A place for bandsters in their 60's
claramae replied to Oregondaisy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Dear Judy, I am so sorry that you are disappointed. I know some people have an easy time with the band. I know when I was having problems with mine, I was scared to death they would have to remove it. I think you should try to find a new doctor in your new location. Perhaps it will be an easy fix to get it working correct and it would make you feel so much better. I am on the computer most of the day and check my messages. So, send me messages and I will be back to you asap. Glad you have joined this group. -
A place for bandsters in their 60's
claramae replied to Oregondaisy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Welcome to the group. I am 58; will be 59 in October. I got my band on August 27th of this year. I have not sailed through like some of the youngsters have. My band slipped even before I got out of recovery. The dr. said it was due to a very large hernia he had to repair. So, two days later, I was back in surgery. He had to put a new band on. So, my day surgery turned into a 5 day stay in the hospital. Anyway, since then, I have done pretty good. Just a rough start!!!. Since August 13, I have lost 23 pounds. I get to go on Mushies on the 16th of August and one week later, I go on solids. So, I would be glad to add you to my list of "band buddies" -
I am still on my liquids. I had my band on August 27th. I have 4 oz. of liquids at a time. I usually wait 3-4 hours before my next 4 oz. I will go on mushies next week. And then solid foods.

This is a big, hairy whine!

Sixteen pounds is wonderful. You should be very proud. What is the matter with these doctors anyway. I am sure they will not turn you away. Especially since they have your money. -
GhostBuster, sorry you had a bad week end. It is kind of strange, but I am 2 weeks out and yesterday and again this morning, I am experiencing neausa. I have not thrown up, or anyting like that, but come on already. It will get better for you. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Can this mean what I think it means?
claramae replied to CallMeJim's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Jim, I might add that with any surgery there is risk. I had total knee replacement in 2003. I developed a blood clot(DVT) and it traveled to my lungs. Thank God, I was still in hospital, or else, I would not be posting this remakr. In 2005 I had hip replacement. I developed an infection in that hip joint. It is called MRSA, very serious stuff. We fought that infection until June of 2006. Had to have that hip replaced. That hip dislocated on me twice. That hip was replaced in November 2006. So far, real good. So, I am telling you that I am Murphy's Law in medicine. -
Can this mean what I think it means?
claramae replied to CallMeJim's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Jim--My name is Clara. I got my band on August 27th. I am the "Murphy's Law of Medicine". If it can go wrong, it will. About an hour after I woke in recovery, they did a barium swallow test to see if the liquids went through my new pouch and emptied into my "real stomach". Nothing happened. So, I had to spend the night in hospital. I forgot to add that the dr. had to repair a major hernia problem. The next day, I went for a barium swallow test at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Nothing again. By this time I was a wreck both physical and emotional. I am thinking WTF have I done???? At this point, I was throwing up!! Next day, I was in surgery so dr. could see what is going wrong down there. Well, the trama from the hernia repair was too much for the new band. It had slipped. Dr. had to put a new band on. Ever since, everything has been fine. A little neausa, but hardly no pain. Would I do it again. Probably. I have lost 22 pounds. -
Help. I am so neausated at tummy that I cannot sleep. I took a precscription for neausea about an hour and still not helping. I am nearly 2 weeks out from surgery and still on liquids. I have not cheated any, so why am I so sick.
-
Hello Jimmie--Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I got my band on August 27th. I ended up staying in the hospital for several days due to complicatins from hernia repair. So, for those days, I was given heavy drugs. But since I have been home, no pain. Tonight for some reason I am having a little of an upset tummy. Do not know why because I am on liquids. But, good luck on your lap band. Keep us posted.

Waters, I am with you. Those Protein Beverages are the nastiest thing I have ever drank. I bought 4 of them. I drank one, how I do not know and the rest went in trash.

Well Dr.C---thanks for the information, maybe TMI!!! However, those pictures convenced me to stick to my dr. instructions. I do not want to end up like that!!!!

