    Giving Up your favorite foods

Once you are there it is not as bad as it seems. With luck you will be like many of us with little to no hunger and very little cravings. I am 4 months out and so far my the foods I have eaten that are not part of my usual diet have been. pizza... sort of, I scraped the cheese and sauce off of half a slice. about 2ozs. Was very satisfying. Bread... went to Red Lobster and along with my broiled shrimp skewer, I had a small bite of their cheese biscuit. Hamburger... Ordered it with no bun, cut off a 3-4 oz piece and the wife ate the rest. Beer... One a week or so the wife and I go to a craft beer pub and have a beer. Just one and it takes me well over an hour to drink it. I only take very small sips due to the carbonation. And I regularly swirl the glass to get rid of the carbonation. It usually brings my calorie intake up to 1200 for that day. So I still have a tiny bit of my favorite foods in very small amounts and I have been progressing very well.

    Low Carb Yogurt?

I am not sure where you are looking but Dannon light and fit greek yogurt is greek yogurt. And as far as the sugar, you cannot get much sugar in 80 calories.
  4. As the reply above said. The big weight loss is exactly what was supposed to happen. One of the most important preparations for sleeve surgery is losing the fat in your liver. The liver has to be lifted out of the way when having sleeve surgery and if the liver is fatty it is easily damaged. Fat in the liver causes it to be hard and brittle. When it is lean, it is soft and pliable. There are alot of stories out there about surgeries being cancelled after the surgeon inserted the camera and saw the liver was not lean enough. Just follow the surgeons directions. Be sure you are getting the recommended Water, Protein and Vitamins and your body should stay plenty healthy. Also you probably wont lose as much the second week due to you have probably already lost most of the excess water weight.

    Low Carb Yogurt?

Generally any Greek yogurt is considered low carb. My fav is the dannon light and fit. Its around 80 calories per container with 9 carbs. But there are many different brands. I would keep to the ones with 100 calories or less. A bit of info I recently discovered is the difference between regular and Greek yogurt. With greek yogurt the whey is strained off. This concentrates the Protein and gets rid of much of the carbs that are in regular yogurt.

So it hits me...... No Beer!

A beer once a week is my one and only cheat. I am 4 months out from surgery and have been having a beer on the weekend when the wife and I go to the local craft beer pub. I usually only drink stouts so the carbonation is not as as bad. I swirl the glass alot at first to kill most of the carbonation. And I drink it so slowly that by the time I finish my one beer my wife and friends who go with me usually finish 2 or 3.
  7. While I am not perfect in what I eat, I always strive to be. At 46 years old I finally came to the conclusion I was not going to be able to get to a healthy weight on my own. So I put myself through a traumatic, life altering surgery to be able to do it. So in turn I was not going to waste the pain I put myself through and go at it half ass. So yes I weight everything, choose the best food options and avoid the foods that put me in the position I was in. In my opinion if you are not prepared to go all the way, you should really rethink the decision to have this kind of surgery. And I know I will probably get alot of flak about this, but from alot of what I read on this forum, there are many people that probably should be getting some counseling for eating disorders before going through with WLS. Because it is a waste of time if you cannot keep the bon bons out of your refrigerator.
  8. The only thing I needed was a ride home from the hospital. My doctor told my wife, not to baby me, make me get up and fix my own foods and stuff. The surgeons insist that you be reasonably active after surgery. It cuts the risk of the most common complications. Like the above response, just make sure you have everything you are going to need for the first few days because you shouldn't be driving.
  9. DO NOT LIFT OVER 20 lbs for at least 4 to 6 weeks. This is standard for any abdominal surgery. Its not as much because of the sleeve but more for opening the incisions possibly causing a hernia. Try a roll around case for your books and definitely use the elevator when you are carrying them. If you have nothing to carry take advantage of the stairs for exercise.
  10. What diet are you on at this stage?? At 4 weeks I was on puree foods. If you are into solid foods, go back to puree. I see many doctors have their patients on solids alot earlier than mine does and they seem to have alot more problems. On top of that make sure when you are eating that you still take very small bites. Putting too much food in to quickly will make you feel sick. Also the one big problem people get early on is with stomach acid. You may not get a heartburn feeling like you use to but that don't mean its not there. Maybe try an over the counter acid reduces. Call your doc and see what he recommends.
  11. The worst I have done so far was 1 bite size piece of chocolate. I felt so guilty I have not done it since. And besides that it really didnt taste as good as it use to. Look to the future. Keep your mistakes in your pocket for future reference, but dont let yourself fall into a pattern. Next time you get that urge for a sweet, go grab an egg or piece of turkey. 12. I guess that would be a good thing. It sounds like (if I'm understanding you correctly), it takes just a couple bites after WLS to get to the same "OMG, I can't handle any more" sensation that would take a non-WLS several bowls to achieve. That's what the surgery is all about. But you do have to constantly remind yourself to eat slowly or you will feel pretty crappy if you overfill yourself before you realize your full. I am one of the lucky ones. I have very little hunger. Boredom hunger is my only enemy. When I am sitting around in the evening I find myself looking for some munchies. But I fill that void with a dense Protein. Beef Jerky or Pickled eggs are my usual choices. And I always weigh out a portion instead of sitting down with the whole container. 1 oz of beef jerky usually satisfies.

