What do you do when you get sick
jess9395 replied to jadelynn812's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ginger tea is a good go to for nausea. There are also ginger chews/candies/lollipops and some are Sugar free. Peppermint is also good for nausea--peppermint tea, etc. The amount of sugar in cough syrup is negligible, but there are plenty of sugar free cough drops. -
Talk to your doctor. See about a proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole. Post op our stomachs can overproduce acid because they aren't adjusted to the new anatomy. Many docs put everyone on them post op.

I feel like I can eat too much
jess9395 replied to PepperCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt a gnawing feeling in my stomach that went away with food. That feeling went away with an acid reducer. Happened when I was pregnant too. Many others report the same. Is that scientific proof? Nope. Anecdotal evidence at best. But how do you provide scientific data about someone's perception of something? That's tricky at best and I have a minor in statistics and a bachelors of science from a research university. You don't have to buy it. But I suggest anyone who feels hunger every two hours post op, be your own study sample size of one. Try some over the counter omeprazole. See if it helps. Can't hurt, right? All you have to buy is some omeprazole. -

Note... you say you are eating pretty much nothing but protein... realize that the dairy products, even if unsweetened, contain naturally occurring carbs in the form of lactose which is milk sugar. And the refried beans have carbs as well, though it's fiber. Even eggs contain carbs and fat. Not saying they aren't good things to eat, just making sure you and others who read this are aware. 1/2 C 2% cottage cheese- 14g protein, 4g milk sugar, 2.5 fat 1/2 c fat free cottage cheese -15g protein 5g carbs (my plan would prefer the fat to carbs) Greek yogurt--all six oz servings 2% plain - 20g protein, 4g fat, 8g carbs Fat free pain - 23 protein, 0 fat, 9g carbs Oikos triple zero 15g protein 14g carbs (almost equal!) Dannon light and fit 12g protein, 9g carbs (The sugar added are even more sugar of course) 1/2 Fat free refried beans- rosarita- 6g protein, 18 carb Bush's 9 protein, 24 carb Kroger 7 protein, 20 carb Egg 6g protein, 4g fat, 1g carb Why would you trust your surgical team to literally cut you open and then not follow their dietary advice? At least for a couple of months? Better yet, why not six months or a year? Alcohol, cigars, coffee will all be there in a few months. So will the gym. How do you know you can tolerate it? Usually when we feel guilty it's because we know we are doing something wrong, even though we may say we aren't. When we are truly not doing something wrong we don't feel guilty. But you asked a question. I followed my doctors rules to the letter for a year till I was at goal. I chose the surgeon I trusted so I trusted them to know way more than I did about weight loss surgery and how to make the best recovery and lose weight most efficiently and permanently. I still follow it most of the time and I'm four years out. -
Difficulty drinking my protein shakes
jess9395 replied to Chocolatay33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have to keep trying till you find one you can stand. I had to try about 10 brands before finding syntrax matrix and quest. I prefer powder mix. Other people swear by premiere protein and I can't stand it. Some like syntrax nectar because it's more juice like. Nashua Nutrition website will sell sample pack of any one they carry for $1! Try a bunch! -
Oh I didn't say you were, but the post above yours referred to it. I don't think anyone who really does endurance athletics or true heavy lifting should worry about carb intake while doing those things, but a lot of people worry about it for their couch to 5k or 5k race. Totally unnecessary for those things. Most of us don't even need them for 10k. There's even a lot of science about keto adapted athletes. For optimal performance perhaps some carbs are better, but most of us on this board got into it to burn fat not perform at top performance. I ran 20-30 miles per week and did 4-5 hours a week of intense yoga training on 600-900 calories per day. I consume far more than that now at goal, but it wasn't necessary before then. And I'm far from a back of the pack runner.

I've stopped tracking for the most part except for spot checks a couple times per month so I will check today! I'm four years out and maintaining at goal, for reference. -
Do I need surgery still? A reality check
jess9395 replied to wjgo's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
A long time poster on here used to say something I have adopted. She says she considers this weight MAINTENANCE surgery and I agree. I've lost 50-100 pounds more times than I can count. This is the first time I have EVER kept it off. 135 lbs for three years now. -
I'm glad it's betting better but sorry it feels like starting over!

