  1. I refused to weigh myself for a few years before I got to this point, so I don't mind it as much now. We all have something...

    Compulsive Overeating

I have learned that there is "code" for this too. He loves to complain that there is nothing in the house to eat. I can patiently go through and point out everything (chicken, cold cuts, leftovers, etc) but what he really means is: something easy, portable, and "yummy." Problem is that if i have too much of that, it disappears. Anyway, thank you all for your input. Seriously, if anyone else has ideas to help I will be a sponge. The kids' wheels turn when they see this played out; I explain to them that it's not behavior they should be striving for. But at 11 and 14 they are somewhat complicit too.

    Compulsive Overeating

Hi, Ms. Skinniness. I'm not the binger, he is…but even after 16 years we are still navigating this. We have tried: no trigger food in the house. He fills the void with any kind of food. But if I keep things to a minimum he also gets upset at that. (I do the shopping.) So, everyone eats yogurt, but often I will go to bed with 10 yogurts in the fridge and wake up to none. Peanut butter: I now buy the individual serving packages from costco and hide them so the kids can make lunch. Cookies and cakes are just not in the house, most of the time, because they're huge triggers. We've put a marine lock on the fridge. He started popping the adhesive pads off with a knife and then super-gluing them back into place, until I noticed superglue on the floor. Broke one of my good knives, too. At that time, I said, "Man, wouldn't it be less trouble to get in the car and go to the store?" He said, "You don't understand." I agreed…ps none of this was hostile. I lock food into my car, put it in my closet, under the bed. He will search my office top to bottom if I hide it in there but won't disturb me in the bedroom if I go to bed first. I'm not sure he knows about that. I hate being complicit in this way, but there are some things that he cannot get into (either tough to replace, or meant for someone else, etc) and so this is what we do. I guess this is just the question of, "Is there anything else I can do that I'm not thinking of?" If the answer is no, stay out of it…so be it.

    Compulsive Overeating

So let me ask this: from the perspective of a nighttime eater, how can the people around you support you? I'm married to a one, and I don't pretend to understand everything that drives the behavior. But what can your spouse, or friends, do to help? I recognize a lot of the "don't do this" answers. Just wondering if there are strategies that can be employed by anyone else in your orbit.
  5. I use mynetdiary as an app and on the web site. This was because for whatever reason at the critical point the MFP app wouldn't download onto my phone. They seem similar, though.
  6. Being 6 weeks out, I've had two different weeks where I essentially floated all around the same scale number. What is nice now that I have more data is that I can look at my chart (I weigh daily) and see the pattern of loss, hold for a while (with occasional ticks upward), loss, etc. I couldn't see it at 3 weeks. All I could see was swoop downward, stall. I like weighing daily. I look at the number, plug it in and then forget it. I mean, I know generally, but for example my husband asked today and I had to look it up to tell him. If you tend to obsess, then once a week is probably better. But you will see a good pattern after a few more weeks. While I was away last week I couldn't weigh at all and it was a pleasant surprise to get back and have a little loss. I like your attitude! I've tried to adopt it myself. Onward and upward. Or downward, rather.
  7. Back. I was grinning like an idiot on the way home. Very easy return: 5x500 row, 50 sit ups, 50 squats with no time limit. My legs are feeling it; hopefully my abdomen will be in enough shape to go back tomorrow and do another easy workout. (First Saturdays of the month are the killers, so I'll skip that.) Relieved and excited.

    Isn't It Weird....

Yes, but it was something you bonded over. I have a good friend who was sleeved 4 months before me and was feeling very down about her progress about the same time I was sleeved. And I started feeling funny that I was losing quickly; percentage wise we're about the same loss now. Fortunately, she is the first to bring it up and talk about it and we have stayed close but I could easily see it driving a wedge or making things awkward if either of us was unwilling to go there.
  9. I'll be lucky if I get through the warmup. I think we're doing some maniacal EMOTM clean followed by three burpees. Yay, burpees. Fortunately the coach knows about the VSG and the hernia; he's not going to let me go crazy even if I was so inclined. I'm that person who loves the fact that I have worked out, but usually dreads going. And mutters "I'm crazy" all the way over...

2 Years Out.....almost Forgot That I Had Been Sleeved!

I'm a newbie but read your blog before subscribing to VST last month. It was really inspiring and I will look forward to your update!
  11. I get to go back to CrossFit today! I'm very excited. Well, and dreading it a bit…but mostly excited. I was hoping to get some tips about how to handle Water intake at the gym, as well as what your individual experiences have been with food/protein shakes or whatever, either pre or post exercise. What works for you? What would you never do again? I'm thinking about having half a shake about 30 minutes prior, and then finishing it immediately after the workout. Well, that's if I can crawl to my car and lift my arms after not being there for 6 weeks.

