has the rare complication. I do not want a bowel obstruction and that is not an unusual complication. My husband and I will be traveling this summer and I don't want to end up having bowel complications in some little town in the middle of nowhere. A bowel obstruction can require emergency surgery and I simply do not want to be away from home and end up having this complication. I don't know why this is such a difficult decision. I'm very informed and I'm a nurse. Ack! I just need to make the decision and quick second quessing myself.
