What body type do you have after your weight loss?

I have a 14 year old boy. You look nothing like him!

Weight Loss Surgery and Self Harm

A report in a scientifically based press source lists the following as areas for follow up studies to look at: "Previously suggested reasons for the association between bariatric surgery and the subsequent risk of self-harm include: permanent changes in body image, diet-related stress and unmet expectations of weight loss, which could increase mental health problems, leading to behaviors such as binge eating, substance misuse and self-harm behaviors. Changes in metabolism of alcohol could play a role, as well as changes in neurohormonal levels, which could lead to depression, addiction and suicide."

Weight Loss Surgery and Self Harm

Yeah not as simple as that. If a study is a true scientifically conducted study published in a peer reviewed journal, it has solid science and statistical evidence behind it. This study was initially published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) which is just such a scientific peer reviewed journal. HOWEVER as people trained in statistics like myself like to say "correlation is not causation." What this study shows is a correlation. One variable (having had weight loss surgery) is linked to another (increase in self harm and depression). That does NOT MEAN weight loss surgery CAUSES self harm and depression. It could mean that or it could mean some other linked variable(s) are in play. For example previously overweight people have a tendency to self harm or people who regain have depression or people who are born with depressive genes tend to be overweight and thus are the ones who get weight loss surgery. Correlations do nothing except provide areas for further study in the true scientists mind. They don't prove anything or say anything about what causes what.
  4. And some of us run AND do yoga! Blasphemers all of us! But seriously that's a very interesting take on it. And the analogies fit nicely with my own personal style. I do yoga AND run, and my eating style is a mix too of paleo/clean eating and other "religions"
  5. Totally depends on you and how much subcutaneous fat you have left and if they do lipo. I lost down to the mid low end of my range and went down to an 18% body fat and so had (needed) no lipo JUST skin removal. I had brachioplasty, tummy tuck and breast lift with augment. My implants weigh about 1.5 lbs total and the skin removed weighed about 5lbs.
  6. They are thinner. If you mix with milk--cow's, almond, cashew, hemp, soy, whatever, it will be thicker but never as thick as the premier. It's one of the reasons I prefer it to the premier...I don't like the thickness. That's why there are so many kinds!
  7. I LOVE the BSN Syntha 6 ones (Mochaccino is my favorite but they are all good) and have them once in a while now that I am in maintenance, but they are a lot higher carb than many.
  8. I love syntax matrix and they have cookies and cream, mint choc cookie and peanut butter cookie!
  9. I know some physicians say only whey isolate Protein.... And it is true it's the most bio available so probably ideal for the early phases (one that adds caesin for later on May last longer in your stomach for satiety and blood sugar levels...) BUT that said, for me, the ones containing whey isolate only were the ones where I had a hard time with the smell. The ones that were a combination or a whey concentrate were better smell wise. I agree with the poster who said use a cup with a lid. Also chilling and ice. Those were what got me through.
  10. Yes I can do one donut, but don't let me near a bag of chips or a box of cheese it's. We all have our trigger foods! That's why I phrase things as "what works for me." I've researched GMO's as well and don't find them nearly as scary (we have been genetically modifying food as far back as Gregor Mendel and his peas) as some other things I avoid. Again, we each make our choices. So, I definitely support people making healthy eating choices, but I don't consider a few less healthy habits problematic either. I also drink coffee daily and don't consider that a slip or a bad choice or a sign of not commuting to healthy eating and weight loss.
  11. I express my opinions but usually in a "this works for me" way, not a "this is what you should do" way. I also listen to what works for others, take some and leave the rest. I think the question "how invested are you in heathy weight loss" doesn't quite represent the discussion happening here, but that's OK. I consider myself quite invested in health--healthy weight loss, physical fitness (I run 20+ miles a week and do yoga 3-4 times a week), nutritious unprocessed foods. But I am also about balance, moderation and not setting myself up for failure. I eat "clean" for the most part 80% of the time or better, but this morning after my half marathon I had a donut! I also ate (and still eat) Wendy's chili early out--I couldn't eat lettuce early out so that wasn't an option. I have a few things I do regularly that don't count as "clean" and I don't avoid GMO food or eat organic, but I do include only healthy whole grains and avoid white sugar, white carbs, etc. I don't eat chemically fake low fat/sugar free/fat free, except in my Greek yogurt on occasion. So I don't know where that puts me in your scheme of things, but I guess what I think is its not an all or nothing for many of us. I can't get in to that all or nothing thinking, it's not something that works well for me personally long term. Because if it's not ALL I'm a failure and so it must be NOTHING and I give up. That's something I learned in therapy for many areas of my life not just food. So... That's where I'm at. Take what you want and leave the rest!

When you are too big to manage your period...

Always makes pads designed for larger women and they also have flaps that attach under the panties so they wrap all the way around. They also just recently stated making disposable panties for your period...like adult diapers but for menstrual flow. Platex makes "ultra" tampons.

    Red/pink urine explained.

Ugh always hated pickled beets but love them roasted! What I do is cut them in chunks along with a yam or sweet potato and some carrots and onions, drizzle with a little olive oil and throw in a 375 oven for about 30-45 mins (keep checking and turning them) till brown and crispy. YUM roasted root vegetables
  18. I'm almost two years out and still have one most days.

    Going alone to hospital?

My mother in law dropped me off and my husband came when I woke up. They gave me a bag which they set aside for me in the recovery room till I went to my own room.

    Working out?

I was never ever an athlete of any type. Four weeks out I started couch to 5k and yoga 3-4 times a week. 10 months out I ran my first half marathon. A year out my body fat had dropped to 18%. 18 months out I ran my first full marathon. I have done a dozen half marathons several relays and triathlons and countless 5 and 10K's. I am currently 20 months out and did a triathlon this morning. If I can do that at age 46 anyone can!
