I had my surgery November 7 and I know what you mean. I can't really drink more than 4-5 ounces (I measure) in about 20 min. When I try to do the protien shakes the thickness makes it even less. I am now supposed to be on softs since Saturday and tried a scrambled egg and ate maybe half. Seems like I should be having more volume but I guess my sleeve may not be ready. I have not vomited yet but have had moments where I thought it was coming up. As I have read alot on the forums, I am curious as if it is related to the healing of the sleeve itself (swelling etc) and the size of the sleeve itself (based on the bougie used). Any thoughts???

Long Term Health Issues With The Sleeve
psis replied to scarlet333's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cancer---my father had a partial gastrectomy for ulcers in 1972. (This was before they knew it was from H pylori and could be treated with antibiotics). NOW in 2013 at the age of 81 he has been diagnosed with gastric cancer. The remaining stomach was removed except a 5% pocket at the top. I found out that "previous gastric surgery" was one of his risk factors for development of stomach cancer when I was researching his diagnosis. THAT WAS 41 yrs from surgery to cancer. During that time, he has lead an active life....41 years worth. I made the decision to have my VSG after his diagnosis.....and no I was not afraid of gastric cancer. I was afraid of having a heart attack, stroke, diabetes etc....from my obesity. That would kill me sooner than the gastric cancer. I am sure the bariatric surgery community has ongoing studies on the long term effects of VSG. Unfortunately, we won't know those results for many years as the early sleevers start to show these effects. In life, we all make choices that may have long term effects on our health. That is why ANY decision we make concerning our health matters. Be it smoking, alcohol, drugs.....and yes food. It is an individual decision. -

My surgery was November 7. I started the preop liquids on Halloween. Starting them made it more real for me so I know where you are coming from. Even though I knew in my brain that this was what I needed to do....I was still having all these thoughts about how did it come to this...having surgery to help me control my out of control self. I found a good therapist that I was able to work through alot of my feelings with but I still had a few "WTF am I doing" moments. The hunger will pass after 2-3 days of the liquids. Get off the coffee as much as you can. I was a hard core coffee girl (espresso every morning) and now I have not had any since the pre op diet. I also think the diet (other than shrinking a potentially fatty liver) is sorta a test to see if you can do what you are instructed to do...can you control yourself for one short week?? That's the first step to taking control of your whole life. And believe me when I tell you this is a LIFE changing event. Your sleeve will never let you overeat again....period. I am only a little over 3w out and I can tell you that it is the biggest change I have ever made in my life. There have been periods of anger, frustration and yes regret. But I know in the long run, I am adding years to my life and hopefully preventing a lot of obesity related medical issues in the future. I wish you much luck this week and remember this is the first step to something great that you are doing for yourself. (by the way, are you a CNM....I am) -

Great choice of surgeon. His complication rates are low and your BF will have a good experience there. I was very happy with the care I recieved. -

WOW!!! All those clothes. Thank goodness I work at a hospital and all I have to do is choose a smaller scrub size to put on. No business suites for me. I have been worried about replacing my closet with smaller stuff and the costs involved but I can see you guys have ALOT more to replace. GOOD LUCK and enjoy shopping in the "regular stores". -

I am 7 days out and I know what you mean. I am on Clear Liquids till Saturday and my doctor said for the Clear liquid phase it is fine to have regular (sugar) clear liquids and this would make you fell perkier. I had been doing so well on the low sugar stuff pre op that I thought.....nah... I'll just keep doing that. By day 4, I felt like I was getting mono. Just dressing would make me tired. So I finally broke down and drank a couple of capri suns that belong to my kids. WOW, within the hour I could feel some energy returning. As far as the Protein goes, New whey Protein Bullets have 42g. (GNC)They are like syrup so you definitely need to dilute in your Water bottle to get them down but that's over half of your daily needs. I used the grape and fruit punch ones and mixed with 24oz of water then added grape mio in one and Crystal lite fruit punch in another and could not taste the bullet at all. I sip those at work in the AM and usually finish by lunch. I, as you, am wondering about the future. That is why these forums are so great. It gives us the ability to ventilate and the support from fellow sleevers. -
I am 4 days post op and I ventured to the grocery store today with my husband. LESSON #1: I am not strong enough to control my sense of smell or sight. I had to leave and go sit in the car.

I did all liquids for 7 days pre op and was encouraged to drink 70g of pro per day. I used New whey Protein bullets. They are 3.8oz but don't even think about taking them straight. They are strong but work well when diluted in a Water bottle about 16-24 oz. These are also helpful post op when you are trying to get in your protein on a clear liquid diet. Isopure Protein powder also has 27g pro per scoop and comes in flavors or unflavored. I use the unflavored and mix it in with low carb shakes like Adkins or EAS. You can pretty much get all your pro in those 2 servings alone. This is important if you are doing liquids pre op so that you have more strength and energy post op when you will need it the most. It is true that all the pre op diets are different depending on your doctor so certainly check with them to get a list of exactly what they are wanting you to take in. Be cautious with early dieting as it can weaken your body's immune system and if you get sick your surgery could be delayed.

I am day 4 of my 7 day liquid pre op diet. Last night my daughter's girl scout troop had an 80's sleepover. Of course, we ordered pizza and the leader asked me to go pick it up. OMG...they were not ready so I had to sit in the pizza place for 10 min. PULLING my fingernails out would have been less torture!!!! I was practically drooling on the floor. Then when I final got them....7 pizzas in my car for the drive back. THE SMELL WAS INCREDIBLE!!! The long and short was....I delivered the pizza, DID NOT even lick one....and drank a Protein drink instead. This by far has been my worst temptation thus far. I can only assume there will be many more. I did learn a little more about my eating behaviors..... The thing is......normally, I don't even really eat pizza that much. -

II like the Metamucil idea. I feel like my stomach is digesting itself. Maybe that will be more filling. -

check out Dr. Guillermo Alvarez YOU TUBE channel endobariatrics. He does informational videos and has a nice one about GERD and how it is often caused by the obesity itself with all the extra "pressure" of the fat on the stomach. Many people report that their GERD is resolved with weight loss. check it out. -

I am on day one of my 7 day liquid diet pre op and I have a terrible headache which I am sure is sugar withdrawal. My daily calorie intake is supposed to be 800-1000/day. Hang in there. I feel your pain!! -
