    Does it really matter!

No, I agree, the starting weight does not make any difference at all. But by the same token, I sometimes get irked by "how many pounds total have you lost" and the "what size do you want to be?" Does it really matter how many pounds we lose or what size we get to? Am I less of a person If I only get to a size 12 than the person that gets to that size 6? I put the weight on my ticker that the doctor's staff told me I should weigh.... by looking at a chart. Do I think I will really get to that weight? Not likely. I will try my best but I think it is unrealistic. I'm getting healthier and that is what really matters. Staying healthy is my ultimate goal.
  2. Raising my hand here. I've suffered from depression for years. I've taken all kinds of stuff. But no more....I am facing my demons head on and the sleeve is working for me. Other than the first couple of weeks, I've had no depression and I'm feeling great. The compliments from others has kept me "UP".

When can i start working out?

Check with your doctor and do exactly as he/she instructs you to do. Most people can walk from day one but anything more strenuous needs to be at least 6 to 8 weeks. Be kind to your body.... let it heal before going full speed ahead.

    surgery switch not welcome news

How can he determine if you have Barretts Esophagus without a biopsy? I have had very bad reflux for years and was so afraid I would not be able to get the Sleeve but they determined it had not turned into Barretts Esophagus so I did get the sleeve. I would let your doctor know you want the sleeve and ask for a biopsy to see if it is just reflux or truly Barretts. What does the Gastro doctor say? Ask lots of questions....

    Looking For A Surgeon

WLS is just short for weight loss surgery. There are numerous types and you have to go with the one that is best for your medical issues. I had the sleeve but I didn't have a lot of comorbidities. If you have High BP or diabetes... I think the Roux NY is the best. There are more types of course but I am not well versed in them. I wish I had done the surgery when I was younger. That's my only regret. You'll do fine.

    Looking For A Surgeon

Hi Britt. I just wanted to wish you lots of luck in this. I had my surgery here in the US so I have no advice about the doctors in Mexico. You might get more answers if you post this in the forum for foreign surgeries/ Mexico/ etc. There are many people on t here who went to Mexico so you should get a lot of responses if you are in the correct forum. I highly recommend the WLS so good luck you.

    Protein shakes ugh

I'm good with the Atkins and Premier shakes but I've found that the shakes are a very important part of this diet as far as getting all of the Protein in. Keep trying till you find something you like. You may have to add powdered protein to your food.
  11. The problem with telling a few select people about WLS is that they never keep it to themselves. They will tell one or two people who tell one or two people more and then they tell one or more people. You then have people watching every bite you eat, watching every pound you lose or gain, and many of them secretly hope that you fail. A few years out if you gain a few pounds they secretly feel elated that you had surgery for weight loss and can't keep it off. Who needs that additional pressure? I am not a big social media person as far as sharing my life for all to see so the thought process of sharing personal medical details with people who don't have a need to know is just silly. I do share on this forum because we are all in the same boat and offer the same support without fear of judgment or betrayal. On the outside...it's not that safe.

    Is it normal?

Yes, you are very normal. This is major surgery and though complications are very rare...they are very real and can happen to anyone. Your husband is correct, there are many complications to consider if you don't have the surgery. The good thing about the surgery Is that these complications will decrease as you lose weight.. Only you can decide if you are ready for surgery because you are the one who will have to do the work and follow the rules. Wishing you luck on whatever decision you make.

    Late Leaks? Freaking out!

Hmmmm, it is so rare, why would you focus on this?
  14. I didn't have a drain at the hospital or at home. Wow, call the doctor or let someone you know in the medical field look at it. Good luck Keewee.

    Week 2 stall?

dsardinas.... you're not at a stall, you lost a pound!!! A stall is when the scale does not move at all. I hit my first stall at week 3 and have had a couple of them since. Other weeks I might lose one or two pounds.. As long as the scale is going down and not going up, I'm not going to complain. In the perfect world I would be losing 6 or 7 pounds per week but last time I checked this world was anything but perfect. Its hard to measure weight loss in the first couple of months...success is more visible over the first 6 months and I guarantee that you will have lost more in 6 months after WLS than in any other 6 month period. Good luck to you, I'm sure you will do fabulous.

5 wks out and stll in stall!

