Old Habits At 8.5 Months Out
VSGAnn2014 replied to Andrew0929's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good for you, Andrew! Glad to see you are getting a handle on this. -
There's no rule ... just go out when you feel OK to do so. After three days, you might not want to be driving ... surgical anesthetics are still rattling around in our systems. I was lightheaded for more than a week post-op. I'm 12 days out now, and drove yesterday for the first time.

My first stall, is this thing going to work ?
VSGAnn2014 replied to johnsydney's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You're doing nothing wrong. But I have to ask ... Seriously? Did you really think you would keep losing 2-3 pounds a day forever? After such severe changes (surgery, rapid weight loss), our bodies periodically try to find equilibrium. They respond with what we call "plateaus" or "stalls." You are right on schedule for the "Three Week Stall." There are many threads and even an entire forum here devoted to this phenomenon. Or you can google it. You're doing fine. Just stop weighing yourself every day. Best wishes . -
No, seriously ... is Omar the Marvelous still the coordinator for Dr. Illan?

Linda, I hear you re walking without pain. I am a newbie (today is Day Eleven post-op), but I've lost 25 pounds to date. This morning, I was walking (without pain, shockingly!) and realized when I'm through with this I'll be carrying ... 60 FEWER POUNDS! I can hardly imagine what walking while carrying 60 fewer pounds will feel like. I might be able to fly! To soar over the ground never touching it! This will be the biggest WLS miracle of all. To move my body rapidly without pain or restrictions. For me, it's the ultimate benefit of this whole shebang. Ann

Less than 40 lbs overweight considering sleeve
VSGAnn2014 replied to 4jelly4belly4's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Are you in therapy? If not, you should consider it. And no, I would NOT do WLS to lose 40 pounds. When you're through losing the weight most patients will STILL have to work hard to maintain their weight. FYI, all those miraculous WLS "appetite cures" you've heard about wear down and wear out a year or so down the road. You can eat around a sleeve, a band and a gastric bypass. About half the people who have WLS regain their weight back. What WLS does is to give people who have significant weight to lose a chance to lose that weight while they are building and practicing new , good eating behaviors. That approach is successful for the other half of WLS patients. -
Not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Going ti italy nervous about eating with others
VSGAnn2014 replied to Sha0717's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oooh. Gee. I dunno. That's the land of Eat 'Til You Drop. I dunno if I could do that at four months out. -
Plastics completed...need encouragement please
VSGAnn2014 replied to Sunshine22's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
First thing I'm doing is not my tummy, arms, t*ts, a** or legs. First thing I'm doing is walking into my local medical cosmetic clinic and trying out some of those injectables and other dealios that make your face look like you've just slept for 36 hours and then had your makeup professionally applied. -
Oh, boy ... the South! I grew up there, too. Yeah, there are the traditional foods and cooking conventions. Although you can find clean eating in bigger cities, if you're going to be eating mostly in the homes of older relatives then you're going to have a hard time. But worse than that is the general Southern cultural assumption that your business is everybody else's business. Yes, in some more gentrified Southern cultural milieus people won't ask you awkward questions to your face. But in most Southern society you are fair game when you walk in the door. And as we all know, everywhere you go everyone will talk about you behind your back. Frankly, I hate going "home." I think they're effing crazy down there. My best tip: ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS drive your own car to wherever the gatherings are -- so you can leave if you need to, even if all you do is drive around town or to the nearest cemetery to walk around just to catch your breath. Oh, and carry bottled Water wherever you go in the 24-bottle carton. All they will have to drink when you get there will be sweet tea, Bud Light and white zinfandel. One more ... take Quest bars with you, so you don't get ravenous and hurt yourself. Last one ... take comfort in the knowledge that you will be leaving soon.

