7 weeks post op - success and struggles
Terribj replied to Jaime_Boston's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I bought Orowheat Sandwich Thins- they are 100 cal for the entire bun (I can only eat 1/4 of the bun). It sits very easy in my stomach. I add some eggs, 1/2 slice of Canadian bacon, and 1/2 slice cheese - mini egg McMuffin and all healthy. That is usually Breakfast..... The other thing I did that week that worked well was I cooked 4 chicken breasts. All marinated different. Once they were done I cut what I would eat this week and then froze the rest in 2 oz servings. Now I just set one out the night before and throw it in my bag. I also throw in string cheese or some hummus, refried Beans. Because I have no appetite I usually bring half of what I take home, and that serves as lunch the next day This is also a good website for ideas for food http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/ -
I'm doing well on vitamins - I'm feeling much better this week. I've figured out that if I don't get protein and water on say Monday, Tuesday I feel like crap. I've really been watching water and protein - I also added B12 and things are much better.

I'm 5 weeks post op and I've lost 29 pounds but I feel more out of shape than I did pre-op. I walk at least 2 miles a day and am cleared for exercise next week. I'm not sure where I'm going to find the energy. I get winded walking up a long flight of steps (ball park for ex) I didn't before surgery. I eat between 450-600 cal. 70% protein, 20% fat, 10% carbs. Thoughts?

Make a list of things that you feel need to change for you to be successful. What is it that is stopping you from exercising? What is it that keep you from drinking Water and getting in your Protein - BE HONEST. Will your husband be supportive? What things are in your control to change? Then, sit down with your family and explain you need to do things for you . Go over the list - can they help? You will still be available to them, but to be there for them long term things may have to change. Make small changes first. Set priorities #1 Protein and Water --what needs to change here? Then focus on #2 Exercise. You won't be able to exercise if you don't get in your protein and water first. This surgery was for YOU and only YOU can take control of making it work. You can do it!! YOU ARE WORTH IT.

I've Stalled @ week 6 post - surger
Terribj replied to JENLYN's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Throw the scale out the window and follow the plan. Your body is catching up with all the changes that have taken place over the last 6 week.... Think about it....little to no: sugar, salt, caffeine, soda, fried foods, carbs, all those things we used to love and crave our bodies are no longer getting. As our minds needs to address the emotions of missing those foods our bodies need to adjust as well. And that is just the food part - think about removing 80% of your stomach...all the hormones, nerves, etc contained in the stomach. This is a big shock to the system. If you are weighing your self more than once a week - stop. Mr surgeon recommends once a month. It is another hard habit to break - but one to maintain sanity. Keep on with the plan and your body will catch up. -
Post op 1 week and hate lying around
Terribj replied to Bigmommatojacob's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 weeks post-op and I still struggle with energy. My body knows if I didn't get all my Protein and Water in the day before. I get dizzy and very weak. I've started taking B12 and being more religious about Vitamins. -
It seems like a short time, but it will go by faster than you think. I think you are spot on in preparing for your new like in these next 6 months. That is exactly what I did and am having nice success post-surgery. Here are some things to think about - this is according to my doctor and as you will read on this forum it seems every doctor is different. No soda for the rest of my life - so if you have a soda habit, try to kick it now No alcohol for 6 months after surgery. I stopped my weekend beers 4 months prior to surgery and I thought this would be the hardest - but I don't miss it (unless I'm at the ball park and then I'm missing a beer and a dog ) The hardest was to no drinking during meals - that was the biggie and even 6 weeks post-op it still can be a challenge. This isn't easy by any means and I have to say some of the emotional issues that need to get dealt with are much harder than figuring out what to eat. As my surgeon said AFTER surgery - "OK, the easy part is over--this is where the work starts." I wish you the best of luck - this was truly one of the best decisions I've made for myself - and remember this is for YOU. Keep the eye on that prize and you will be successful.

I had a relatively low BMI (37.3) and no co-morbidity. I was self-pay for my surgery. I feel that I am having good success. The pounds and inches are coming off - at my body's pace. In the past I couldn't lose weight. I've read about people who can't keep it off - i couldn't lose it. 4 months of a supervised diet before surgery, with a NUT, personal trainer and my doc - I gained a pound in those 4 months. I personally think my lower BMI has helped with my success. I don't mean that as a blanket statement - that is a "this works for me" comment.

