  1. I was cleared by my doctor for all exercise as tolerated at my four week follow up. Started Couch to 5k at that point and yoga.

    Weight gain after 2-3 years?

Livsmum and jamie and Christian have all said what I would say, my experience has been similar to theirs. Up and down through my life now 2.5 years out and maintaining a 135lb loss. The sleeve will always be a permanent tool for you. Prior loss won't affect its impact. And make the most of the losing window of six months to a year to lose and change habits permanently!

    PPI's forever?

My doc prescribes for a month and then revisits. I needed them for an additional month then I was done. No problems since... Until literally a couple of days ago when I ate too much wasabi, LOL! Not doing that again. A little is fine tho. Oh and I had a hiatal hernia repair also.

    Options for my smoker?

Thanks for the tips! I definitely want to get one!
  5. it's different because you aren't doing it three times a day (or more) 7 times a week. The port limits you to 3 aspirations per day. After 30 Aspirations you need a new port and must return to your surgeon for follow up in order to get another. This limits abuse. You can't get around that. Not taking a side. Just want the right information out there. Okay so I amend my "or more" my point still stands.

    Options for my smoker?

Cool! But it's a stand alone smoker not something you do on your regular BBQ grill? Do you have to monitor it or do you set a timer and go?
  7. Bring home leftovers. Split a meal. Patronize restaurants that donate leftovers. Order a small plate or appetizer. Order a "add on" meat, many restaurants allow this--like add a shrimp skewer to your husband's meal at red Lobster. I've done all of these. Heck even if you order a full entree and only eat 1/4 and waste the rest, it's different because you aren't doing it three times a day (or more) 7 times a week.

    Options for my smoker?

Ok so do you use an electric smoker? I think I've talked hubby into getting me one for my birthday. Any recommendations on brand/features/etc?

    Getting on the activity train.....

This above, the back hurts because of weak abdominal/core muscles. That's where you need to focus. Options can range from a personal trainer to group classes (I'm a BIG yoga person but Pilates and many other group classes work the core), a gym with someone to show you how to use their resources, tons of DVDs available and free videos on the sites noted above but also on YouTube! Search for ab or core workout. Look for Erin Moetz/One Bad Yogi, she's my favorite!
  11. I find this morally repugnant as well. It's basically setting out to intentionally waste food when people are starving. It's creating an industry out of it. First world problems indeed.

    Options for my smoker?

Oooh yum! I want a smoker!
  13. No, that's ridiculous. By five weeks I was cleared to eat most solids.
  14. Lol CA is a big state with lots of surgeons and lots of hospitals. My surgeon and hospital required it.
  15. And as I have said, I am fully committing to this. That means changing what I eat. How is that not understood? I was wondering if WLS would work when what I HAD EATEN (not do eat, but had eaten) was the cause of the gain. I am NOT going to continue eating the same. I see not point in saying this over and over. If you are able to change what you eat and have already done so, what would be the point of surgery? Most of us have surgery as a tool to help us change the behaviors that made us gain. For most of us that includes portions in addition to types of foods. You've said your only behavior was choice of type of food and you've already changed that. You don't need help to change that because you've already done that. The surgery restricts food amounts. You don't need that, so I really don't see how it will help you.
  16. I think we are. You asked if it would help you change what you eat not how much, right? We are all addressing that. It won't change what you can eat, just how much. And SOME people have trouble (stomach aches etc) when they eat some foods.
  17. If you are truly staying overweight on "too few" calories. Weight loss surgery won't help you, you have something else going on. How many are too few? There are days when I struggle to even eat 1000 calories. My doctor in the past said for me to lose 1lb a week I should be eating between 2000-2400. Because of my thyroid I gain weight if I even LOOK at a carb. So eating a diet consisting of mainly carbs was causing me to gain weight. Not because of total calories but because of the type of calories. Yeah.... Actually many of us can't lose weight on 2000-2400 calories. In fact most of us gain on that many. But if you can't lose on 1000 calories a day then again I don't know how it could help you. I can eat carbs for sure, the appetite reduction you get for 7-12 months might help you change your carb habits, but after that it's pretty much up to you.
  18. Basically no. If you stay fat on very few calories it probably won't help. How many is it you get in a day? You say you struggle to eat "enough" how many is enough? And don't count on surgery making it harder to eat anything--it might, but many people have "sleeves of steel" and can eat anything. Most of us can eat crackers and chips no problem. Lots of people don't feel like eating ANYTHING at first and that part might help you change your patterns and tastes. But it's basically a restrictive procedure. If you gain weight on 900 calories a day, you need to talk to an endocrinologist or something because this probably won't help.

  20. You can still eat a LOT of chips/crackers/etc with the sleeve. Pasta might sit badly in your stomach (it does in mine, but many eat it just fine) and pizza is easy for many to eat. The thing is simple carbs like those (as opposed to complex carbs like whole grains and beans) aren't much different to your body than sugar.
  21. Well.... Let's be real, if you only ate a little bit of the wrong foods you wouldn't be overweight. No one will get fat eating half a small hamburger and six fries. It's a combo. Sure you have to eat a lot less of unhealthy calorie dense foods to be heavy.... But it's both. It's like no one got fat eating tons of vegetables. The portions and types of foods are not independent of each other. If it's a disease process that keeps you heavy then no it won't help because the whole point of WLS is to restrict eating and control portions. It won't change WHAT you eat you have to commit to that. It can help you change those habits, but you can continue to eat unhealthy foods after surgery. People do and then they gain the weight back.

    Shots & alcohol

Pain. Possible damage to your sleeve. The possibility of the alcohol hitting you so hard you pass out. I still can't have shots at 2.5 years out. Half a mixed drink or a glass of wine makes me pretty tipsy. A full cocktail and I probably couldn't walk straight. Then of course the calories. You asked for the repercussions so that's all I'm gonna say.

    Cycling Nutrition question

I don't cycle but I'm a marathoner. I use the gels and they work just fine. I also use honey stinger waffles, bonk breakers and Lara bars. The biggest problem is fiber... Stay away! During endurance events blood is diverted away from the digestive tract into the muscles and fiber will sit like a rock or make you hurl. Also make sure you get enough sodium and other electrolytes. I use NUUN tablets in my water. There are other electrolyte replacement drinks and tablets and even capsules you swallow. Electrolyte imbalances can cause stomach cramping.

    Can I eat this?

Well seems to me that if you are on puréed foods then only puréed foods are allowed unless they mention an exception. So since crackers are not puréed and are not mentioned as an exception, that's a no. I am 2.5 years out and still eat my tuna with a spoon instead of a cracker, crackers would derail my maintenance and would have derailed my loss phase.
  25. You can link articles! Please do. That's about what my plastic surgeon said as well (I think he said 3-7). Anything more is subcutaneous fat or through liposuction done at the same time.