Need to make my weight - not what you think
VSGAnn2014 replied to rhayla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know someone who did this for the final pre-insurance qualification weigh-in ... Drank two 16-ounce bottles of Water just prior to weigh-in = 2 pounds Had 8 half-pound weights stuffed in the pockets of her clothes = 4 pounds Had her husband's large cell phone, her own large cell phone, a digital camera, and her key ring stuffed into her bra = almost 1 pound Wore her heaviest shoes (1 pound each) = 2 pounds Wore two blouses, heavy slacks, her heaviest bra, two pairs of panties (had to put some of those weights in there), heavy jewelry (necklace, watch, fitbit, extra rings, earrings, necklace and a big brooch to pin together the wool shawl she wore atop everything else) = 3 pounds Like I said ... that's what I heard. -
So disheartened and defeated.
VSGAnn2014 replied to une nouvelle vie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Because you're the one who brought up math -- and because you're the one who thinks you should be losing at least 1/2 pound a day, consider this math: In the last 6 months (180 days) you've lost 115 pounds. Divide 115 pounds by 180 days. In the last six months you've lost an average of 0.64 pounds per day. Voila! Throw your scales away. You're making yourself crazy. -
Weight Loss Surgery & Depression/Suicide....working on article, can you help a fellow patient?
VSGAnn2014 replied to SamanthaNoyes's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ahem ... are you hypothesizing this is a common problem for WLS patients? If so, this is the first I'm hearing about it. -
Two things: Some of the people you are hanging out with are effing idiots. You know how you can encourage them to keep saying hurtful things to you? Just never tell them to stop saying things like that. Never give them the feedback that these comments are not welcome. Never have the "uncomfortable" conversations that "nice people" never have. But just take their abuse. And keep taking it. Keep smiling even though you'd like to punch them in the face. Because we weren't raised to be assertive. But we can learn to be assertive. All it takes is practice. Best wishes.

What a huge, huge distance you've come in regaining your health and beauty. One of the best before/after pix set I've ever seen here. Thank you.

Sucks to be a Newbie and be considered Offensive
VSGAnn2014 replied to Sandstress51's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sandstress, you didn't offend me at all with your posts. And I'm the OP of that "Why are some WLS patients so clueless" thread. Thank you for your contributions there. I hope you keep posting authentically and transparently just exactly what you feel / think / are curious about. Besides, nobody's post is ever all they think about a topic or the last thing they will ever think about it. In many ways, message boards are like a big city where some people grew up, others moved in from smaller towns, and others moved there from different countries. On these boards you find disparate cultures colliding with each other. The most unsophisticated visitors assume that their own personal values and culture are the superior values and cultures and should be reflected by everyone else on the board. They spend a lot of time bitching about how others aren't following their rules, making them more comfortable or meeting their needs. This is a message board. It's not anything else. And you're not responsible for others' feelings. IMHO. -
flavorless protein powders?
VSGAnn2014 replied to veeleexb's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
LOL! I'm with you. That site design is from 1998. There are three (count them, three!) typos on the home page. Also, what the hell does this hysterical claim actually mean: "Three times more [effective] than any other Protein on the planet!" Oh, yeah. I trust everything about this product. Not. -
@@supercomik ... I assume your weight loss surgery will become a rich reservoir of material for your art. I sure hope so! The struggles of the obese are so painful -- physically, psychologically, existentially. Given that laughing releases pain, (as they say where I grew up) you've got a bird's nest on the ground!

4 days Post Op and I feel like poo :( insight, please!
VSGAnn2014 replied to Loristi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is Day Seven post-op. Doing great. Came home from hospital Day Two. Day Three was my big WTF?! day. Got it all over with then. Day Four felt great. Exercised a little on my elliptical. Day Five did 3 loads of laundry, light housekeeping, Day Six felt good too. Sloughed off ... napped a lot. Day Seven (today) ... more laundry, walked with the dog for 15 minutes outside, and had a long afternoon nap. Water drinking is great, Protein was up to 74 grams today (started at 29 grams on Day Two). Am happy I took 2 weeks off. Getting stronger all the time. Feet don't hurt, knees don't hurt, walking faster, smiling more, kissing hubby all the time. He's kissing me back. Kiss yourselves. -
Why are some weight loss surgery patients so clueless?
VSGAnn2014 replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Rants & Raves
@@hopeful one ... If posts by specific people are offending you or upsetting you, you can ignore them permanently by using the Ignore function. At the top of this page in the blue border just click on your underlined name. Then click on "Settings." Then scroll down until you see "Ignore Preferences" - click on that. Then find and use the "Add a New User to My List." This may make BP a more pleasant experience for you. -
WLS Worries: Sagging Skin
VSGAnn2014 replied to gabrielle2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
At your age, here are your two options: 1. Lose weight (through WLS, starvation dieting, or your fairy godmother appears and grants your fondest wish) and have some loose skin. 2. Don't lose weight and keep everything fluffy. Oh ... and keep your current comorbidities and get ready for some more. Oh ... and expect to gain more weight. At your age, you don't get a third option (lose 80-100 lbs without any loose skin). -
Are you on Twitter ? How does one beat meltdowns that come after #gastricsleeve surgery?
VSGAnn2014 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry, Alex, but I use Twitter for business. WLS is not a subject I address on Twitter.