Vitamin and Calcium Research for VSG

Thanks@Berry78 for sharing! I now remember hearing that about B12 early out as well and have been carefully to supplement that but had forgotten why. Being post menopause I hadn't worried about Iron but came back as deficient back in May which triggered an order for a colonoscopy because, well post menopause they assume it's a GI bleed unless proven otherwise. The colonoscopy was clear so we added iron supplements. Now that makes sense! -
Carb loading in general has fallen out of favor for endurance athletics.

It's because there is a lack of scientific peer reviewed evidence to back up a particular diet so each doctor uses their best clinical judgement based on their expertise and experience. We chose our surgical team based on that expertise and experience so we should probably trust their dietary advise for the same reason.
-
I've heard this argument and I have yet to see any peer reviewed science to back it up. I'm sure it varies from person to person, but I ate less than 600 for more than 6 months and less than 900 until goal at a year. I'm four years out and maintain at well over 2000 when I run I'm closer to 2800 (I'm currently rehabbing an injury so no running). And that's after years of yo yo dieting.
-
How on earth is that a purée? Nope. If your stage is purees then unless you purée the California roll it's not a purée. Rice had no place in my plan until I was at goal. Even now four years out it doesn't sit well in my stomach so I don't eat t.

Yup I had all of those except the mouthwash too. And I had an antinausea patch for behind my ear too. The enmend is an amazing anti nausea! So much better than zofran (generic name for zofran is ondansetron). It can be really pricey though.

Vitamin and Calcium Research for VSG

I can speak to the calcium carbonate versus citrate issue. It's not about where it's absorbed it's that carbonate needs an acidic environment to be broken down efficiently. If you take acid blockers or have less stomach acid produced because of less stomach, citrate is optimal. Of course individual mileage may vary. I had some issues with my parathyroid glands (which regulate blood calcium) and had to have three of the four removed. My endocrine surgeon made the normal recommendation for his patients and gave me lots of calcium carbonate... I wound up with tetany from low blood calcium and it took a long time for us to get it regulated again post op because we didn't take into account the lower acid in my stomach to break down the carbonate. I had a bone density scan (typical when you have parathyroid issues) and we found a ton of undigested calcium carbonate showing up on the scan in my intestines! -
What does your plan say? Everyone's plan is different. I took in a totally different number of calories at a week out, a month out, three months, six months, goal, etc. some plans specify calorie counts some don't. You trusted your surgeon to cut you open, trust your surgeons dietary advice.
-
Also to clarify, for me personally I don't waste any calories on candies. The sugar alcohols I consume are in protein bars or things like that. I wouldn't waste 72 calories on four pieces of candy.
-
Sorry, wrote in a hurry... what I meant is everything in it is based on peer reviewed articles and there are in text links to the works cited. See the numbers in parenthesis? Each number links to a peer reviewed article.

I think understanding what is meant by "net carbs" is important and knowing if you are counting carbs for calorie reasons or for other reasons. And if you don't have time to research.... trust your surgical team, your dietician, the experts in your surgery. Don't trust advertising or strangers on the internet.
-
I calculate my own net carbs, I don't use what the label says. Here is another peer reviewed article that explains how I personally compute my net carbs.... because for me it's not about the calories, it's about the effect of carbs on blood sugar, weight and fat burning-- https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/net-carbs#section3 It talks about and has links to articles that discuss IMO's.

I eat my tuna on cucumber discs. I get the Armenian one (some stores label them snacking cucumbers) because you don't have to peel them. I also like to make pepperoni chips I "toast" the slices to crisps in the microwave. Or cheese ones--thin slices cheese or shredded cheese piles--again in the microwave or the oven till almost burnt. They make a chip. Whisps are a similar thing you can buy already made.

Took me the better part of a year before I could "pound" water and it's still like 8 oz max at four years out. Breaking up the density or surface tension or whatever it is is a big part for me. Like our tap water is from a well and my whole family loves how it tastes.... but it sits "heavy" in my stomach. Bottled water does not. I also add NUUN electrolytes to mine... started because I run, but I do it when I'm not running too now because it breaks it up and adds a non sweet flavor. The tablets fizz though so wait till they are done before drinking, I learned that the hard way! Yikes!
