Found out my insurance pays 80% of the surgery. I found Dr. Nestor de la Cruz-Munoz in Miami, FL and decided to have the surgery with him. From what I've read, he's excellent. I'm pretty excited. I've filled out some paperwork, and hope to be meeting with him and his team sometime this week!

Hello everyone! I'm looking for a surgeon in Mexico City, but I can't seem to find anyone reputable. It's a lot easier for me to fly to Mexico City than the border. Anyone have recommendations?

I just finished talking to my parents about getting the VSG surgery after finally having enough of this lifestyle that I'm living. I've always been the 'weird, fat girl' in school because I liked things that weren't 'cool' at the time, and I wasn't the model-type. I'm 22 now, and secretly struggling with depression because of my weight. I look at other girls and wish I was like them, skinny and beautiful. In a way I feel jealous, and envious because boys give them a second look, and don't even bother looking at me, After talking with them, they want to help me by going on a diet, and talking to a nutritionist and seeing what weight loss programs I can get on. I've tried everything, and still never saw any results. I thought the surgery was the beginning of the long journey I'm heading towards to find true happiness, but the 'rents have shot it down. #endoftheroad #nomorelightattheendofthetunnel

Hi everyone, first time poster here! I'm a 21 year old female, and overweight... I was interested in doing the surgery after I saw the results a friend of mine had. He recommended his surgeon, which happens to be an in-network surgeon of UHC. I called the insurance company, and they said that this surgery wasn't covered... is that possible? UHC has an 'Estimate Health Care Costs' link, and I put in all my information, and according to that, they do... I'll I'd have to pay is $2,000 out-of-pocket. I have insurance through my job, PetSmart. Any suggestions on what I should do?

I'm thinking about heading to Mexico for the surgery. Has anyone had any good experiences? And with who? My dad has a family friend in Mexico, in the capital, who said we could stay with her if we decide to do the surgery there, so that's a huge plus.

Called my current insurance yesterday pertaining to the VSG surgery, they don't cover it. I need to call again just to make sure. It could be because my insurance is through my employer. Which I found weird... my boss has had two open heart surgeries with the same insurance since I've been there, and it was covered... I don't see why this won't be... I've found some decent monthly premiums that I can pay on my own (and not have insurance through my job), but how exactly do I know if the surgery is covered? And what insurance is better? I have the HRA with my insurance and wanted to know if I could use that for the surgery?

I currently have insurance (UHC) through my employer, PetSmart. My insurance doesn't cover the surgery, so I was thinking of switching insurances to one that does cover it. Is that a wise idea?Or should I go the self-pay route?

I have already, twice. And they said they don't. I just don't know if they don't cover it at all, or if there's a way around it with a referral from my doctor.

Was it individual insurance or group insurance? PetSmart didn't add weight loss surgery to their list of things UHC should cover.

They didn't say it was an exclusion, they just said they didn't cover it. Maybe there is a way around it...hm.

I just don't get why they'd freak out over Mexico. We've been going there since I was six months old. They know the risks.

I wish it was that easy. They think that I was to do WLS because I had a friend who did it; and in all honesty, it's about 3% of the reason I want to do it, because I saw the amazing results and I saw how happy he is now. But I want to do this for myself, so I can wake up every morning feeling content with the person I've become. They're were totally spooked too when I said that I wanted to go to Mexico for the VSG.

Going to Mexico! I decided to go with Dr. Ortiz, with the OCC. I've heard amazing things about him. I just need financing and hopefully by next year I can get the surgery underway. Anyone have good advice with lenders?

Called BCBS of FL, and Golden Rule of UHC... they don't cover it... whaaat?

Called my insurance again, no go. My employer doesn't cover anything. My only bet would be to get another insurance... because self-pay is not possible for me. #frustrated
