    Before surgery

It definitely can! If you have a tendency towards that let your surgeon or anesthetist know and they can give you meds like phengran or zofran for nausea. Or a scopolamine patch to put on the night before
  2. I'm a runner and like bonk bars which are protein and carb.

    Defeated

Can you get a copy of your plan and read for yourself if it is a specific exclusion or covered if medically necessary? If it's covered when medically necessary you can appeal their decision.

    Leaving dieting behind

Bella's situation is very different from many on here, in fact I would say her situation is very unique among Bariatric patients in general. I fully believe that this is what she needs for her new normal. I just as fully believe it is not what most newbies need. For those of us in long term maintenance, I think it's a case by case thing. Saying being restrictive long term won't work is the same thing as saying intuitive eating/educated eating won't work. We all are different people with different histories and different strengths and weaknesses. I had my surgery the same time Bella did. What works for me long term is very different than what works for her. I'm more of a 90/10 or 80/20 person. Some things I just do not eat--bread, rice, soda, sugar drinks, pasta--I just don't so you might label me as too restrictive. Other things I eat in moderation--fruit, fats. Other things are once a week--a cookie or a donut or a glass of wine. Some things once in a blue moon--potatoes for example. That is what works for me in maintenance. And I will say, my loss and maintenance has been way more uneventful than Bella's. I haven't had the medical issues nor have I had the mental struggles or needed post op inpatient treatment for anorexia. So she may need intuitive eating to be happy and live a balanced life. I do not. I need to keep myself in check and know when I have a cookie out of stress or anger and know when I have a cookie out of joy or just plain because it tastes good. I think we all need to come to what we need for both our physical and mental health. But I do not think the first year post op is the best time to do that. During that year we need to learn new habits and listen to people who perhaps know more about healthful post op nutrition than we do.
  5. Totally normal. I mean everyone is different, but this is a pattern many of us see. My doc/nutritionist didn't tell me specific amounts I had to get "up to" but I couldn't have eaten 3oz at 5 weeks. I still have days I can't eat 3oz of a protein like chicken. Other days I can. And I am four years out! And I had no interest in food for months. Some people are different, but this is totally normal!!! Don't push to eat more than satisfies you, it's a bad bad habit to get into... it's over eating. And it will change and improve. You will be able to eat more and the desire to eat WILL come back. So make the most of this window!

    DIET SODA

Caffeine and sodas are different issues. Some docs are fine with caffeine (coffee, tea, etc) others are not. Most are not fine with soda post op.

    DIET SODA

You are trusting your doctor to cut you open. Perhaps you should trust your doctors diet advice.

    C25K

I used c25k from about week four post op and now I run about 20 miles per week and have done over a dozen half marathons, a few marathons, triathlons, ragnar relays and a spartan race! It's really a wonderful way to ease into fitness!!!

    Struggling Eating at 8 Weeks

That was me at your stage. Why is that a problem? My surgeon was fine with it as long as I was meeting my fluid and protein goals. I didn't get above 600 calories till maybe 6 months out. I ran up to 10 miles a week and did 3-4 hours of yoga at that calorie level too. Lost all my weight in a year and have kept it off for over three more.

    Best protein shakes and why

Never had a six week problem. For me there was no trying to hard. Four years out, below goal, size four and happy. Worked great for me. I still rarely get to that level of carbs in a day.

    Best protein shakes and why

Yup there are post op diets that say all kinds of things and I completely believe you should go with what your surgeon says, you trusted them to cut you open you should trust their diet for sure! They are experts in what they have seen work well! My doctor says caffeine and coffee are fine and I trust my doc. Lost all my excess weight and more in a year. Have now kept it off for three. Drinking plenty of coffee and caffeine. I am a runner and need plenty of hydration. Never had a problem. Not saying go against what your doc says, but also saying if your doc says go for it, GO FOR IT and don't trust some diet on the internet more than SCIENCE.

    Best protein shakes and why

How many low carb ones did you try before determining it was the only one you could tolerate? Just asking because I literally had to try around 20 different shakes between 6-7 brands and different flavors within brands. Everyone has different ones they prefer/tolerate. And when you say "tolerate" to me that means they upset your stomach or you cannot keep them down, is that what you mean? For me it took me that many to find ones that appealed enough to me to keep drinking, but only one or two literally made me sick.

    Best protein shakes and why

See my post above, nope it's not a diuretic. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/19774754/ Says science

    Best protein shakes and why

A scientific review of the literature actually shows it is NOT a diuretic and does not actually increase urine output except in very large doses (3-4 cups of coffee) in someone who has been deprived of caffeine... and even then it's a very small increase and not consistent--- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/19774754/ Do you have scientific evidence of your other claims about caffeine?

Am I losing too fast too soon?

You really need to work on getting your protein count up. You will lose muscle mass quickly at only 20-30 grams and toh don't want to do that. I lost weight quickly as well too. As long as you take your vitamins and keep your protein count higher (what's your surgeons goal?) to preserve muscle mass, I wouldn't worry about the quick loss
  16. Sadly my insurance has really specific requirements including that the pannus had to pass the pubic bone and mine did not, so all the rashes and mobility issues in the world wouldn't have gotten mine covered. Other insurances don't allow them in any circumstances. You need to get a copy of your insurance plan and read the details and see how and if it can be covered. I paid out of pocket.

The science doesn't actually support the thought that caffeine is dehydrating: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.livescience.com/55479-does-caffeine-cause-dehydration.html

    unflavored protein powder

Well like any STORE the silly answer to that is to make a living. To the OP-science behind genepro is questionable. Make sure and read the threads and do your research about it.
  19. Yeah my sleeve kept me WAY under 1200 calories for the better part of a year, I didn't eat that many calories till close to goal. The removal of the fundus which produces most of the hunger hormone ghrelin was the difference for me. No struggle no difficulty.

    Best protein shakes and why

Oh and I like the Click coffee one too! But I was allowed caffeine, no restrictions from my surgeon on that.

    Best protein shakes and why

Everyone is different, I was the opposite I found the premade ones gross and thick and only liked the powders! Syntrax matrix (I still love the PB cookie one!) and quest (salted caramel) are my favorites.
