Are Protein Bars even worth it?
jess9395 replied to OutsideMatchInside's topic in Food and Nutrition
Definitely have their pros and cons... For me they do trigger restriction and I only eat the ones with 20g of protein. I use them for the times I am not able to cook a piece of fish or whatever. So they have their uses, but aren't for everyone or every situation. -
Oh... Not plan for at least a year? I thought they said not at all. Doing it before a year is up will be difficult, honestly. Just because of the nutrition aspect and getting in enough. Still listen to your body and see where you are by then!

I still think that's such a silly reason! I just finished my second marathon last Sunday. There are plenty of us out there doing it, research or not. And how would they research it without test subjects doing it?

White coated tongue can also be a sign of dehydration. Again, especially if you are early out from surgery. I had it and that's what it was.

Map my run syncs with my fitness pal I'm sure map my walk does too! Then you only have to enter it once and it moves it onto my fitness pal.

Family poaching off your plate
jess9395 replied to Megall9's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yeah I would definitely try and talk to him about your concern for his health. My husband has always been fit and healthy, but as he got older he put on a few--like 10-15 pounds. Since my surgery he's easily dropped them by a combination of us splitting meals when we go out (he always lets me pick) and me cooking healthier at home. I also do the I don't order and just pick off his and the kids plates when we all go out. -
Cottage cheese, yogurt going down too easy?
jess9395 replied to jackbh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The problem is there isn't any empirical research out there to show one approach is better than another, no scientific studies. So therefore every doctor has a different set of experiences and knowledge, so they basically give you their educated opinion and each ones education, experiences and opinions are slightly different. Some things have some research now and some doctors still hang on to their approaches because they have worked well for them in the past so why change? It's still an emerging field. -
The feast before the famine...
jess9395 replied to tiers4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes we are all different, but you said you thought the original poster would be shooting herself in the foot in your opinion. I think these boards work better when we own our own experiences and don't project them on others. I try to always do that. Lying to yourself? How? There are some threads on here about conscious choices to eat off plan not being "cheating" because who are you cheating. Does that make sense? If you fully own the food funerals and make that conscious choice, how is that a lie? if we could stick to a healthy eating plan long term most of us probably wouldn't chose surgery. It's a last resort for most of us. Just another way to look at it from someone who has been there and had some success. You will have that crane pose one day I'm sure. So far I'm only at crow, but I've got it in my sights! -

jess9395 replied to tiers4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Shooting yourself in the foot in what way? I'm truly curious? Because you may gain an extra couple of pounds and have to lose those too? Because it will trigger cravings post op and make it harder? Because you've given up habits already and you will have to start over? Like I said, I did them and in my own personal experience I really don't think it changed my journey in any way. I was really strict the entire losing period and lost 136lbs in a year down to 17% body fat. Many of the foods I still haven't added back into my diet, some because I don't crave them anymore, some because I crave them too much if I start and some because they upset my stomach. So I don't regret those food funerals. I became an athlete and continue to be successful now over two and a half years out. But I'm always willing to go back and re evaluate whether it affected me in some way I wasn't aware of. So I'd love to hear what you think the affect might be. Btw--beautiful crane pose in your profile pic! Is that you? -
Since it's right after surgery I think 4 to 6 OZ of liquid is all I can handle. I'd prefer more milk but don't want to over due it Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App You can use more milk. Or even Water. Makes it thinner and easier to drink. Just drink it more slowly over a longer period if it makes it too much volume to drink at once. The milk adds even more protein, so it's all good.

I'm right there with you! I use a shaker bottle instead of a blender for that very reason!!! Try one of those or just stirring rapidly with a spoon. Sometimes the spoon can leave it a bit gritty but I prefer gritty over frothy!

The feast before the famine...
jess9395 replied to tiers4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What insurance? I haven't heard much of that until this thread. I have heard of doctors requiring t but not insurance. Glad neither my doc or insurance required it. That said, even with my food funerals and no pre op diet, I was down four pounds between my first pre op and Surgery date six weeks later. -

jess9395 replied to tiers4me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You were required to lose a certain amount during your pre op?Yes!! For my insurance I had to do 3 months of nutritionist and I gained like 5 pounds after he first meeting and thy told me if I didn't loose what I had gained the insurance wouldn't cover me . Then they usually require some type of pre op diet . I have read some people get to eat some meals but most of them are pure liquid .the amount of weeks differentiate but I got 3 weeks and I had to loose 25 pounds (7 % of my body weight ) before surgery and I only have lost 20 so far Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Wow my insurance didn't require any weight loss or maintenance, just the documented attempts in the past. Not all docs require a pre op diet either and it varies widely from doc to doc. Some of the recent studies show no difference in weight loss between those who have the diet and those who don't. Some argue it's to shrink the liver, others argue it isn't long enough to be effective in doing that. Some argue it gets you in the right mindset to be successful. It's a bit controversial. Usually people who have done it argue in favor and vice Versa. But I think docs or Insurance requiring a certain amount of weight to be lost pre op are in the minority. -
it feels like *everything* is stored as fat Yes. Anything consumed in excess of what the body needs is converted to energy which if not used is stored as fat. Our bodies are very efficient machines developed/evolved to conserve what isn't currently needed for when it is needed.

Just for the record... We tend to overestimate calorie burn... Running a 10k (which is just over 6 miles) will burn about 600 calories (regardless of pace... 100 calories per mile is a good estimate... You just burn it faster if you run faster). That said, I'm also in the moderation camp. Go for the kiddie size! Just don't get into the habit of eating whatever you want after running! I put on about 10lbs during a training cycle doing that! Took it back off, but just be careful!

What was your goal weight set by your surgeon?
jess9395 replied to Sveglia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine didn't set one and I didn't either, just a vague notion I liked being 165 and was thrilled the one time I got to 155 as an adult (I'm 5'6"). I blew by both of those and landed at 135 -
I had no pre op diet and my experience was same as yours.

Workout regimen-What's yours?
jess9395 replied to tiffanymarie6997's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second that! Started a few weeks out and now am running my second marathon in three days! My routine depends on what I am training for, by typically I run four days a week...usually about 30 miles a week. Then I do yoga daily... Vinyasa or Asthanga classes 3-4 times a week and then 30 mins at home daily. Took me a long time to get to that level though! Start slow. And yes it gets easier. -

Why do you say that? Curious. Are you meaning she needs to add strength training as well or are you suggesting dance isn't enough in the aerobic department?