Eating And Hydration Pre And Post Exercise

This is great. Our WoD is at 5:30 today, and I am trying to get in plenty of Water ahead of time starting now. I don't really know if I will need a snack or not. I sort of eat around every three hours or so, starting at about 8. So maybe I'll just have my 2:00 feeding as usual and see how it goes today. I am glad to have that visual of 4 oz in my stomach, PDX. I probably wouldn't have thought of it that way... Appreciate the input!

    Help!

The brain fog is totally normal. Not only did you just have major surgery a couple of weeks ago, but your body is still in the process of adjusting to the changes. Add the thrush to that, and who knows!? My worst case of illness-related brain fog was after a kidney infection a while back. It simply took me weeks to get my brain fully back in the game. I think anything systemic like that (or like our surgery) will do that in the worst case scenario.

    Best and worst "compliments"

Zen, I bet you could get a large line of people to run that half truck over her when you're finished. Sheesh. This was not about weight, but when I saw her last week my mother said, "Man…you have had your hair all sorts of styles and shades but after all that I think you've finally hit upon something that is flattering." Say it isn't so, Mom.

    Anybody Else Cheating?

I just started to experience something the OP has alluded to…and that is that when you're at the puree and mushy stages it starts to become harder to distinguish between what is mushy and what belongs in a later stage, etc. I'm at 6 weeks now, and in mushies now. I can easily see now that there's a variety that it would be quite easy to justify pushing on to full solids (which is at least two more weeks away.) Because some parts of mushy are judgment calls, in a way that full liquids are really NOT a judgment call. I'd urge you (as having just gone through it) to go back to your doctor's guidelines and stick with them. You don't want to be the person who causes a leak by doing something completely preventable. Because I'm so close to having completed that stage I can say yes, it sucks. No exaggeration. But one of the (only?) nice things about the lack of food choice is that if you stick to it, as monotonous as it is, you start to have a certain freedom in that. You don't have to obsess about what you are going to eat, because it's laid out for you. Part of this process is surrendering to the fact that there is a process. (I think, anyway.) Good luck!

    Clothes

For me it's more like 30 pounds to a different size. I don't know why... I probably shouldn't wear my bigger, fitted stuff anymore (I've given some of those clothes away.) I am fitting just fine into clothing that I was wearing before surgery, if it was slightly tighter on me (i.e., my bad idea jeans from that time period.) I do have some smaller sizes in my closet, which is a godsend. Yesterday getting dressed for an event, I realized that my go-to black pants from last year were either faded or too big. I stumbled across a formerly way too tight pair that worked fine. And I have a pair of smaller jeans and cords waiting on my shelf until I can really justify them. I can zip them, but they are now the bad idea jeans. Probably another 5-10 pounds and they will be fine.

    Let's Talk Fashion

Okay, I am having a hard time visualizing what you're saying. Are you saying your waist is bigger than your legs or vice versa? Sorry… I think my problem is opposite: I have an hourglass shape. But in case this is what you're saying, the brands that work best for me are Levi's, Denizen (essentially also Levi's), Calvin Klein, and occasionally Gloria Vanderbilt (at Costco.) GV tends to look like mom jeans to me as the waist is higher, but I figure right now that's good for holding in the jiggly. I have issues with some of the skinny jean cuts in that they just don't fit my calves. One of my friends who is built more straight up and down than I am swears by Lee jeans; I think she gets them at Kohl's. But I don't know if they have a skinny jean style. One other suggestion although I know it is an expensive one is Not Your Mother's Jeans (not sure if that's the exact name) from Nordstrom. I know they have skinny jeans and they're spandex heavy so they work on a lot of figures. But they are not cheap!

    Ugh!

I'm sorry! They're not fun. I do have this kind of amusing mental scene playing out of you calling your mother in the middle of the night and saying, "I'm dying! I'm bleeding. WHAT IS THIS?" I'm warped. Don't mind me.

    I Need Help!

You might want to try Premier Protein if you live near a costco. Those were okay for my liquid phase and they taste better than some of the others. I have a couple of half-used large containers of protein powders left over from prior to surgery and it's a shame. After 3-4 weeks of that, I don't care if I ever make another Protein shake again. But the RTD is okay.

    Post-Op Week 3 - I Miss My Coffee!

I'm also allowed to drink coffee (I stumbled across this info in my post-op packet about 2 weeks out.) I keep it to one a day, and I also feel like it tastes a little different. But it's one of those soothing habits and it gives me a little warmth while I wait for the thyroid medication to kick in. I'd ask…it can't hurt.

I have been very lucky with recovery and loss thus far. First two days, a little discomfort but everything went better than I expected. I don't know what I lost pre-op, but in the 7 weeks since the pre-op appointment I'm down about 32 pounds (234 to 202.) There was one weeklong stall in there, but I am ecstatic about the overall progress.