Here come the questions/looks/reactions of others to my WLS
Terribj replied to Teachamy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am experiencing this same thing. Men are complimentary and kind, most (not all) women don't say a thing. I find it so odd, I'm looking forward to the rest of my weight loss and the reactions of others. It sometimes is comical. Congrats on yours -
The sleeve surgery has only been performed since 1997 and that is just an estimate. Since this surgery doesn't require FDA approval the data on the start date is just an estimate. The instruments used to do the surgery require FDA approval, the surgery itself does not. It was actually started as a pre-bypass surgery for people with VERY high BMI's. I did do some research on long term effects as well - but since it's only been performed for such a short amount of time there isn't much data.

absolutely possible :0 take it slow.

I too am 6 weeks post-op and here is my daily intake 7AM Scrambled egg (about 3 bites and I'm done) / 1/4 of a piece of Canadian bacon (or turkey sausage) 9:30 AM Cottage cheese (1 oz) and 5-6 grapes ( or some other fruit) 11:30 / 12 1.5 oz baked chicken and 1 oz of re-fried Beans 2PM 3 saltines with hummus or pnut butter 1 piece of string cheese 5/6 PM 2 oz of baked fish or chicken, 1 oz green beans (or carrots or some veggie I can handle) Throughout the morning between meals I sip on a Protein drink and then drink Water the rest of the time. This equates to about 600 calories a day and there are some days I can't get that much in. To get on track----I try to add a new food every week. I pack my lunch each night before bed and first thing in the morning I add everything I'm going to eat into My Fitness Pal. My husband and I eat together and if he wants something not so healthy I make something different. To be honest I really don't like eating since surgery. While the food tastes good I'm just not hungry - I have no cravings, but my body can feel when it needs fuel - that is all it is. There are still a lot of foods I can't tolerate so I stick with what I know will go down. Good Luck

Shiritaki Noodles?
Terribj replied to purplegerber's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks out and cannot tolerate noodles of any kind, I tried one noodle this weekend and wow--not so good. I've read on this forum a lot of people can't tolerate pasta either. I'm think I'm happy I can't have them -
Hungry at 3 days post-op?
Terribj replied to dsmith_rn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt that way after surgery as well. About a week out the hunger seemed to subside and at 6 weeks out I have no cravings and I sometimes have to remind myself to eat. -
My dr told me that right after surgery a straw would hold more volume than my stomach can handle. I'm now 6 weeks post-op and I tried using a straw over the weekend and boy did it hurt. I don't know if it was the additional air you ingest when using a straw or the bigger "gulp" and not sipping. I won't try that again for a LONG time.....

What about meds, milk, coffee, soda, beer and other drinks?
Terribj replied to SugarBomb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Remember every doctor is different I would talk to your doctor The first 2 weeks I could take children's liquid Tylenol - after that Tylenol (or the like) only. No ibuprofen beacuse of it's irritability on the stomach According to my doctor no carbonation ever again - I've read people on here do, not very often, but they do. Right now, I'm not willing to take the chance - I was horribly addicted to diet soda and don't want to fall back into that trap. Decaf coffee for the first couple months - I've seen some people have regular coffee as well, it is too tough on my stomach. No cream and sugar - too much sugar. Remember that sugar that moves too quickly though your stomach will end up in your intestine that doesn't do a good job of breaking it down. I put Splenda in my tea - and I have had a cup of decaf and I add a little vanilla Protein shake to it for "cream" I drink 1% or skim, Yes--just plain - it's a good source of protein. No alcohol for 6 months per my dr. after that I don't know--It will depend on how my stomach handles it. I bought a ninja blender and use it frequently for various things. -- You might search on juicing on this forum. I would make sure to add unflavored protein to your juices. Good Luck -
New to Bp, appointment with surgeon,
Terribj replied to jenniferx25's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It seems every doctor is different - Here is what I've seen different on this forum and these are the questions I would confirm What is the pre-op diet requirement - some require 2 weeks, my doctor required none Some have different post -op diets, I was full liquid 2 3 weeks, soft foods 2 weeks, regular food after. I've seen some doctors require 4 weeks on each stage What are the Vitamin requirements after surgery Exercise - when can you start (mine was 6 weeks, I've seen others at 3/4 weeks start) What is the expected stay in the hospital (i was released the next day--some stay 3-4 days) What are his/her recommendations in returning to work. You might also ask about follow up visits to the doctor. I saw mine after 2 weeks, next is 3 months, 6 months and yearly post op, Hopefully he/she will help you navigate through insurance requirements if you are pursuing insurance coverage. Some require a 6 month plan prior to surgery, some 3, some none. Research they changes you will need to make after surgery and know that this is a change for life, Things like no soda, no alochol for 6 months (that was my dr's recommendation) and not drinking with your meals. Some of these changes can me the hardest. read about what "head hunger" is I would also check out YouTube and watch the surgery (if you aren't queasy). It was very informative. Good Luck and Best Wishes!!! -
OMG I thought I was going crazy!!yes, my vision was horrible (close up only). I'm in week 6 and it seems to be getting better.

