question about surgery requirements at NYU

I am having my surgery with Dr. Ren-on Aug13--I have Oxford freedom--which requires no history or 6 months of dieting---i was approved in 2 weeks with just a physical from my PCP and a letter stating i needed the surgery.---I heard that Oxford freedom is the "Magic pill"--the easiest insurance in NYC--i am on the pre-op diet now that is hell--but as far as NYU goes the team there has made all of this process easy and painless --so far---i go for pre-surgery tests on monday!

Ten years with the Lap Band

Hi i am having my surgery on Aug 13 with Dr. Ren. I believe I have a hernia--- I have really bad reflux---She said she will look for it and fix it during my surgery---i really like her---any advise for my experience at NYU?---I feel like everything will be ok and this is what I should do--and just knowing about you --being that you are 10 years out----really makes me feel at ease---I wish I had done this 10 years ago!

    Addiction Transfer?

Hey--My boyfriend works at the Met Opera house in NYC--small world eh?--Who is your doctor in NYC? Do you have a good PCP and lap-band Doc?--I am having my lap-band on Aug 13 at NYU with Dr. Ren. I am starving on the pre-op diet right now. But I have a family history of Bi-polar disorder and that is why I like this thread--I do medicate my self with food. And I am worried about a new addiction after the wieght loss. There are free group meetings at NYU hospital--The psych that I saw told me to see someone after my surgery because he thought that I might have difficulity being thin--so thought I would give the group thing a try. 8. I have started looking on-line at stores that i want to go to when i get to my goal wieght!---I thought I would find a fantasy purchase as a reward for all this hard work----right now I am looking at this hot red leather coat!--somthing i would never buy now because my wieght goes up and down a lot ---but mostly up--so there has never been any reason to buy really nice clothes.--I normally have like two or three pairs of pants that I can wear at any one time---i am very excited at the thought of haveing clothes that are cute and nice ---but also hot underwear!!!!!!that i have never had!
  9. wow you get to have food--all i can have is 5 slim fast shakes and 2 cups of veggies with chicken broth---i am sooooooooooooooooo hungry and dizzy----and this is just day 3----
  10. I just got approved too!--Surgery date is August 13----I am on my pre-op diet now that is hell!!!!----1000cal all liquids--I am starving!
  11. Ok i am new and I don't understand what is slime? or sliming?
  12. It was very quick for me --but they told me my health insurance is like the quickest and easiest-like the magic bullet--I am in NYC and I have Oxford Freedom---it took 2 weeks and that was all--they approved without any extra work from me.--i don't know what i would do if I had to fight.

    Addiction Transfer?

ROck-on!---you are young--and now is the time--to have a lot of fun--just be carful and watch your drinking and be safe--use a condom--i don't want to sound like a mom---but I am a New Yorker --so be safe have a lot of fun---and have some fun for me!!!!!:whoo:
  14. Wow that is great---I just got approved by my insurance today--i am having the surgery on August 13---I have only told my boyfriend (of 10 years so basically my husband), my mom, my brother and my best friend. I think is is a good idea not to tell everyone in your life, my doctor told me not to tell people that it can make it harder. Most of my friends if not all of them are thin--so they have no idea what i am going through with my weight. Also I think that this is a very personal thing to do--and very hard emotionally-so you need to be ok with it before you have every one you know giving advise and judging. At some point everyone I know will know about it but on my terms. I am telling people that i am having my hernia repaired---which is not lie just not the whole truth. After the surgery ---i will just tell people I am on a diet---they have seen me be on one many times so being in social situations and not eating much shouldn't be a problem-- Maybe in a year or two i will tell poeple the truth---once i am close to my goal and feeling very secure with the band ---i doubt anyone will feel hurt by not knowing--and if they do they will just have to get over it---i need to do this for me and only me. It is time to be very selfish with my life and my time---it is for my health and my friends will under stand that. My boyfreind was a little freaked out by the idea of me having surgery just in general---and he is worried about me---but I just told him that I am 312lbs now at 35 years old---I don't want to be 40 and 400lbs --50 and 500lbs etc. good luck--i am excited right now--i hope you get approved by your health insurance--i did today!---:clap2::whoo:

Do you have under active thyroid?

yes ---thank you ---i checked it out and i think i will try to push my doctor to be more firm with my thyroid----my TSH seems to be different every time it is checked---9.1 then 3.5 etc.---i am not on any meds for it right now---my doctor said with a high--Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibodies (TPOAb)---i will need to be on meds at some time---i think she wants to wait until my TSH is high all the time. I am just afraid that i will get the band and then not loose any weight.

Do you have under active thyroid?

Hi --I just tested postive for the antibodies--thryoid perotase (sp?)--they were really high---my thyroid levels seem to vary---9.1 then 3.5--my doctor doesn't want to put me on any meds yet --she is going to test me every 3 months and see what happens---i am going to be banded on august 13---should I try and harass my PCP into putting me on meds?
  17. Thank you ---i am getting banded on aug 13----I am not approved yet so everyone cross your fingers for my insurance!----but I have gotten really sick of reading all of these people who are having problems with thier bands--when they had very little to lose in the first place---i don't feel like this is a choice or a maybe for me----it is surgery or nothing ---I am 312lbs----my goal is 135---which to me seems insane----i would be thrilled with anything under 200lbs---199lbs---i am glad to find people who are doing this not to look pretty but for there health. I just don't understand doctors that would band somone with a BMI under 30. I dream of a BMI under 30.
