Wow! Congrats to you! I had surgery Oct. 24th, 2013 and I am 5'1" and was 248 now 222. I am using you as my guideline as to how much I can lose! I am 62 years old and I never can imagine weighing 130, which is my goal as well! Haven't seen that since senior year in high school. -

One answer.....MEAT, meat, MEAT! Lots of it, carbs are the evil ones. Don't do yogurt, have a chicken breast, turkey sandwich without the bread, use lettuce, broiled fish, steak, pork chop, shrimp sauteed in olive oil with garlic. Quit feeling hungry! Eat meat! That is what I did and I got a gold star on my picture of my liver from my doctor! I ate 1,000 to 1,200 per day pre operation. After operation I am right on track! 24 pounds lost in a month! -
Yes you can have wine but in moderation. My surgeon said after two months. But keep in mind, alcohol will affect you differently. So when you drink wine for the first time, make sure you have a driver or drink at home to see how it affects you. A little can make you tipsy.

Laura-ven you are spot on!!! My surgeon would not have done surgery on anyone who did the two week diet and gained weight. I had a total South Beach diet for 2 weeks prior. All the meat I wanted with less than 40 carbs a day. I love meat and I lost weight eating steaks and pork chops, chicken and fish. In fact he took pictures of my surgery and put a gold star on my liver!! Surgery is a weight loss tool. Not a 100% guarantee! You can have 3/4ths of your stomach gone and gain weight by what foods you put in your mouth. Be smart....quit thinking of what you "can't have" and think of what you get to have!!! -

I had to go through the same hoops and I was self pay. It does add to the cost but no diet except a modified South Beach diet to shrink my liver for two weeks in advance Well worth it. I also feel self pay people will appreciate and stick to their new eating habits better. I paid too much to fail!

You can't run your life by being scared. You could get run over tomorrow just crossing the street and it does not help to worry about it. The sleeve is more nutritionally sound than the bypass and less invasive. My sleeve was done as an outpatient in one day. With the bypass, your diet is restricted, with the sleeve you can eat anything you want with my your new stomach being in control. Your portion control is already built in with either surgery but you have nothing to lose but the weight! You get to have a "do over"!! A second chance at a normal life. Good Luck! -
My sleeve was October 24th. I had a breeze of a time! No pain, no nausea, lots of energy after surgery. It is all in Attitude!!!!! After puree, I went onto regular eating bypassing the mushy stage. Take a book, Kindle, cell phone or computer with you to hospital and your own gown. Good luck!!!!

Drinking Way More Than 4 Ounces An Hour

No Jayson, you do not have to feel discomfort. I felt no discomfort from the get go. I went from puree to regular diet with no repercussions. I felt a little discomfort the first week with anything cold, but other than that I went for broke. If it didn't hurt and I chewed it very well, I ate it. 4 ounces an hour is half a cup. An entire Water is 16 ounces or 2 cups. Put that in perspective. I felt no nausea or pain at all. There are a few of us out there. Pay attention to your cues though. You should be eating no more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup at this stage. I am a month out and I eat from 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup, but often quit before I reach that 3/4 cup because I am aware that I should be full. Sure enough, I push it away and am fine until my next meal. -

Protein Drinks aren't complete protein. You should be eating meat, eggs and other forms of Protein as well. You are weak due to incomplete diet. And popcorn has no redeemable nutrition to it. If you only get 1/2 to 3/4 cup make it count with protein first, veggies fruits next and then carbs. Yogurt, Hummus, cheese......You need a balanced diet! -

You should be getting 60 to 80 grams of Protein a day. You should be eating about 3/4 a cup and not a cup. You should have a 100 to 200 calorie Breakfast, 100 calorie midmorning snack, 100 to 200 calorie lunch, 100 calorie afternoon snack, and a 100 to 200 calorie dinner. That totals about 800 calories a day. Eating carbs makes you retain Water. My doctor told me this. Protein first, veggies/fruits second, carbs third in your 3/4 cup. Wanting carbs with splenda is Head Hunger. Learn to tell the difference between head hunger and real hunger. Remember, to gain a pound, you have to eat 3,500 calories a day, extra besides what you burn with daily activities. I suspect you are holding water. Carbs do not keep you from being hungry. They feed hunger by raising your blood sugar then dumping you later, which makes you hungry. Vicious circle. Remember, a cup is a cup. Like a pound of lead is the same as a pound of feathers. A pound is a pound. Let your stomach be your guide to hunger and when you are done eating. Stop before you are full. Your surgery is a weight loss tool, not the whole picture. Your other tools are your calorie/protein book, your food scale, and a journal of what you are consuming. -