Almost 3 Weeks Post Op: Calories?
Terribj replied to vsg_joanna's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I talked to my doctor about caloric intake at 3 weeks out as well. he told me for the first 3 months concentrate on the amount of Protein and not so much on calories. Get in your 65 grams of protein and 64 oz of Water. Don't focus on calories. He also said if you need a guideline - 70% protein, 20% fat, 10% carbs, I use MY Fitness Pal, log everything but don't track calories - I just make sure I'm getting enough protein. Today at 5 weeks I still only eat 500-600 calories a day - with no hunger. -
When I was 11 my friends got taller and I got fatter. So for 40 years I've always been the husky, chunky, sturdy, girl. I'm not sure I have ever felt comfortable in my body - I took a lot of emotional abuse as a child, mostly from my family because of my size. My husband is very fit and healthy and has loved me for me - but I decided I was missing out on a lot. I want to be fit enough to run (i don't know if I really WANT to run but I'd like to be fit enough to do so). I want to buy clothes from a regular store. I want to look in the mirror and be able to smile at me. I want my knees not to hurt going up and Down stairs, My most of all i want to FEEL GOOD. Every person is different and everyone has their own story - great question

3 Month Post-op Visit Today
Terribj replied to JillC878's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand the feelings you have--The weight loss journey we cannot do alone (hence why we are all here) I also feel the self-loathing and deprecation is something we shouldn't do alone either. I would strongly suggest hiring a therapist or finding a professional that can help. I have seen a psychologist and she has helped immensely with many of the thoughts of self hatred and why I feel the way I do. Good Luck -
I am not a smoker, but from what I've read that is a no-no - forever... as far as drinking - my doctor says nothing for 6 months, The alcohol will go straight to your head--one drink and a lot of people feel as though they have had 5.

I am 51 and weighed 224 at surgery. I had no pain other than where the anesthesia settled (in my left shoulder) and a heating pad solved that. I did have a lot of nausea the first couple days. They gave me nice medication for that. I stayed in the hospital one night and slept for the next 2 days at home. I started to feel back to myself day 10 or so. Would I do this again? Oh YES - I have lost 29 pounds in 5 weeks. I'll take that I also have no hunger -- which I love. I've set non-food goals for each milestone and each week I purge my closet. I am so busy going and doing fun stuff I never even think about food. It is so worth it

I'm a month post-op and some days I still struggle with liquids. Keep up the good work!!

My surgery was 3/19 and I also have no hunger. Pre-sleeve I was hungry ALL THE TIME, never full. I would never have believed it had I not experienced it. I do have to remind myself to eat sometimes, especially the Snacks. I can tell when I haven't eaten enough - I start to feel a little weak. I have read that after some people start to add carbs to their diet the hunger starts to come back. With the recommendation of my dr of only 10% carbs in my diet--i a m hopeful I won't feel hungry. I don't think about food like I used to - bag of potato chips here, handful of candy there. Walking in the kitchen and opening the pantry "oh look, a cookie". Now i an far more focused on things I used to hate, which some I now love. Planting flowers, cleaning the garage, organizing the house and the best one---EVERY WEEK purging my closet. I seem to keep so busy and now can't sit still I don't even have the desire to think about food. It is wonderful
