  1. What is the best multivitamin within a reasonable price that a college student could afford? What would you recommend?
  2. Well, I went to my seminar today, and I'm pretty certain that I'm going with the Band, as they also covered bypass and gastric sleeve. So after sitting through the two-hour seminar, I was given a packet of information on how to get your first appointments made and other things for insurance purposes, and I decided I'd get the band because it has the shortest recovery time. I'm a college student, so I can't just take sick days. I'd probably end up being driven to classes on the Gator that Disability Services has, as I don't think that most people could walk a mile and a half round-trip 2-3 times a day right after having major surgery. The changes you have to make are going to be really, really hard, but it has to happen. Doing nothing is not an option anymore. Back in the day, yeah I was obese, but I thought from my own experience that weight was just a number. I did weigh 250, 260, 270 and my weight had never slowed me down. I was still running up the stairs, had pretty good speed for a guy my size, and I fit comfortably in a coach seat when I'd go on vacation. Then all of a sudden I was 300 and counting, and at last count, I was 316. All this weight is doing is shortening my life, and that's not a pretty way to put it, but that's just how it is. And when I look at myself in the shower, I think, "How did this happen?" To quote Richard Simmons, "If you don't like what you see in the mirror, change it!" And this is how it has to happen.
  3. November 9 just can't come soon enough
  4. Hi, I guess I'm afraid of the unknown here. I'm going to the seminar next weekend, and from there going to start the process. I know it needs to be done, but seriously, even though it's laproscopic, I'm still scared s***less about having surgery. I haven't gone under the knife since I was a young boy, and I'm already nervous, even though the surgery is going to be several months out.
  5. I'm pretty scared of it myself. I haven't gone under the knife since I was 7 years old, and I'm not looking forward to only having protein shakes and walking to classes right after having surgery, but it has to get done, and I've got a ton of time to prepare.

    How to start the process?

I called my insurance company some time ago and they said that if I had gotten the ball going back in September, I could have had it done by December. For some reason it took my mom a year to get the Lap Band pre-op process done back in 2010-2011. The local hospital has a seminar on November 9, so I'm headed up there for that. I've got it on my calendar.

    How to start the process?

My mom lives on the other side of the state. I can't afford/don't have time to drive 160 miles one way to see him, and I really don't care who does the surgery as long as I get the surgery done. I'm a college student, so my transportation options are a bit limited. The hospital that's 15 minutes from me has a bariatric department, but all it talks about is gastric bypass, something I'd rather not do. I did see a couple personal websites of surgeons that do Lap Band that say they practice at that hospital, but the hospital's website says nothing about it.
  8. Hi everybody, I'm 18 and a college student and I've made the decision that I'm going to have the lap-band, and my mom, stop the presses, is actually willing to go along with it. I've been overweight my whole life, but it's only gotten this bad recently. I was 230 pounds and an adult medium shirt size when I started high school, and 3XL and 300 pounds when I graduated this past May. I currently weigh 316 and diet and exercise just isn't working. When I started dieting and biking 5 miles a day, I went from gaining 5 pounds a week to only gaining 2 pounds a week. My mom, who is a lap-bander herself, said to go to my doctor and start the yearlong process, and if I qualify, then we'll go from there. What's the process and can it be done with a general MD?
