What to do with clothes
jess9395 replied to Daveo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I understand your thinking, and after my huge non surgical weightloss last time I did the same thing, but my therapist actually said that keeping them around is at least on some level saying to yourself that you plan to fail. You've failed before and you are planning to fail again. By getting rid of them, you are telling yourself and the world that you really have made the change for life. So, I'm definitely getting rid of mine. There's no way I'm going to go back to this. I just can't. I agree! Plus I don't have an attic or that much extra room! Why not let someone else enjoy them while they are in style! -

Quest bars and weight loss
jess9395 replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone is different. Quest bars are a regular part of my diet. I consistently lost weight while using them. I'm in maintenance now and not gaining weight on them. -
I was allowed at four weeks as tolerated. Lettuce was still difficult for me at that point, but by six weeks I was eating it in small amounts

10 Bariatric Mistakes - Do any apply to you?
jess9395 replied to ThreeFifty's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sure some rules are pretty standard (crackers 4 days after surgery) but MANY vary by doctor and nutritionist simply because there are no controlled studies to back a lot of it up. It's what that doctor has seen provide their patients with the most success. Some plans advance faster than others. Some allow alcohol at a certain point. Some allow flavorings in the Water. THATS why we refer people back to the doctor and nutritionist that they chose, hopefully because they trusted that doctor enough to have surgery with them so hopefully they are motivated to follow the advice/plan of the doctor they trust. -
Mine did the leak test during the surgery as well

I don't mind it in recipes like the one above... I don't use it for stand alone things like pancakes or biscuits.

Child's portion card?
jess9395 replied to MrsKarenC2008's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc gave one. I've never used it, don't want to call attention to surgery just want to live my life. As others have said, I order an appetizer or split or take home leftovers. very occasionally I order a kids meal, say grilled chicken nuggets at chick fil a, and they've never even looked at me strangely -
Say what?!?!?! That's awesome! Congrats!

That said, 1/2 C for six servings doesn't seem that bad to me personally, but you need to decide if it will be a trigger for you.

Look up Carbquick. I got it off Amazon. Or Bob's Red Mill low carb baking mix. I substitute those!

The date is set for arms and abs!
jess9395 replied to lark60's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I did mine as outpatient and had only hubby to take care of me, but I think the hospital would take care of you well! Good luck! -
So both drains were out in less than a week? Nice! Everyone I talked to told me 7-10days some even 14 days. Yeah they were all out within a week. The output had to be under a certain amount and it trickled off quite quickly!

Right??? I mean how did they find it? They didn't need to be "let in" so how could they imagine it was private? -
recent privacy concerns
jess9395 replied to CowgirlJane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm with you @@CowgirlJane in that I don't mind sharing pretty much everything. Reminds me of my teenage daughter who was aghast when I emailed naked pic of myself to strangers in foreign countries (Dr Sauceda and another doc in Costa Rica LoL). Anyhow, I'm not sharing anything I don't share in real life--my before and after pictures are in my doctors advertising and the advertising for the whole hospital chain foundation. Why? Same reason you say, I needed that when I was deciding and I so whole heartedly believe in this process I want to help others find it. Heck I find myself wanting to stop people on the street and show them my before pic!!! I mean I don't share my last name or specifics about my kids... Things where safety is a concern. But me personally? I'm so excited and proud why wouldn't I share? -
I was about a year post menopausal when I had the sleeve. Didn't seem to slow me down. I lost all my excess weight and more in a year. Good chunk of it by six months out.

Also look up Jeff Galloway. He's the father of walk/run intervals which I kept up until maybe my third half marathon. Great way to prevent injury and keep running!
-
Look up Couch to 5k plans online or apps if you have a smart phone! The app I used is called Get Running but there are lots of them. They are interval training to get you started running. They start with like walk three minutes run 15 seconds (and I thought I would DIE in those 15 secs!!!!). And slowly work you up to running for a full 30 mins at a time. Lots of places to go after that point. I was NEVER a runner even back in High School I walked when we had to run in PE. I just finished my first Marathon in May and have done a dozen or so half marathons and countless 5k's and 10k's... A few relays and triathlons too. All since my December 2013 surgery and I'm 46 years old. If I can do it anyone can!!!! I just won first overall female in a trail 10k last weekend!

What to do with clothes
jess9395 replied to Daveo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
All of the above but my new favorite is ThredUp.com they send you a bag and you mail it back (postage paid) and they either give you shopping credit or PayPal money for good condition stuff and the "rejects" are donated to charity. Then you can shop for nice gently used stuff on their site or app. If you get someone to invite you to use it you get $20 credit to use immediately to shop and can request a "clean out" bag even if you aren't shopping! If anyone wants a code for the $20 (which can be applied to shipping costs to so you can get an item or two totally free!) PM me your email and I will send one! -
Do you eat your exercise calories?
jess9395 replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
When I was losing I didn't, in maintenance I don't purposefully do it, but eating intuitively I wind up eating a good portion back -
For details on the methodology and demographics, read the full article from the Feb. 2011 issue of the JACS here: http://www.journalacs.org/article/S1072-7515(10)01090-2/fulltext The link I provided in my initial entry was for the abstract press release on the study, not the full study itself. I suggest reading the whole study for more information. I know there were 19 test subjects, so I assume there were a mix of male and female, with different body weights. The results shown were of course a statistical result across all of the patients. The statistical probability of these values being correctly representative of the expressed population is excellent (p values all < 0.001). Of course, individuals will vary somewhat. Note that while this study has a subjective component (the questionnaire about how the subject felt after the test), the results were described in objective terms (BAC levels). It is definitely possible for one person to "feel" intoxicated while another does not, but for both of their BAC levels to be the same; objectively, they are both as inebriated, and with the same loss of function, even though they might not feel that way. Obviously one study is not conclusive, no matter how good the statistical sampling. All I provided was one study. If you can find an alternative study that refutes these findings, it would be very good to see. In my (albeit quick) research, I found a few more studies, but they all seemed to suggest the same things as these findings. I don't have time to sort through it, was just wondering if you knew offhand. I have the sleeve so it's not the same, so it's not applicable to me. It's just as a statistician my first thought is always correlation is not causation and losing weight in general is a reason for alcohol tolerance to decrease so I wondered how much of this was on top of the normal decrease in tolerance. Just something to think about when reading.

How Do You Get Yourself Out the Door to Exercise?
jess9395 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Structure. I'm all about training plans and checking things off lists and challenges on apps. Started with Couch to 5k and kept going from there. I am lost without a plan! -
