What to do/use to prevent sagging skin while losing weight?
jess9395 replied to inkie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah those things can help a bit... But a lot is genetics, age and weight history (how long have you been overweight and how much did you yoyo). I lost 135 and exercise and weight train a ton and do lotions and Vitamins and tons of Water. I have 18% body fat so lots of muscle. I had to have surgery to get rid of excess skin. It shrunk to a point and about six months into maintenance it was done. -
How long can you expect to lose weight
jess9395 replied to laurarogersclark's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Your skin shrinks for a while maybe up to six months then it is what it is. You can lose weight as long as you put forth the effort! No limit. But you've had great success! CONGRATS -
Arm Lift Revision
jess9395 replied to shellbell125's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I will post some pictures when I can, but I wanted to say my plastic surgeon warned me that arm lifts have lower satisfaction rate among most bariatric patients because often they can't remove as much as we'd like simply because the skin there gets very thin and delicate coupled with the fact that the tension and stress placed on that particular scar is much higher than the scars for tummy tuck, thigh lifts, breast lifts, butt lifts, etc. if they remove too much the scar will pull and become wide and knotty. So they can't typically remove as much as we'd like. On top of that the nerves and tendons are closer to the area they are operating on than in any of those other areas so there is danger in being too aggressive there too. This of all areas really needs someone who specializes in bariatric patients. That said, compared to mine yours doesn't look nearly as aggressive. I was down to 18% body fat and had almost no subcutaneous fat in that area... And he warned me I still wasn't gonna have the true muscle definition showing through that I had underneath. He was so aggressive and I had so little fat he almost nicked a nerve separating the skin/subcutaneous fat from a tendon. Immediately post op he checked my ability to feel sensations in that area and luckily there was no nerve damage. -
General question -- Do they remove any/some of the fat in your abdomen during surgery?
jess9395 replied to Mom26's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Really? People think that? Had no clue! SMH LOL! I'm a Riley's mom too! -
I'm with the others here... Don't cook multiple choices unless you want to, they won't starve. My kids are teens now but it's always been eat what I make or you're on your own. Hubby too. I make Protein and veggie, sometimes a starch sometimes another veggie, and then I just don't eat the starch. Or a one pot meal like stew or chilli and I maybe pick out the potatoes (so does my daughter, maybe I should just start making it without now that I think about it).

How long before you were able to drink water like before your sleeve?
jess9395 replied to J170's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About six months. I can gulp away now! -
Oh and light lemonade. Lots of places that have fountain sodas have it. 5 cal, 1 carb.
-
Double tall dry nonfat Cappuccino. 50 cal, 8 carbs, 5 Protein. Sometimes I add a Splenda pack, sometimes I ask for a shot of sugar free hazelnut, caramel or vanilla syrup.

Ummmm you're kidding right? Different surgery entirely. Different type of surgeon. Different equipment. Different recovery. What do they have to do with each other? -
Thanks! Gonna try that. I've been doing versions of Eggface's protein powder cakes but this seems so much simpler!

Oooh! What brand makes that??? I want! I got sugar free davinci pumpkin syrup (like torani) and am using that to flavor stuff! -
But they are complex carbs, they aren't going to sit and turn to glucose. I'm vegetarian, most of my Protein comes from beans, it hasn't adversely effected my weight loss in the least.True, but pure protein first. Just quoting the rationale of the NUT Beans are protein. Protein with carbs though. For example a c of kidney beans has 13g protein but 37g carbs. Though I suppose you could subtract the 11g fiber for 26g net carbs. Not arguing the fact that they are VERY nutritionally advantageous, just saying why a nutritionist might prefer grilled chicken for a non vegetarian client (22g protein and 1g carbs for 4 oz)

Easy easy to fix with synthetic thyroid replacement. My mom and grandma did it for forever!

You just gotta keep trying. Everyone's tastes are different. I like Syntax Matrix (PB Cookie and Mint Choc Chip are my favorites). Now that I'm in maintenance and can have a few more carbs I also love BSN SYNTHA 6 (Mochaccino! YUM)

Losing 85% of your stomach 4ever
jess9395 replied to christy38's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Every bit of time spent waiting is another bit of time being obese. I am thrilled it's gone. And if they invent something "better" tomorrow I'm still fine with my choice. It worked. And I will live the rest of my life happy and healthy with a smaller stomach. People have had gastrectomies for decades for stomach cancer and lived full lives afterwards. So mine was done for a different reason, I am still happy and healthy. -
Yum! Thanks for sharing

I can totally relate! When I am cooking for my family (husband and two teens) it's easier because I just eat a modified version of what they have whether I like it or not. But when it's just me...he works late, they have school activities... Or it's lunch or something, I'm right there with you. For what it's worth, I say go for the insides of the pot pie. It's Protein and vegetables, right? Yeah probably more fat and a bit of carbs from the thickening flour and potatoes if there are any... But not a horrible choice! Especially if it's once a week not every day. But yeah, maybe get some staple go-to's to keep in stock. I do that, cook a bigger batch and freeze some, freeze some leftovers, etc, in single serving sizes. -
As with everything try a small bit and see how it sits then you can eat more. Most people it seems have to issues with salmon, but I did! Hurt like heck first time I tried about a month out. Waited about 2 more months and had it again and it was fine!

10 Bariatric Mistakes - Do any apply to you?
jess9395 replied to ThreeFifty's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm going to say again, different things work for different people. Check out some of the threads on moderation vs abstinence. Some people can lose weight having some ice cream (sugar free is what the person recommended), a few French fries here and there and, yes, pizza. Some doctors and dietitians preach abstinence some moderation, but more importantly abstinence works for some and moderation works for others. It's not a one size fits all. I am in the moderation camp about many things (sweets, fries, yes pizza)--and lost 135 lbs and am maintaining nicely using that plan. Other things which are triggers for me (bread, Pasta, crackers, chips) I abstain from entirely. Others make me sick so I don't eat (rice, carbonation). Did I eat ice cream on a regular basis to get Protein in? Heck no! But I warn against using too broad generalizations. 90% of the time I follow all the "rules" and 10% of the time I allow for some flexibility. It works for me and keeps me on plan and healthy!
