January 2014 Sleevers Come In!

My surgery is in the morning at 7:15am in Roanoke VA with Dr Tananchai Lucktong. I am so nervous I am trembling!! I have never been in the hospital before except when I was born! I trust my surgical team and am sure I will be fine, but can't stop trembling! As for the protein, I use whey isolate and skim lactose free milk. 2 shakes a day is around 80 grams of protein. You can get it at walmart for $22. The chocolate is great. And vanilla isn't bad either. I add sf jello to vanilla to make different flavors. My favs is orange to create dreamsicle flavor. It is easy to get your protein this way and you get no gas. Body builders use this. My nut said not to use the shots. They aren't as good a type of protein. Good luck on Tuesday!! -
My Nut recommends using Fibercon or Metamucil daily after surgery. Also stool softeners as needed.

I'm Monday!! Good luck, I'm sure we will do great! -
Well it's only 5 days to go now. I am doing really well on my liver shrinking diet, and am having no trouble at all managing on what is allowed. I can have 2 shakes a day, plus a Lean Cuisine meal. If I am hungry I can have a yogurt of 100 calories or less, a boiled egg, or a salad with 1tbl of dressing, SF popsicles, SF Jello, or clear no-carbonation SF beverages. The first three days I was ready to eat the packaging, but it became easier and easier after that. The trick to this whole thing seems to be cleaning sugar from your system, including carbs that turn to sugar. I am a sugar addict, and that was tough for me. Since doing it, everything is easier. I just have to stay away from them to keep from sliding back into my old habits! It took 3-4 days of no sugar to get me feeling better. It is worth it though if you are really serious about losing weight. You need to give up Carbonation and Caffeine BEFORE surgery and even before your pre-surg diet! It is hard enough to deal with cutting down on calories without dealing with the other stuff too. I weaned off of caffeine slowly to avoid the headaches. Coffee is my vice of choice, so I began by making half-caff for awhile. Then I would rotate half-caff with decaf and finally all decaf. I can't tell the difference now. Sodas were easier as they weren't my favorite thing anyway. I did drink them occasionally, but don't touch them now. Crystal light is a good substitute for them.

Starting to get very nervous!! 5 days until surgery!!
-
That is normal. But, if you have faith in your doctor and your surgery, then those nerves should turn to excitment.
-
Thanks Travis!! I AM definitely excited. I just have never been in the hospital before. Always the caregivers never the patient! This will be a new experience for sure. Above all I have great faith in God.

Try Body Fortress super advanced whey isolate. Chocolate or vanilla are both good. I mix it with Lactaid skim milk. No gas, and taste great. 30 grams protein per scoop. You can buy it at Walmart for about $22. -

Kaylee.. you might check your Protein. It is possible you have become Lactose Intolerant. I have to use whey Isolate with Lactaid Skim Milk. It keeps the gas down to a minimum. Good luck! -
I am new to the group and see there isn't much activity here. I am in hopes that it will pick up in popularity. It seems there are tons of people who have fibromyalgia, so why aren't they part of this group??!! I am about to be sleeved on Jan 20, 2014, and am getting really nervous. I know that surgery is traumatic to your body, and that can cause flare ups. Just wondering if it affected anyone that way. I guess the pain meds will counter it, but just wondered if there were any symptoms that showed up. I would love to hear your thoughts on this!!

My surgeon is allowing Biotene moisturizing mouth spray & mouthwash to fight dry mouth. I have problems with that anyway so I know I will after surgery. You can buy it in the mouthwash/toothpaste section of a drugstore. I am also taking earplugs and sleepmask so I can actually rest! Hospitals are noisy and bright. They also told me to bring a small pillow or stuffed animal to hold against your tummy when they make you cough. Pj's, robe and slippers as well as personal care items like shampoo, toothbrush etc.. Also ladies don't forget pads in case you TOM comes on unexpected. I understand that happens a lot and they don't allow tampons for a couple of days. Good luck to all! -

Just got back from my last surgical consult. I'm good to go on the 20th. He said no Foley Cath, no drain and no swallow test. He does it all while he's in there. Also will repair hernia and remove gallbladder if ultrasound shows stones. He thinks I will just have one overnight stay. He said I am doing great and expects me to breeze through! I am praying it goes as he said! It's my first hospital stay since birth! -

Biscuits and gravy are great, but are one reason I need a sleeve. -

They've come a long way since then. Roanoke Memorial is a "Bariatric Center of Excellence" now. They have a whole division with a team of 5 or 6 surgeons now. They also have a special section on the 10 th floor for just bariatric patients. There is a whole team of specialists that work together to speed up the process. Nutritionist, Psychologist, PA, NA, etc.... great set up. I have been pleasantly surprised at the whole experience. I get my sleeve on the 20th. As for your church, my family's business was just down the road from there. Thompson's Men's Clothing Store. Small world, huh? -
What about hulle-less popcorn you can buy in a bag at the grocery store? Measure out a serving and put it in ziplock to put in your purse. Then go to the theater. You are controlling your carb count and being careful of your sleeve seam.