Manningkimball, Weight loss surgery is a weight loss tool, much like your calorie count book, food scale and exercise. It is suggested by my Bariatric Clinic that I keep my Breakfast between 100 and 200 calories, morning snack, 100 calories, lunch 100 to 200 calories, afternoon snack, 100 calories and dinner between 100 to 200 calories. That is a total of 800 calories. Between this and daily exercise you should continue to lose weight (hopefully). It is natural to have plateaus I was told, but I know how discouraging they can be. I will NOT drink my calories. I want to chew. I was told also, if I comsume too many carbs I would not lose weight as fast. Carbs such as bread, Cereal, crackers, chips, etc are last on my list. Protein is the first thing. But my Snacks are fruits such as bananas, apples, squash with no calorie sweetener, or 80 calorie yogurt,etc. You can do this, do not despair!!!! Good luck, DeeJay -
My name is DeeJay. I had the sleeve on October 24th and it was the best decision I have ever made. I started out at 248 and I am 5'1" and I could hardly walk. So far I have lost 13 pounds. That would be a pound a day so far. Down to 236. It took me about 6 months to research hospitals but I decided to do it at Puget Sound Surgical Center in Edmonds, Washington. There it is day surgery, out patient, as you will. There was no pain for me. I had a little incision pain the first 4 days, but taking a Tylenol would have handled that. They do the Arthrascopic surgery there and they incisions are tiny tiny. It has not been limiting at all and I already have energy I did not before. I have taken high blood pressure medication for 20 years. Puget Sound Surgery Center requires you to not take it 7 days before surgery and I haven't taken it since. My blood pressure is NORMAL!!!!! without medication. My pulse is 62. I haven't had a 62 pulse in over 20 years. It usually runs 92 to 95! This place is the best place I have ever had surgery in my life. I have had several including knee surgery, total hip replacement and a few others. BUT I do surgery well. I do not have nausea or other repercussions from surgery and this was no exception. I would suggest anyone wanting to do this, please contact Puget Sound Surgical Center. Day surgery for Pete's Sake!!!!

No, your decision wasn't too drastic. I wish I had made the decision for surgery done 40 years ago, then I would have spared my hip that I had replaced. One thing I have not felt, is belittled because of my decision to have surgery. I was a BMI of 47. I have tons of patient information that was e-mailed to me by my Nutritionist including what to do from day one including meal suggestions for each week. liquid, puree, soft foods and regular food. If anyone who didn't get decent or no information, I would love to e-mail them to you. I had my surgery done in the only place in the USA that it is day surgery. It was outpatient surgery. In the Seattle area. Just let me know....DeeJay -

Puree meats after you cut them up real small, blend them and then mix them with a little mashed potatos and gravy. I used Country Crock mashed potatoes and keep them in the fridge for a few tablespoons here and there. I cooked up some butternut squash and pureed them. So good with a little splenda brown sugar substitute and sprinkle with cinnamon. I have had pureed chicken, new york steak and pureed tuna noodle casserole....Yum. By then you are so ready for meat. Tonight I get to go out to dinner for my son-in-law's birthday to a Longhorn BBQ Place. I want to gnaw on a rib bone and I can!!! The only thing you can't do is eat a lot of biscuits or bread. So, taters, veggies and a rib bone with a little meat on it. If you stick out your tongue and someone can still recognize what it is, chew some more! -

Your nutritiionist should have given you an entire packet of what to do along with meal plans and recipes for your Protein powder. I had cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, tomato Soup made with milk and I put unflavored Protein Powder in it. Also you can have fat free puddings thinned with a little milk, greek yogurts with no fruit pieces and if that is too thick, thin it with a little milk. I really liked the kids gogurt, went down real easy and was thinner than regular yogurt. Strain the soup of any mushrooms or pieces of chicken. MIlk, soy milk or Lactaid milk. Liquid Protein drinks too. Drink 6 to 8 cups of Fluid a day and try to get your protein up to 60 grams a day. I had my surgery October 24th and I am now on mushy foods. You will be lucky to get 300 calories in you a day. Remember drink s-l-o-w.....Warm foods may better than cold or visa versa. Does this help??? -

I puree chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy. I buy the mashed already fixed at the grocery store...Country Crock or Simply Potatoes. I took 1 ounce of a Rib Eye steak and pureed it with brown gravy and potatoes. Tonight it is crock pot chicken, sweet and sour sauce pureed with instant rice. I also pureed tuna noodle casserole with some milk. YUM! Texture! Cut it up very small and I use a hand held blender in a coffee cup. Works great. -

My sleeve was on October 24th. I had an appointment with my nutritionist today. You are to be eating about 1/4 to 1/2 cup 5 times a day. 3 meals and 2 snacks. My dinner tonite was 1 ounce chicken, 1 tablespoon rice and gravy pureed in a cup. That measures to about half a cup. You are right on track as far as I am concerned. -

I don't know who your doctor is, but I went on a doctor directed modified South Beach diet. I ate as much meat as I wanted but no carbs but some greens, beans, brocolli, cauliflower. No peas, corn, etc. Keep your carbs under 40 a day, mandatory. I even ate out and had wine. I ate scrambled eggs for breakfast with cheese, omlettes, tuna, turkey breast, ham for lunch...even hambergers. Dinner was steak, fish, chicken, pork chops with veggies. I lost a pound a day and shrunk my liver by 50% I actually got a gold star on my picture of my liver that my doctor presented to me after surgery! I think your clinic is using the wrong approach...No breads or carbs....easy to do when you are eating meat and certain veggies. Please do not worry about surgery. It was the easiest surgery I have ever had. Next to no pain after the surgery. In fact, if it didn't irritate my stomach, I would have taken Advil instead of the liquid Oxycontin they gave me afterward. First week after surgery is great for me but the liquid diet. Got trying. Now I am on pureed food! I get to chew and have texture. Friday the 8th I go to mushy food! WooHoo! My surgery was on October 24 and I have lost a pound a day since then. Tonite I had pureed tuna noodle casserole. Yesterday, I had pureed stead, potatoes and gravy! Was tasty!
