    60+ sleevers please help

Thank you. We're all in this together and helping each other is what is so great about this group. Some of the younger ones are having a hard time dealing with bat wings and sagging boobs etc. I had to chuckle since that's just a "perk" of being our age. They can save their $ to get that taken care of but at my age I figure it goes with the grey hairs and wrinkles I've earned through life. I'm just happy to have good health and having the scale move a pound lower every couple weeks. I hope everyone is having a great day.

    60+ sleevers please help

Got Prilosec yesterday and it's helped already. I hope I'll be able to stop taking it in time. I think it might be a side effect of the sleeve. Time will tell. Yes, naps are good and that's what's great about being retired.....taking a nap when I feel like it. 3.5 mo's after surgery all is good now that I have the acid indigestion under control. Still amazed at the difference in amount of food I ate before the sleeve and the small amount I eat now. WOW

    60+ sleevers please help

I'm going out now to buy some Prilosec and see if it works better than the zantac. I'm glad you got the hernia repaired and hopefully we'll both be off the Prilosec in time. If not I guess it's a trade I can live with for having the sleeve. I drink a lot of fluid to make sure I'm not dehydrated. Iron and high protein tend to bind me up but the stool softeners work well. Thanks for your help

    60+ sleevers please help

Anyone get acid indigestion after surgery? Sleeved 2-17 and doing great. Was on protonix for 90 days w/no refill. Dr said if I had acid indigestion to use Prilosec. I've been using Zantac 2x a day and thinking of getting Prilosec. Never had this before surgery. My Dr said there was a good chance I would. Anyone use Prilosec or if not what do you take that works? Small price to pay for my better health. BP is 115/60, arthritis pain much less and I'm wearing a size I haven't in years. I was 66 when sleeved and turned 67 in March. I had 2 hip resurfacings and didn't want to outlive my hips so this surgery was the best thing I did. I'm bowling, exercising in the pool and doing things I had a hard time doing before surgery like tying my shoes. The only real problem is the acid indigestion and constipation (kept under control w/250mg stool softeners). Anyone taking Iron? I have Medicare and in one of the states that requires permission. I haven't heard anything so no news is good news. Limited income so I qualify for financial aide at hospital. Ridicules that all states but a few where you have to get permission for the sleeve. I still have fatigue at times.......anyone else have this? Weight loss is slow but that's ok. I just hope my hair doesn't fall out like so many have had. I have extremely thin hair as it is so I'm hoping w/the slow weight loss I won't loose it. I take Biotin 7,000 and my other Vitamins. Glad everyone is doing well.

    Anyone not tell family?

If you noticed Par1959 is "pre" op so until he walks in our shoes his opinion doesn't count. We've all done great w/weight loss and there is no correlation between telling people and pounds lost. We all rock.

    February/March 2014 sleevers

Thanks Darianna. I will have to wait and see if or how much of a problem I have after I stop the Protonics. The Dr said I can take Prilosec after I stop the Protonics. I do know that uncontrolled acid /GERD can cause esophageal cancer so keeping it in check will be my goal. Hows everyone else doing?

    February/March 2014 sleevers

I'm joining the slow loosing club. My Dr said it can take 18 mo's to reach a normal weight. I guess slow wins the race. I'm back to exercising and have noticed my body has lost inches. I feel good and no problems eating or drinking. I have to take stool softners or I get constipated. Took me 2 wks to get the scale to move a pound. Is anyone on anti-acids? I'm on Protonics for another 2 wks (90 days total) and then the Dr said if I needed to take an OTC anti-acid. I'm wondering if I'll need them. I never had a problem before surgery w/acid.

Good Luck IKM w/your surgery. You'll do fine. Let us know how you do.

    65 and over

Guess we're all enjoying retirement, work and weight loss. I'm doing fine at 2.5 mo's. Loss is slow but that's ok. Feel good. How is everyone else doing ?

THIS is how the first 4 weeks go...

You new sleevers will feel normal again I promise. I'm 8 wks out and feel really good. The body has to heal and adjust to the new way of eating. Take it one day at a time and follow your Dr's orders. My weight loss is slow but that is ok. Slow wins the race. I've had stalls and figure in a weeks time the scale will move and it does. I'm now allowed to go to Curves and bowl. I've been in the pool since week 4. I can eat everything but sugar and bad carbs.. Take your Vitamins which is very important. You too will feel good one day soon. Take it one day at a time and work through that. You can and will do it. Oh yes by the way I turned 67 last month so you youngsters can and will be back to a new normal soon.
  11. Someone wrote that their Dr said that the fatigue can last up to 3 mo's. I had to stop taking the Iron since it was really constipating me. All the other Vitamins I have no problem with. I guess the fatigue will lessen as time goes on......I hope Anyone else have the fatigue? I hope we're not the only 2 Water Nazi.
  12. 2 mo's the 17th. 21 lbs lost. I get tired/fatigued at times but it's all part of the healing. Slow but sure wins the race.

