What Post-Sleeve Rules Do You Break?
jess9395 replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm four years out and carbonation hurts my sleeve. So I guess I'm the reason it's a rule for some! I drink caffeine but it's fine on my plan. I'm another one who doesn't do the drinking/eating together thing. I drink while eating not always but frequently. "Snacking" is fine on my plan as well or I'd have to admit to breaking that one too. Lol. I should add i maintain at goal too! -
Ladies - How did you handle the shopping transition from plus size?
jess9395 replied to Kat410's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Khols on the West coast has all sizes great sales and even full price isn't too bad. So if you don't want to spend a lot of time shopping it's a good bet. I love thrifting, but it's time consuming! -
Not buying new clothes till at goal.
jess9395 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yeah I'm with everyone else... I don't know your height or what size you wear currently... but here's why I say that.... You can see I literally could not have worn those jeans.... I am standing in one leg! Went from 271 to 135. -
Best Scale to Buy
jess9395 replied to Strivingforbetter's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I love my Fitbit aria! I don't even own a Fitbit but I like that my scale syncs to my apps, I use my fitness pal and MapMyRun -
Ah got it. I don't have any recipes I just bought mine! I did love hot and sour soup and miso soup a lot!

Believe it or not your body will put the brakes on. Your appetite will increase somewhat (most likely) and if will happen. Usually it's more trouble to drop the last stubborn pounds than to stop losing. But yeah, if you need to you eat more calorie dense food--according to your eating plan. Could be nuts, nut butter, avocado, higher fat dairy, olive oil on your veggies... lots of options! And yes eating more frequently or "grazing" is an option... usually it's something to avoid because it can cause regain if you don't do t carefully (e.g. snacking on crackers or other simple carbohydrates) but if done judiciously and with a plan it can work IF continued loss is a problem. Drinking some calories--an added protein shake, again higher fat dairy--works too. But I assure you, stopping weight loss is rarely a problem. Usually it's the opposite. Most weight loss surgery patients lose 60-75% of their excess weight.

How did you choose your goal weight?
jess9395 replied to ChaosUnlimited's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well, it's an average so the statistic factors in all the people who tried for extra. It is the average of everyone. I set short term goals... under 200, less than my husband, my wedding weight... and after that let my body settle where it would. I got smaller than I ever dreamed at 127 (less than my HS weight by a good deal) then gained back to 135 where I comfortably maintain. I hear all the time about people getting the "too skinny" comments. I echo what's been said, it's perspective and subjective. Go for health not comments. I dunno I never got any of those comments, I think it's regional... I live in CA land of movie stars! I got "you're so skinny" but it was a compliment, LOL -
Clear liquids? Not sure I used any recipes, just drank clear liquids--broth, water, G2 Gatorade (low sugar), crystal light... some people do sugar free jello and popsicles.

Semantics... easier to say Nutritionist and I like calling them "Nuts" sometimes! Also while mine are RD's some people's are not so I tend to say "follow the guidelines your surgeon and Nutritionist gave you" because I don't know what each person has or even if they got surgery in the Us.

Bruising after procedure

Yup, my lovenox site looked like that! -
5 years after surgery. Are you maintaining or gaining?
jess9395 replied to Seahawks Fan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Four years out. I gained 7lbs from my lowest and now maintain at this new point, within 5 or so pounds. -
I'm sorry to hear that. My doctor had to double my initial dose. Hopefully your hunger pains diminish.

Talk to him about an acid reducer like a proton pump inhibitor. For many of us acid mimics hunger in the early days! Even if you don't feel "heartburn" you may get a gnawing empty sensation that is easily mistaken for hunger.

BMI & approval question
jess9395 replied to Tator16's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ditto, mine was first visit! -
My plan is low carb (not ultra low) and I don't worry about fat. Most of the carbs in my diet during the losing phase were from dairy and vegetables. Fat was mostly from dairy and nuts and nut butter. Now that I'm at goal I have more fruit and legumes for my carbs. And occasionally a cookieN

Thanks! Trying hard not to feel sorry for myself. At least my upper body will keep in shape! My 15 year old son says "hey you can do weighted pistol squats!" Pretty sure I couldn't do those before the 20 lb cast [emoji23][emoji23]

Beautiful! Yeah the article came out in conjunction with the summer olympics a few years ago so if only features those athletes. True story--I thought I was curvy till I lost weight... turns out I was just fat. My plastic surgeon gave me back a bit of my curves, but everything I have left is thanks to him!
-
Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! I can't tell you how many stories like that I've heard! Luckily I heard the "snap" when it happened and was immobilized before the end of the day... and I am paranoid so following the doc instructions to the letter! I will sleep in the boot as long as they tell me, thanks for the warning!

Another thing people forget is in general a heavier person maintains at a higher calorie level than a lighter person. So as you lose weight you need fewer calories just to maintain and burn fewer calories with exercise.
-
I'm another small framed woman--5'6" and 135lbs and maintain at about 2500 calories per day. I run a lot and do yoga and have a lot of muscle mass which helps.
-
Yeah some people argue that you can't get enough calories to support it or it will throw you into a stall.... Can be true for some people, it wasn't for me. I couldn't get more than 600 calories for a number of months and not more than 900 calories for 6-9 months... but I started couch to 5k at four weeks out and yoga shortly after. Did my first 5k at 5 months out and half marathon at 10 months out. I now run half and full marathons--20-30 miles per week and 4-5 hours of yoga a week. I reached goal at a year out and now maintain at around 2500 calories per day as a 5'6" 135lb woman. So try and see what works for you!

Was running on a trail and just hit a hill wrong! Dang it!

I've seen that article and love it!!! I think there's a certain amount of form follows function but I also think that having a particular body type leads to success in a particular sport as well once you get to these elite levels! I picked up running for the health benefits. I wanted it to help me drop the weight and keep it off. But I will be the first to admit that I started yoga because of Madonna's arms and the physique of other yogis! I continued yoga because I love the mind/body aspect though. And now I'm on crutches with a torn Achilles' tendon and realizing how much each of them has come to mean to be as I'm staring down the barrel of a three month recovery!
