I think the one thing I didn't do that I wish I did was take my measurements. There will be times when you are not losing weight, but you will be losing inches. It is nice to compare measurements at those times. I only ate 2 things I wasn't supposed to before surgery...cheeseburger and taco. Why eat all those things that you are not supposed to have and will only add to the pounds you will be trying so hard to lose. Get rid of any food not on your approved list. Gave mine to my daughter. So glad because you don't want to see food you are unable to eat. Make sure you have your Vitamins and Protein before surgery. I even added Protein shakes for one meal. I totally agree with winning by losing, build muscle mass now. Get in the exercise mode. Walking helped so much after surgery.

Plateaus happen for no reason at all. Don't get discouraged. I found that when at a plateau, I was actually losing inches. Take your measurements to help you see how good you are doing. Just keep eating and drinking like you were told and you will soon start losing. We all lost fast at first, but it will slow down as you go.

Yes, very normal. I know some people who are a year out who have popcorn. What amazes me is when I am at a potluck with friends, I can't believe how much food is on their plates. Did I eat like that too? It definitely gets better. Be happy with your weight loss and marvel at your experience. Later you may not be losing as fast as you are now and you will wish for those days back.

I totally agree with the comment about the scale. Once a week is often enough. You don't want to get discouraged for no reason at all. Inches are great.

You will never have an average weight loss every week. Like said above, it may be 1 lb, 3 lbs, or none. I remember in the beginning that I had a stall for almost 3 weeks. I wasnt getting enough calories and I think my body thought I was in starvation mode. The important thing is get your Protein in, Water and follow Drs instructions. It will come off. Sometimes you are losing inches instead of weight. Take your measurements to follow that too. Enjoy the ride. I am starting to run out of clothes. Lol

I had bypass to get me off my medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholestrol, reflux, migraines, and arthritis. I am not off all medications (8). -
After surgery question about eating
Judyr replied to itsmekarenlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It takes a while in the beginning. My granddaughter said she was told to chew 30 times before swallowing. I worry that sometimes I eat too fast. I think I take about 20-30 min per meal if I am alone. Longer with friends. -
what foods YOU cannot eat anymore?
Judyr replied to itsmekarenlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Since surgery almost 6 months ago, I love salmon and tuna. My go to foods. I am still not eating bread, pasta, and rice. Of course, diet soda is a big no no. Have to be careful of high fiber vegetables, hard to digest. Love Atkins bars, but can't eat just one, it is off my list for now. Crackers have become a bread substitute. Love real mayonnaise, but have decided that canola mayonnaise is not bad. -
After surgery question about eating
Judyr replied to itsmekarenlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It really does get easier. You should always try to eat 3 times a day, with Water inbetween. If you eat less often, you can get very hungry and that is when you might experience problems....eating too fast and not knowing when you are full. Just follow your Drs instructions. -
Will surgery after certain age make you look haggard?
Judyr replied to Nancy E.'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Im going to be 70 in July. This is the best thing that every happened to me. I am off 8 medications. I can tie my shoes, sit in the recliner with my feet in the chair. Not big on exercise because of bad back. My skin is loose right now, but it has only been 5 1/2 months and I have high hope for some toning. Even if not, this is fantastic. I weigh less than what my drivers license says (lol). I am running out of clothes from my skinny days (30+ years ago). Someone said to me the other day, "what hapened to the other half of you." This is so wonderful. Be positive and know you can do it. Be positive about your Protein shakes because they will be with you the rest of your life. The rewards are beyond imagination. I am healthy!!! -
After having my bypass surgery, I was taken off my diabetes meds at my second week. I am now off 8 medications. I no longer take any medication for diabetes, blood pressure, reflux, migraines, arthritis and cholesterol. This was the best thing to ever happen to me. Wish I had done it 10 years ago.

I think you may need to watch bread products, think pasta, because they expand in your stomach. Overheating, definitely.

Has anyone told you that this surgery is too drastic?
Judyr replied to mommyjamie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You chose to make a healthy decision that affects you for the rest of your life. It improves blood pressure and can cure diabetes. I am off 7 medications because I made the decision to have surgery. Wish I had done it years ago. Most of my friends have been very encouraging now. A couple sceptic at first, but have since come around. -
I am 3 months post op and because I am drinking 2-3 protein shakes a day to get my protein count up, I am taking in 1000-1100 calories a day. I think this is too much. My original paperwork said I should be getting 92 grams of protein a day. So many people have different amounts, so curious.

I still drink my protein shakes, especially in the morning. I don't eat enough to get in 100 grams from food. What do you eat? -
I had a friend who I thought we were close. I told her about my decision to have WLS so she wouldn't be hurt when I had it. After surgery it was 2 wks before she called to see how I was. She has called about 2 times in 4 months. I see her every once in a while and feel she thinks I took the easy way out by having surgery. That if I ate 1200 cal every day I wouldn't need the surgery. She has gotten very large and I feel it is jealousy that is talking. She has always been extremely opinionated and very hard to be around, especially now. Our friendship of before is no longer and I just try to ignore her comments. Everyone else has been wonderful and very complementary. One even surprised me who I thought would give me a bad time, but did not.

In the beginning I was not eating that many calories. It has only been within the last month or two. -
I was going to suggest the applesauce too, but please check with your Dr. I had a hiatal hernia, but it was repaired at time of my surgery and now no more reflux and no pills.

I use Gas X. Helps.
