    Congrats! Sounds like you may have done the Disney race... uncharacteristically hot and humid for this part of the country, and no way to predict. Sounds like you did well considering. I heard they red flagged and pulled people off the course... or was that only for that half? Anyway CONGRATS!!! That was quite the feat!
  2. When we are fat we lose the natural curve of our spine because we sit differently to adjust to our weight... different "curves." We need to learn to sit differently to reclaim that natural lumbar curve. Until we do that can be a source of new pain. See pic.

    Did your surgeon not give you guidelines when you had surgery? The above advice is solid and it's how I eat but other plans have different recommendation.
  4. Most Bariatric surgeons? Not in the US, but perhaps in Australia. A few push them here, but really not many.
  5. But going from half to a whole chicken breast doesn't necessarily mean stretching... it can mean the swelling has decreased, that the person is now drinking while eating (which washes the food down and allows you to eat more) or many other factors.

    That's kind of a tall order for a message board... you need help with a food plan. Did your doctor or nutritionist give you guidelines? There are so many different plans! If you read through some posts or do a search you will find lots of information. It's hard to know where to begin answering a question like that.

    VSG Runners Question

    Just seeing this now... hope your surgery went well and you are on your way to a speedy recovery! I ran my very first half 8 months post op so my guess is you will be ready, especially if you do Galloway intervals. As for fuel... I've done it all from gu's to honey stingers to blocks to beans and the homemade stuff. It all works and depends on your preference but most are tolerated post op... BUT not always right away. So play around. Some people do have dumping episodes with the sleeve, it's mostly a bypass issue, but if you dump you may need to find lower sugar fuel sources, they exist and some runners can even fuel ketogenically. I'm not one but you can research it. My favorites are Bonk Breakers, those Cliff pouches with real food (sweet potatoes, coconut mango, etc), jelly belly "beans" (they are electrolyte ones not just normal ones) and my own home made ones--throw 1 C dates, 1 C any nut, 1 C any dried fruit and 1 T vanilla in a food processor, process till smooth (like inside a fig newton) then roll into balls and coat w coconut flour. Nuun isn't really carbonated, it's like Alka seltzer--plop plop fizz fizz then it's done. I let it finish fizzing and I'm fine. But water, G2 Gatorade, Fluid (another favorite of mine), Powerade zero... they all work. Even salted water! Weird but gets your electrolytes in! Nuun has a new thing where you can put carbs in with a second tablet too. I don't use that formula myself, but it's a thing.
  8. Mine was 71% to start!!!! My lean body mass was actually less when I started than when I finished! All things are possible with hard work!
  9. I will give you one warning... as a runner some of the poses will challenge you more than they would a non runner. Things that involve hip flexibility especially will be a challenge and don't let them push you into too much hip opening (not literally push, but encourage). Runners' notorious hip inflexibility is actually important as the hips act as shock absorbers. It's an adaptation to running. When I train a lot I don't force my hip openers. When I'm not racking up the miles my hips are looser. But some of the other areas we can be tight--calves, hamstrings, achillies tendon--loosening up those is helpful to running! For strength/muscle building look for Vinyasa, "power" and Hatha classes to start. Then you can work your way up to Ashtanga which is the real strength yoga. Very challenging! Yin & restorative are good for injury. Kundalini works a lot with breath and can be a bit mumbo-jumbo if you aren't into the spiritual part of yoga. I could go on and on... I love yoga!

    Back to Shakes?

    Oh gosh yeah if you're early out no need. It's more for 9+ months out or even years out. And yeah vary your calories/macros. I'm not a big fan of going back to shakes for two weeks. Just a couple days a week and eat sensibly according to your plan the other days.

    Skin removal

    Depends on your insurance. Mine won't cover it unless it's a physical issue--rash, mobility--and has other specifics like the skin on the abdomen has to hang past the pubic bone. All insurance plans are different you need to check your plan.

    Back to Shakes?

    When I do it I use it as part of a 5:2 type of intermittent fasting so I do 4-5 "normal" days and 2-3 "fasting" days in a week. On the fasting days I drink 3-5 shakes during an 8 hour window so like between 10am and 6pm. Nothing before 10 or after 6.
  13. Yoga is great for building muscle too! I got down to 18% body fat between the running and yoga.

    Everyone else has covered it, but I just want to echo it... no need to fuel during if you're under an hour otherwise your goal is 50-100 calories per half hour. So for longer distances keep that in mind. Lots of manufactured options but I like Bonk Breakers and my own homemade ones--dates, nuts and dried fruit. A protein and carb two hours before is perfect! Good luck! I did a 10k last weekend on my way to my 9th half marathon in September.
  16. Are you on an acid reducer like a proton pump inhibitor? Many of us have post op acid even if we didn't before and the sensations can mimic hunger. I know that was the case for me. My doc increased my dose of Protonix and it was gone.

    No but you claimed the only other viable alternative to RNY was mini gastric bypass. If some sleeve patents have success why is it not a viable alternative?

    Some of us who get the sleeve fully expect to eat less. In fact I always thought you could eat more with RNY because the malabsorption would help ameliorate eating more (for want of a better word). So perception is important when making our choices, whether they are based in truth or not. I'm sorry you think RNY is the "only" real option other than mini gastric bypass@JohnnyCakes but for some of us it works very well. I lost 100% of my excess weight and have kept it off for four years and counting. I have had no issues with GERD since about two months out and what I had early on was minor and well controlled with a PPI. My capacity for food is less than I see several of the bypass patients I know eating so there are few absolutes. My big concern with the bypass was the potential for malabsorption causing vitamin and other micronutrient deficiencies. I also was under the belief that by leaving the fundus intact, there was less reduction in ghrelin production for bypass patients and more possibility of stretching since the fundus is the stretchy part. As for a longer recovery, my surgeon keeps bypass patients in the hospital 1-2 days longer so if that is not an accurate perception, I can at least see where that idea would come from. I believed it myself based on my surgeons protocol.

    What kind of issues? Complications? They usually show up earlier. Regain? Definitely possible and in fact quite common.

    I'm four years out and carbonation still gives me stomach pain! And yeah the sugar in the juice can cause dumping in a lot of people. Then you also have the high acid in the juice. Vodka cranberry might be a better choice, lower sugar, less acid and no carbonation. I would suggest waiting, but if you do try it perhaps try before the shower so you aren't caught off guard with a bad reaction in the middle of a party.
