Post pic of your scars?
jess9395 replied to altraoiche's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are alternatives. Yes I had them post op, but my daughter is allergic to adhesive and gets welts too and she's had stitches before and once they put hypoallergenic glue and it wasn't bad and the other time they just left the stitches without anything (they did tiny tiny stitches because it was on her face) and she didn't scar. They don't HAVE to use Steri strips, talk to them! -
It was the hippy dippy part. Sounded very judgmental.
-
Oh and BTW I can lift heavy weights and elliptical with the best of em.
-
Um, wow, I don't know how to respond to that. I really hope you didn't mean that to sound as judgmental as it did. For sure everyone has to find what works for them, but hippy dippy is the furthest from how I'd describe myself and I think you using words like that may stop people from trying something they may discover they like. I think you can't truly judge an exercise (or any new activity) and whether you like it until you give it a try. And by that I mean try it long enough so you can develop a small amount of competence so you can really see if you like it or not. It's like anything new, one bite isn't enough to really see. And if you are struggling you may not like it, but you limit your life choices if you write things off too soon. You may be spot on that you personally won't like yoga (though each type is different and some are peaceful and relaxing and others are a tough weight training workout, you might be surprised) but don't write it of as hippy dippy and discourage others from trying it.

Others finding solid foods unpleasant?
jess9395 replied to Lallylocks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Eat slowly so you can notice the stop signals and stop. The discomfort is from eating too much (your tummy can handle a smaller volume of solids than it did of soft stuff) or too quickly. Your tummy can't hold much, be careful. -
Ditto I was allowed salads at 6wks and have had no trouble with it

This too shall pass. Go slow. Rely on soft foods mostly while gettig your body used to the solid stuff little by little. Eat only s few bites at a time and that will sit better. Been there done that, it gets better -

One was inside the top part of my belly button so that's no biggie...then two that are to the right of my belly button but higher, by about two inches. They are about two inches apart right, one an inch higher than the other, but so faint they won't show in a pix. Right now they are more on my side than my front but I think they migrated with the weight loss and used to be more toward the front. Mine was emergency surgery like it was gonna burst, so I don't know if you plan in advance maybe it can all be done through the belly button or lower than the bikini line, but mine aren't. -
Ahhhh haven't seen it but I hear it's good!

When did your hair loss start?

I'm voting for luck of the draw... I still have protein shakes a year out and lost my hair starting at 6 months! I hope you avoid that! Good luck! -
When did your hair loss start?
jess9395 replied to EllieMae's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got all my protein and took biotin and collagen... And started losing hair 6 months out. That's on the late side, but don't count yourself out of the woods too soon! I am a year out and it's slowed considerably but not completely stopped. -
Exactly!! Yoga is one of the best ways to restore that lost balance! And a good teacher won't let you get into a position where you could hurt yourself. All balance poses start with all "corners" on the ground and you only lift off when and IF you feel ready!
-
You've never had a good teacher who can show you modifications for curvy yogis then! It's not for everyone, but like with running I think you need to build up your abilities to the level where it becomes comfortable before you really know if you will like it or not.
-
I respectfully disagree on the "you like it or you don't" part. I HATED running as a kid, in my teens, as a young adult, pretty much always. I was never ever a runner. I hated couch to 5k....except for the feeling of accomplishment when I did it. I hated running for the first six months while I was building my base. But I wanted to give it a fair shot because I liked how I felt afterward and I liked what it does for my physical fitness and abilities. I didn't start to like it till about the sixth month... I think sometimes you grow to like it once you can really DO it and not before. So I encourage people to give it a fair shot and try it. And wait to decide if you enjoy it (I wouldn't miss it for the world now) until your body stops being exhausted and sore whenever you attempt it--who enjoys that? It wasn't till it got easier that I began to enjoy it.

Just for the other end of the spectrum, I am a year out and my scars are NOT gone. I used mederma and the insure nutrition scar cream. Part of it is genetics, I tend to scar and am very fair so when I get cold the color really stands out. But my gallbladder scars are gone so part of it is surgeon technique (mine used staples and I can still see the staple holes surrounding one of the scars.). It wasn't easy to get pictures but here are the best I could do. I have three in a triangle above and to the sides of my belly button. I had two more but they are almost invisible now. Perhaps the other three will follow suit, but at this point I dunno... -
I eat like you Kindle and have lost 130lbs and below goal. No helpful gut microbe transfer here! I can't eat enough for a true "meal" so most of what I do are "snacks" and I do a number through the day. Also focus on Protein but don't consider carbs the devil, especially fresh and dried fruit and oatmeal. I also do a few bites of dessert or fries when the urge hits. Mostly no bread, rice or Pasta. I exercise a lot, so maybe that does it?

sipping water makes me nauseaous.

Another thought... Have you tried bottled Water? We have wonderful tap water at our house, from a well and all, but it's too heavy for my stomach. Bottled water I do fine with. Just a thought! -
Has anyone had any positive post op experiences?
jess9395 replied to berkeleycurves's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had a wonderful experience from the get go! I am a year out, wonderful energy, lost 130lbs, gone from 53% body fat to 19% and become a runner and yogi.... Healthy as anything! No complications. -
Yes!!!! It gets easier!!! I was just thinking during my run this morning about halfway through 5 miles that my legs didn't hurt they weren't even tired and I wasn't breathing very heavily! I started running in January, a month post op. Started VERY slow with couch to 5k (actually I think my app was 5k runner). I could barely run the 10-15 sec run intervals. It was a killer, all the way through the app! And didn't even get up to 5k. Intervals kept me going, 5min run. 1 min walk. Still do them on anything longer than 5 miles. Another thing that helped me post c25k was to join challenges in Map My Run app and sign up for events. A mile a day streak challenge from Memorial Day to 4th of July shifted my thinking to "its only a mile". Who knew that was possible for me? I didn't even run in PE in HS! I waked at the back of the back gossiping. I have done a triathlon, two 250 mile marathons where I ran 15-20 miles total over three legs (one in the desert on trails!). I've done countless 5 & 10k's trail and road and won my age group in several, and I finished a half marathon! Never in my life would I have believed it was possible, but in short YES it gets easier.

Help! Can't stand Protein Drinks
jess9395 replied to Elisha1015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like the protidiet stuff as well, but sadly it relies on a lot of collagen and gelatin for the "protein" which isn't metabolized by our bodies so best not to count on it as a major protein source. -