Well, let me get my two cents worth in. I have been on liquids since August 13th. I had my band on August 27; am still on liquids. Do I love it-------NO. But I will not knowing jeopardize ANYTHING at this point. Why would I have gone through all the pain and suffering to jump ship now? I also believe there are people(no I am not paranoid) that are expecting me to fail at this. I will not give them one ounce of satisfaction. But that is just me.

EdieT--hello and welcome. I certainly am not the expert; I got my band on August 27th of this year. But, I can tell you that this is a great place to gather information and get support. I have been on liquid diet since August 13th. It is hard to do, but after the 3rd day, it gets easier. I have one more week on liquids, then I graudate to mushies for one week and then on to solid foods. Since August 13, I have lost 21 pounds. For me, that is great. So good luck on your Quest for information. Any questions, just post and someone will help you.

Well, I sent an email to my big mouth sister in law that I would share information on an as need to know basis. Then she told my husband(her brother) that she is afraid of talking to me for fear of hurting my feelins. Well, she has never worried about that before!!!

Candle---That is exactly what hubby said. Since the insurance came through, we do have a little wiggle room. And I really do have a little more wiggle room---21 pounds to be exact!!! We are probably going to get a Toyota Camry. What can I say. Except, wiggle, wiggle!!!! -
my surgeon wants me to have the bypass instead of the lapband
claramae replied to andielmt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just another note. I do not know where you live, but the majority of people live within an hour or two of a major city. I would go see a dr., in some major city. It is your body and your money you are spending. What is a few miles to drive to get to see a good doctor. Now I will hush. Good luck -

claramae replied to andielmt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just my personal opinion, see another doctor. The by pass is very major surgery. This doctor sounds like he may be in it for the $$$$$. My doctor said that at first all he did was by pass. Now he says he will never do another bypass. The band is easier on everyone. Do not let this doctor talk you into anything. See another dr. This is your decision and only yours. Good luck. Let me know what happens. -
Congrats Augusta on your weight loss. My name is Clara. I got my band on August 27th. I started my liquid pre-opt diet on the 13 th of August. I have lost 21 pounds since that date. I am amazed!!! I am 58 years old. I wish this would have been available 10 years ago. But the pounds and the years have creeped up on me and I decided that if I want to see my granddaughters grow up, I better do something. Good to have you here. This is a fantastic place to meet people that are in the same boat as yourself. Keep us posted.

Congrats on going on the mushie diet tomorrow. I am jealous:mad: -

Shelli---Good to hear from you. I am feeling better today. I do not know how much I have lost this week, but I have lost 21 pounds since I started the liquids on Aug 13th. I know one more week on the liquids for me. I can do this. Congrats on your progress. I was feeling so good, that I decided to go to town(12 miles away) and run errands. My wonderful car, that has never broke down, that has nearly 200,000 miles on it, died a natural death. Hubby is there now waiting on the wrecker. I seem to have a dark cloud over me. Thank goodness this did not happen yesterday. I was in such a mood, I probably would have thrown myself into the traffic!!!! Anyway, life goes on. We were takling about a new car anyway, but not until April:car::angry -
DietPepsi---Congrats on your weight loss. I am so proud of you. I have lost 21 pounds since August 13. My goal is to loose 100-120 pounds. I have a long way to go. Thanks for the encouragement and congrats on your success.

Liz, I am on liquids 2 weeks prior to surgery and 3 weeks after surgery. Then after the 3rd week, I go to mushies for 1 week and solids after that. This liquid diet is getting hard on me. I am never hungry, but have been tired, or should I say exhausted. -
lottalbs---my step daughter used Dr. Wade Barker. Or perhaps it is Baker. Anyway, she really did like him. You may have seen the news story on TV in the past few weeks about the overweight man that was refused to adopt a child because he was overweight. The doctor that is doing his surgery in Dallas, free is Dr. Barker. She had her surgery at Doctors Hospital in Dallas. Let me know if this helps.

Shelli---hope you feel better tomorrow. I felt the exhaustion a couple of days ago. I think it is our body adjusting to the change we are going through. Let us know how you feel tomorrow.