Got the shot in my heel last Thurs and my heel is fine now. YEA. Weight loss still slow. 19 lbs now. See Dr for 2 mo visit and hope to get released to go to Curves. As long as the weight loss is slow but sure I'm happy. Omg, my sister had that and it was agonizing to walk so I'm familiar with that pain. They made special insoles for her that ended up being just as painful and no help. As she lost it did get better though, so keep it in mind. (((Hugs)))

    60+ sleevers please help

I can't imagine the pain from gout and then the have the meds counteract. You've really had a rough time of it. I hope you can get through this and the shingles so summer finds you healthy. Your weight loss is awesome. Do you live in the Panhandle? I lived in Marathon, Clwtr, Ft Lauderdale and Ocala. My husband died and I was forced to retire from my job so leaving FL was not a problem for me. I love AZ and when it's hot in the summer I hop in the car and drive 90 min to the mountains. I'm from Chicago and there are so many people from the Midwest I feel like I'm at home. The main problem I have is constipation where I have to take stool softners 2x a day. That schedule seems to work the best for me. Also getting the head hunger and eyes bigger than stomach thing under control oh and eating a little too fast that causes sliming (sp?). Hope you can get out in the sunshine and enjoy the weather.

    60+ sleevers please help

I agree Linda and I think we're an over medicated society. Dr's give people Rx's to counteract the side effects of previous meds and it's a never ending cycle. I only take synthroid and protonix which will be d/c'ed the end of May. My BP is normal since surgery and I don't have the joint and muscle pain like I did. Also loosing the weight takes the strain off my heart and other organs. I hope my energy goes up. I've read that fatigue can last 3 mo's after surgery. I have to remind myself I'm not 40 and can't expect to be full of energy all the time. I no longer take Aleve and only need Tylenol once in a while now.

    60+ sleevers please help

I'm sure the weight loss will help w/the knees. I had both hips resurfaced. I have very strong bones so I chose the resurfacing instead of hip replacement. Like most of us I couldn't loose the weight and I was afraid I'd out live my hips. Having osteoarthritis in other joints and tired of the pain I researched and choose the sleeve for weight loss. I have no regrets. Weight loss is slow and I think it's easier on my body taking it off a little at a time. That's just my thinking. I hope everyone is having a good experience and we're never too old to have a better life.

7 wks tomorrow out of surgery. Doing well. Waiting for the ok to go back to Curves. Weather here in AZ is beautiful. Too bad it will be getting hot in the next few months. Had planters fasciitis for weeks. Finally got a shot of cortisone and no pain. Yea. Walk in the indoor pool which is great exercise for me. Hope everyone is doing great.

    February/March 2014 sleevers

All is well except the heel. Slow going for my weight but noticing the difference in clothes. I do have the "eyes are bigger than the stomach" syndrome. I guess so many years of eating a lot my head still thinks I should be eating that much when I know different. All in all it is going well. I learned what sliming was and why I don't put too much in my stomach. It's sure a learning experience but I have no regrets and feel better since I lost some weight. How are you doing now Glitter? What has been a problem?

    February/March 2014 sleevers

I'm another 2-17 sleever. All going well. Weight loss slow. Had planters faciatis and just got a shot in the heel which I hope helps. Good to hear from you Glitter. I'm a fellow surgery sister! Sleeved 2/17 as well. Was 294 before preop diet and weighed in today at 243!

THIS is how the first 4 weeks go...

Hey April, I have the fatigue also. I'm glad someone posted that her Dr said it can last for 3 mo's or so. There is very little about how long the fatigue can last. I never had fatigue after surgery last this long. This is a MAJOR trauma out bodies have been through and it will take time for it to heal. Also loosing weight puts more stress on our bodies. Taking it one day at a time, taking our Vitamins and following the Dr's orders will work in the long run. Your right everyone is different and we all heal differently. I got Planters fasciitis 2nd day after surgery. I noticed when I started to walk a pain in my heel. I'm grateful I have an indoor pool to walk in because regular walking can be painful after a short time.

    Anyone not tell family?

I did not tell my sons or their wives. I only told a few close friends 2 of which had the RNY, I had the sleeve. If someone says I lost weight I just say thank you. If they ask how I just say I cut my eating portions way down and doing low carbs. I leave it at that. I'm 5ft 3 and weighed 199. Just made the 35 BMI for surgery. In the hosp one CNA told me I didn't look big enough for the surgery. We all carry our weight differently and I knew the extra weight was affecting my health. Since surgery my BP is normal, my cholesterol has gone down and I feel lighter after 17 lbs. I researched a lot and picked a Dr who was at the top in her field. I've had no problems since surgery. I feel good. I get fatigued but as one Dr said it will get better after 3 mo's. Make sure the Dr you choose is one of the best your health and life depend on it. I gave this to myself for my birthday. I turned 67 last week. Yep, I'm an older boomer but going to be one with a healthy weight and body. Good luck.

    I need a hand up

Sorry about the way your doctors acted. I agree write a letter to who ever is head of the physicians. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. We can't be complacent patients. It's not like it was years ago when Dr's had time and cared about pts. I am very lucky I have an excellent physician who is at the top of her field. I researched to make sure I got a good one. I realize now everyone is lucky enough to have this. As an RN you know how Dr's can be and you have to be assertive!!!!! It is your life and health. As for your husband he's not being compassionate. Shame on him. Good luck and let us know how your doing.
  23. Yes, I had passion fruit herbal tea there.
  24. It's 1 mo today for me and I"m in a small stall. I have eaten a little bread/mashed pots and a donut. They are slider foods for me so I know not to eat them. Our bodies can't keep loosing weight at a fast pace. Relax and keep doing what the Dr said to do. In a yr you'll be down to a healthy weight and this stall will be a memory. Take one day at a time and enjoy. The scale will move or don't weigh yourself but 1x a wk. Good luck on your journey.
