I'm a happily married 52 yr. old girl with 4 amazing children and 6 wonderful grandchildren. I have been overweight my entire adult life to one degree or another. In 2002 at the end of a divorce, I had topped my weight at 253lbs. I moved away, and within 6 months was down 70lbs. Eventually they crept back on, every last one. I went up and down about 25lbs and in 2009, when I married the most amazing man ever, I was at the very same 253lbs. Within a couple of years, we had both gained some 'happy' lbs! We joined weight watchers and had some success and then it came to a halt and for 9 faithful months, we experienced no more weight loss. And as you can probably guess, yep, the weight crept back on. Last year, in October, we looked into WLS, and quickly abandoned the idea as our insurance didn't cover the surgery. This last June I needed surgery on both Achilles' tendons ( one is still healing ) and my weight ballooned up to 288lbs. Needless to say, frustration, sadness, discouragement and a sense of failure set in pretty hard. When a friend of ours unexpectedly experienced debilitating health problems, we revisited the WLS conversation again. This time, knowing we would be self pay, it became a must do situation. And so the process began. Every step, every appointment and test, went by flawlessly, except my fasting glucose. It's at this point, I found out I was diabetic. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my 3 boys, but hadn't had a problem since, and making that 27 years. This became one more reason we knew we we on the right road. I'm not sure I would recommend surgery on the cusp of thanksgiving, however, it was the last for sure date available for 2013. It has come at a price in many ways, and I would pay each one all over again. At this point, I'm feeling much better. I lack energy but I know this will improve. I'm 9 days post op and down 25lbs. I look forward to the new year and all the changes that are waiting...
