I Lived Through This Surgery, My Sister Didn't.
rocker-kittie56 replied to LyndseyD's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well I have hip and back pain from a car accident, and no doctors would help me to manage my pain, and that is the same reason I got the surgery, because nothing else was helping. I can barely walk still, but since the surgery I can stand longer without hip and back pain. I can walk farther than before too. I love my husband and I would hate to leave him behind, but he knew there were risks and he knew I did what I did for a chance at a better life. I say it's a choice that everyone has to make and follow all the rules to the diet. If you don't think it's worth the risk, don't get the surgery. You could follow the diet they give you. I lost a ton of weight before just diet and exercise. I tried to tell myself I had the surgery, and tried to lose weight that way. The thing is lifestyle change. My surgeon says that the surgery is only a tool to help with a lifestyle change. So I say to anyone wanting the surgery, but afraid to take the risk...follow the diet anyway. See if it works for you. -

Well I broke my hip and pelvis and have major problems with chairs with arms. I have had a bunch of embarrassing things happen. I was screamed at by numerous people rude comments. Like one group of guys yelled "I love Cake!!" Then I was walking with a cane some chick yelled "lose some weight!" Some teenagers were trying to pick on me in supermarket because I have trouble walking and use the electric carts. My husband had to go to the hospital for back surgery and ended up sitting in the floor because it was too painful to sit in the chairs with arms, and that's all they had. I am looking forward to not having to ask "Is the chairs there without arms?" -

That is so horrible...and you are right everyone needs to know you can die. They should sit down with their surgeon and ask what are ALL the possible complications. Then they should ask themselves if getting the surgery is worth it. You only live once, and if your quality of life is so low you feel like you should be dead anyway...and the surgery gives you a glimmer of hope then you should take it, even if you may die. At least then you died trying to get your life back. -

Wow that is awesome. When I first started I weighed well over 400. Let's just say the doctor scales wouldn't pick me up. I first did a mock liquid diet before I decided to actually have the surgery. I lost about 60 lbs then, but I didn't keep it off and didn't know how to do it the right way. I had a car wreck a few years back and broke my hip in 9 places and my pelvis in 2. I have been struggling with limited mobility. I am hoping that losing this weight will help me with pain levels. I am down to 333 I lost 31 lbs during the liquid diet. I have lost 70+ since my biggest. -
I'm not I would make sure with your dietition on what things you can have. They told me that certain foods even being purée could not be on the list. It all depends on how far post op you are. When I get the money I'm buying a bariatric cookbook. They have several at most book stores. They said we could have garlic powder and onion powder, so maybe cream of potato soup with garlic and onion, or mashed potatoes made with beef broth and garlic powder.

Wow that sounds great! Thanks giving is coming up too soon for me to have a taste this year. I actually got the surgery 3 days before my birthday. So I didn't get cake, but I got a wonderful present. Thanksgiving I will have a little bit of mashed potatoes prepared with beef broth. :-) A week after I can have some deli shaved turkey. Maybe by Christmas dinner I can have a bit. -

That's true, but I think it's all in your head. Honestly my liquid diet ends tomorrow. I have had cravings. I had to fight the cravings. I'm not hungry, because I would prefer not having liquid. I just feel like I want something else. I am excited I get my mashed potatoes even if it's only a couple spoonfuls. I am not worried that I can't eat large amounts. I am happy about that. It helped a lot that my husband did most of the same things I did. He bought things he liked that I didn't and ate mostly that. It really helped with my cravings. -
Hi.I did it. Tomorrow I will get to finally eat some mashed potatoes. The first non liquid in a month. Then Tuesday I get to go get weighed.

That sounds great. I love having support. It's been super hard, but I have noticeable weight loss. I have not been weighed in 3 weeks. I get to see my doc Tuesday, and I'll find out then. Also the first week of the liquid diet I lost 13lbs. Altogether that I know of I have lost quite a bit even before surgery. The surgery went extremely well. :-) The liquid diet keeps you full, but the cravings are the worst part.
