Last November (Nov 25 to be exact), I had the Gastric Sleeve surgery. My older sister had it 6 months earlier and I figured she’d done so well with it – we share some of same DNA – it should work well for me, too. She didn’t have any side effects, complications, etc – so I wouldn’t either, right? WRONG!
Except for a few good days, I had a really rough first 3 months. Here’s a run-down:
11/25: Gastric Sleeve Surgery. Everything went well. No pain at all. It was almost too good to be true (and it was!) Went home the next day. Thanksgiving 3 days later – didn’t bother me at all being around all that food – wasn’t really interested (must’ve been the pain meds!)
12/9: Nausea/vomiting so bad that I couldn’t eat/drink anything over the weekend – maybe had 8 oz liquid over a 3-day period. My husband took me to the ER, and they admitted me for 3 days! Severe dehydration caused by nausea, which in turn caused acute pancreatitis and acute renal failure. 4 bags of fluid pumped into me at the ER before being admitted, and then not really allowed to drink/â€eat†until my numbers stabilized. I was released 12/11.

12/25: Christmas Day. Spent the day in ER. Again, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Merry Frickin’ Christmas! They gave me fluids and meds and after 6 hours, sent me home.
12/27: Two days later --- nausea, vomiting, etc. My husband called my Dr. and he said go back to the ER and don’t leave – make them admit you into the hospital…
12/27 – 1 / 4: Yes, that’s right – 9 days in the hospital. Missed Christmas. Missed New Year’s. And my husband will probably be canonized as a Saint by the end of this, for all he’s put up with. They tried to figure out why I was so nauseated, etc – CT Scans, Endoscopy, etc. They thought it might be ulcers at the top of my stomach, but couldn’t find anything. So after all is said and done, they inserted a picc line into my upper left arm and set me up to have nightly TPN IV’s at home. A total of 1,200+ calories pumping thru my body every night, so weight loss was halted.
1/4 – 2/6: TPN IV at night for 10 hours while I sleep for 5 weeks. Needless to say, I was thrilled when it came out!
Ironically, even with ALL that I went through, I never once thought that this surgery was the wrong decision. I’ve never regretted it. I still think it was a great decision and that it has changed and will change my life for the better.