Shelly, it sounds like you are going through some depression here. Please be patient, the weight loss is coming. everyone's body is different and yours may be in in panic mode at the extreme loss of calories and thinks you are starving, which causes the weight to not go down. Keep drinking your Water and increase the Protein but try to exercise more than twice a week. If you could do 30 minutes every day it would make a big difference. You will see big changes coming, you're just a little slower coming out of the gate. Try to remain positive and get moving. If you don't have a scheduled doctor's appointment then make one. The doctor might need to review a few things that might be going on with you. Everyone's health issues are different and all need their own medical approach. Your doctor and nutritionist should be able to help you with yours. Good luck and will keep you in my prayers.

My surgery with Dr. Illan in Mexico

You're already a beautiful girl, I can't wait to see your progress pictures. Congratulations on your new healthy life.
  19. Eating is part of living. Having the WLS helps me limit the amount that I eat but the research and classes have helped me learn how and what to eat. As long as I employ these training rules to my meals I am okay regardless of where I eat. I prefer to eat at home where I can eat what I am supposed to but going to restaurants is part of our social life. I go to the restaurants to enjoy my friends and the conversations... the food is just something that comes along with it. I try to order the healthiest thing I can find on the menu, eat what I can and take the rest home. A number of times I have found I was unable to eat the order once it arrived at my table but I didn't make a big deal of it I just ordered a "to go box" and continued on with the fun. I always order Water with lemon but I don't drink it. I try not to call attention to myself when I am at a restaurant so that it is not uncomfortable for myself, my friends, or the wait staff. Last Wednesday we went out with family members, none of which know I've had WLS, and I ordered a steak that came with the salad and baked potato. I had about 5 bites of steak and 5 bites of salad and was satisfied. I gave the baked potato and 1/2 my steak to my nephew and the other half of the steak to my husband and nobody else even noticed. Everyone else was so wrapped up in eating their own meals and the conversations going on that it was a non-issue. I didn't have WLS to quit living... just to slow down the eating and this works.

    Diet Stages

At two weeks I started my pureed foods as well and did fine. I pureed tuna with mayo and a half of hard boiled egg. I couldn't eat but about 5 bites but it was protein and it filled me up. Did the same with chicken and it was wonderful. I ate grilled/baked Talapia too and since it is so flakey I ate it as it was. It was a life saver. You won't get leaks from eating pureed food. Just don't be eating chips and hard candy and junk. If you can only eat small amounts, add powdered protein to your puree and you will be set to go. Good luck and see you on the losers bench.

    Day 4 Post OP

Make sure you are moving and walking, not just sitting around. You still have a lot of air/gas in your system that is trapped causing some of that pain. Moving really does help with that. This weather is now perfect to get out for several short walks today. For those itchy incisions, I used Neosporin and it really helped get rid of the itchiness and helped to heal things up. At 2 1/2 months you can barely even see my incisions. I am hoping they will disappear completely. You will notice a difference every day in how you feel. You will feel stronger and stronger as time goes by. You have had major surgery and you are making tremendous changes in your lifestyle so go easy on yourself. Wishing you well.
  22. give it a little more time. You may be one of those that recovers from surgery more slowly. Your body is hanging on to those massive amounts of fluid they pumped into you while you were in the hospital and of course all your parts are still swollen. The third week you will probably drop a a lot of pounds. Make sure you are moving, drinking water, and eating protein. The weight is going to come off!!! Hope you are feeling better and will be back to your old self soon.
  23. My opinion is that once those people start paying my medical bills and fixing my meals they can be told about my surgery but until that time its none of their da** business so they don't need to know anything. Yes I'm on a diet and if you want to know how I'm losing weight... watch me eat and do what I do. Otherwise stand back and watch the transformation!!!

This is WAY harder than I thought it would be...

Oh my. I guess y'all didn't read the many posts from newly sleeved folks stating that the first week or two was pretty much horrible. Or the part where they didn't lose the weight for 2 weeks and then it started coming off pretty steadily. The first week I was up 8 pounds but it is all inflammation and Water retention. Surgery causes your insides to swell and your body to retain Fluid. It's part of the healing process. It will get easier, you will just have to give it some time.. You will be dropping pounds and pounds any day now . Hope you feel better soon.

    Side sleeper

I slept on my side after the first week. I did have to use a pillow or two to keep me from hurting but it was easy. No problem. I can't sleep on my back.... I have to sleep on my side or my stomach so I've continued to do so. You will find what works for you and make the appropriate adjustments.