    Normal....or not

Some points to remember. Very small bites. My first month I didnt put anything bigger than the size of a peanut in my mouth. Chew chew chew. By the time you are ready to swallow, the food should be extreme mush. Dont drink 30 minutes before or after a meal. I know this is something that's been repeated over and over, but the symptoms your explaining sounds like what happens when you don't follow the above points. (I am not saying you dont) Also back up on your diet plan. Go back to puree/soft diet for awhile. You may not be fully healed yet. And also you may want to talk to your doctor about a stomach acid reducer.

    Almond milk?

I would just watch out for the sweetened versions. Some are quite high in calories.

    Keeping it simple

Since I have been back on solid foods I have been keeping my meals very simple. Mainly because I have not wanted anything else. i see alot of people talking about complicated recipes (which is fine), but I really dont care much bout what I am eating. An average day for me consists of 2 eggs for Breakfast, usually fried(using pam spray) lunch 4ish ozs of turkey, chicken, tuna, and for dinner somewhat the same as lunch with maybe a small portion of veggies. In between I may have a greek yogurt, Protein shake or some beef Jerky. I actually love that it is this simple and I hope I can keep on the same track indefinitely. Anyone else having the same experience??

Specific friend advice needed! Pic included

Maybe she found out about the surgery and that you were keeping it private. If that is the case it would be awkward mentioning the weight loss, in fear that you might find out she knows. On another note. Fast weight loss can sometimes be due to some sort of illness. and again, maybe she dont want to mention it in case that was the circumstance. I personally do not hide the fact I had the surgery. I wear it proudly and tell anyone that will listen about it. All I ever get is "well it is definitely working, you are looking great"

  18. I only met with the surgeon one time prior to the surgery and then once post op. But the rest staff at their office were all knowledgeable and helpful with any questions or concerns I had. IMO as long as the surgeon surrounds themselves with good staff I dont mind not speaking to them directly every time I visit.
  19. I was knocked out, All I remember is seeing the surgeon walk into the room then fade to black. A slightly sore throat was the only side effect.
  20. I set my goal to what the recommended weight is for my height and age.
  21. The main reason the insurance does the 6 month doctor monitored weight loss is to see if you are committed. and to weed out people who are not willing to put in any effort ahead of time. I just got done reading an article that mentioned it.
  22. Kraft is the only fat free mayo I have found. It is 10 calories and 2 carbs per tablespoon. For me mayo is just to moisten tuna, chicken or eggs. After adding some seasoning and other things I dont have a problem with it.

    tortilla.?

I have given up breads/tortillas completely. They were one of my biggest weaknesses prior to my WLS so I said goodbye. I may indulge a little once I hit my goal, but until then there are so many other things to eat that provide the Protein and nutrients I need.
  24. For me, hunger is almost completely gone. When I have gone 4+ hours without eating my stomach will growl a bit and a 4oz or half cup of food and I am stuffed. In the evening when I am home, bored watching TV I do get a little head hunger. But I satisfy it with a dense Protein. lately its been beef Jerky. I weigh out a 1 oz serving and it gets rid of the craving. A recent experience that I had. After eating a piece of chicken for dinner my family pulled out the birthday cake for my nephew. My wife had a piece and I took two small bites or hers and I had no interest in having any more. One thing I find is over eating doesn't give me the same discomfort as before WLS. For me its 10x worse. Almost a gagging feeling.

How are the internal staples removed?

The staples are titanium. Completely hypoallergenic. As someone said, scar tissue will form around them and they will be yours forever.
