Nurses As Bariatric Patients
Tink22-sleeve replied to LynRN's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
1) this study says a lot http://abcnews.go.com/Health/study-finds-55-percent-nurses-overweight-obese/story?id=15472375 Researchers at the University of Maryland's School of Nursing found that 55 percent of the 2,103 female nurses they surveyed were obese, citing job stress and the effect on sleep of long, irregular work hours as the cause. The study, which measured obesity using estimates of body mass index, found that nursing schedules affected not only the health of the nurses but the quality of patient care. "Health care professionals are often involved in providing advice or care to patients that relates to things that aren't totally under control in their own lives. It's not uniform for health care professionals to eat well or avoid tobacco," said Dr. David Katz, the director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. Keith-Thomas Ayoob, associate professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said nurses are just as susceptible to health problems as the rest of society. "Before we were health professionals, we were real people. Just because we became health professionals doesn't mean we stopped being members of regular society with all the problems that go along with it. It illustrates that knowledge alone isn't always enough to produce behavioral changes," said Ayoob. The same is true with smoking, Ayoob said. "We all know smoking is bad. It doesn't matter if you're a doctor or a nurse or a plumber. You might postulate that your interest in health would be higher if you were a health professional, but a lot of doctors and nurses smoke," said Ayoob. "Nurses need to understand the importance of taking care of themselves before patients or their families," Ayoob said. To combat the high obesity rate among nurses, Kihye Han, the author of the study, proposed more education on good sleep habits, and better strategies for adapting work schedules. She also called for napping at work to curb sleep deprivation, reduce fatigue and increase energy. The 2004 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses found that more than 40 percent of nurses who left nursing said they did so because of irregular and long hours, indicating that better scheduling could help nurse retention. Han also proposed increasing making healthy food more available, and allowing enough time to consume it. For instance, Han recommends on-site farmer's markets to serve health care workers who work nonstandard hours, healthier vending machine choices or having food delivered to the work unit. "There's an awful lot conspiring against weight control in nurses. The solutions are ... giving the nurses the knowledge and skills they need to manage their weight, and environmental reforms, like having opportunities for physical activity breaks in hospitals, and having nutritious food options readily available 24 hours a day," Katz said. "Nurses, who dedicate themselves to helping others," said Katz, "deserve that support from us." 2) I think that, by nature and training, we nurses are more apt to do extensive research before having any procedure done. Maybe doing all this extra research is what leads us to this site and helps us to find each other. -

litebrite, Thank you so much! I needed to hear that! my weight loss is kinda slow so I appreciate the encouragement. But i am really enjoying the results so far. I am feeling super great! It has gotten easy over time. Its a learning process. It took a good 6 months before i felt "in touch" with my sleeve and my feelings about food. Examples of how much i can eat at a typical meal: 3 ounces sashimi tuna with about a cup full of steamed edameme pods 4 ounces of tilapia with about 7 spears of roasted asparagus. I average 850 calories a day (I faithfully log on myfitnesspal). im happy to answer any other questions you may have. todays meeting at Lovelace was nice and interesting. we talked about eating out for meals. i am looking forward to meeting you there soon.

Mom2BnB, i asked at the meeting today if people other than Lovelace patients could go to the meetings. Right now only Lovelace patients can attend (the group is pretty big). they are hoping to have smaller groups in the near future and then you can come too!

I had my surgery 10 months ago at Lovelace on the west side with dr Sanchez. Then, a short time later Lovelace split with ABQ Partners so now I see dr. Vuong. I haven't had any problems at all, except for some slow weight loss My stats- down 68 pounds. 28 pounds to goal. BMI finally below 30. I have lost 33 inches. Down from a size 22 to a 14. I am very pleased and feeling great! Yes please do let me know when you start going to classes. I'd love to meet up! How are you doing on your journey?

Pretty sure I f***ed up the sleeve. No leak, but I might as well have never gotten it.

Throwaway (i do NOT like calling you that), my personal opinion is that there is nothing you can do to stop the hairloss. i dont think vitamins will help that, either. *take care and be kind to hair (and to yourself, of course). try to use good products on your hair. avoid chemicals and blow dryers. biotin may help to make it grow back fuller. *i dont know if any doc actually does this, but i know they can tell the size of the stomach by doing an upper GI. talk to your surgeon. *Be honest with your therapist and your doc. this is your reality and you need to be honest with yourself and the people that can help you thru this. * the sleeve is not going away. that is permanent. its your choice, one day at a time, to face this positively and get on with your new, thinner, more healthy life. * how old are you? they really cant tell your mom anything if you are 18 or over. Besides, your mom may be able to help you more than you give her credit for. * "to thine ownself be true" another fave motto. Hang tough!!!! -

do not dismay. you may be having some buyer's remorse. you said your 6 weeks out right? here are some tips: *track your drinking on something like myfitnesspal. it helps to see how many calories all those drinks add up to. *go and talk to your surgeon. i went to my surgeons office when my weight loss was at a stall and it really helped to go see them they will help you figure out if your stomach has actually stretched. my understanding is that it can only stretch so much, and never back to its original size. my surgeon does not believe that liquids stretch out the stomach. * youve had amazing weight loss! be grateful. * i agree that counseling may be of great help to you. it helps me with food issues and body image issues. * as far as the hair loss is concerned-- this is temporary. I know have frustrating this can be. it will stop. i lost about a 1/3 of my volume and no one noticed but me. * and never forget "Bullshit thyself not" (my motto) best of luck to you. glad you are reaching out for help. -
