According to my post op plan, I have clear liquids for 2 days, full liquids for 10 days, puree for 7 days then mushy for 7 days then soft for 7 days then FOOD. The difference between puree and mushy is the difference between baby food and toddler food in the jars at the grocery store. Soft food is something you can eat with a toothache, such as pasta, quiche, shephards pie.

Pre banding I always took metformin on an empty stomoch, right before bed. I also take aspirin and lipitor. I kept forgetting to take my meds, so I asked my GP if I could take them all at once right before bed. He said SURE. I havent taken any meds since being banded last week. My numbers have been around 5.2-6.2

Hi there I was banded last wednesday Aug 15, like others here, the Doc found a hiatal hernia, and repaired it at the same time as he did the band. He told me at the consult that it may happen, as hiatal hernias are very common in the obese. My advice, get a second opinion.

Hi Sweet :hungry: Glad you are doing well, I am on full liquids and I am fantasizing about pureed, and soft food. However all the soft food's I think of start with Mashed Potatoes. Probably not the best choice for weight loss. LOL.

Hello Everyone. First of all I want to say thanks for all your support and encouragement over the last few weeks as I've been awaiting surgery. I am to be banded tomorrow at 1;20 by doctor C. I am feeling extremely cranky, which I am thinking may be misplaced anxiety. I am freaking out a little that I can have nothing by mouth from midnight until after the surgery tomorrow, NOTHING not even Water. Help, how do I get through the next bunch of hours without too much crankiness. I am so cranky I am even annoying myself!! :girl_hug:

Well I lived through the preop diet, and I will be banded in a few hours. I was prescribed optifast for 14 days. What I did was start the optifast 5 days early, and had one optifast meal, and 2 regular meals for 2 days, then on day 3 and 4 I had 2 optifast meals and one regular meal. This was my way of easing in to the world of liquid diets. The first three optifast only days were Hell, but it got easier after that.

If the daughter had cancer, would anyone be saying that the daughter is not mature enough to handle to effects of chemo and radiation, or the effects of surgery on a brain tumour, and understand what is happening to her body. Is obesity any less deadly than cancer?

thanks Cindy, I am sipping on iced green tea, this time tomorrow I will be banded Yippee.

I don't want to diet before banding or pre-op diet. Is this normal?
Michee replied to hopefull loser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date is August 15th. I have done over 2 weeks of optifast, with a "real" meal every second day (meal means steak and vegetables on the grill, not crap). The fear of the optifast is worst than the optifast itself. THe bonus is no grocery shopping and very few dishes. -
Hi Hilarious Years ago when I was thin, I loved jogging, and thought I would start again. I started walking at least 30 minutes per day last summer, so i'm ready for a new challenge. I am 5'3 and weigh 214 pounds. I will be banded on August 15th. I asked my doc (who is also a marathon runner) and he suggested that at this weight jogging would not be good for my joints especially my knees. He suggested that I go to a gym and use the elliptical or cross trainer until I've lost at least 60 pounds before I can start jogging safely. I joined a gym tonight, I got a one year membership. This time next year (god willing) I will cancel it, in favour of jogging. I strongly suggest that you talk to your doc about this issue. Everyone is different, and you need to know what is right for you

Congratulations. I am so happy for you. I will be in Dr C's lounge next wednesday (aug 15). I am looking forward to the demerol and codeine. I know you will be successful with your new tool. Happy recovery

Apetite Supressants for those tough pre-op and post-op diets?
Michee replied to JudiM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Everyone I'm doing a preop diet right now (optifast). It is difficult for me. I know that not all docs require a pre op diet, and those that do, the preop diet is very different. I have been "cheating" on my diet with healthy foods. Tonight instead of an optifast I had lettuce, tuna, and a peach for dinner. Seems funny that it is cheating. I wonder what the benefits are of taking diet pills VS cheating a little on the severe pre ops? Are there any banded docs or nutritionists out there that can help? -
Hi Beau I will be banded on August 15th, so I cant speak to anything post-op. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, so I need to be careful with alcohol for that reason. I was up at the cottage this weekend (just got home) and I found a special treat at the liquour store. Smirnoff ice has a product called smirnoff ultra 1. It has 5%alcohol and only 100 calories per bottle. The bottle is almost identical to the regular so you really have to look for it at the liquor store. It was very yummy, and it only has 1g of carbs, so the effect on my blood sugar was very minimal.

I feel thinner, despite my cheating on optifast. Yesterday I was going to have a complete optifast day....I had breakfast and lunch optifast, but I felt like my insides were freezing, despite it being a heat wave, and the whole GTA is under a heat advisory. When I got home, I had to give my puppy her medicine, she got a form of kennel cough at the groomers last week. She's a pretty good pill taker, but she needs 3and a half pills at a time, I felt sorry for her, especially those half pills cos I bet it tastes nasty. A few days ago I bbq'd some of these nice beef and bluecheese burgers for her, so I would have something to hide the pills in and it would be a nice treat for the poooper doglet. Well after cutting a few chunks of burger for her pills, I proceeded to eat one of those burgers. She gave me the strangest look. Like...Hey what's going on, I thought that was my plate of burgers in the fridge. Well I ate the whole burger. Why did I teach that dog not to jump up and grab food out of my hand/plate. Perhaps if I would have let her steal my food from the beginning, I would not need to pay 16 thousand for the lapband. LOL. Seeing my GP this afternoon, very excited. I'm getting my preop done so one step closer to surgery. WOOOOHOOO. I hope that my healthier eating habits have paid off in my cholesterol results. I dont think my blood sugars have improved, mostly due to my leaky liver. I bought a scale at JYSK which is still in the trunk. I will get weighed at Docs office today and then calibrate scale, I'm gonna put it in the laundry room so I'm not tempted to jump on it every 5 minutes. I really need to get ready for the cottage, as I am heading up north right after docs appt and still have about a bizillion things to do.

Have fun at the Mall, I guess you are going to Square One. Try not to buy too many clothes, you will be losing weight, and will be changing sizes very quickly. I am trying to psyche myself up that I can only buy two pairs of pants in each size until I'm at goal. After all I am spending 16K on the surgery, i will need that clothing money to pay back my line of credit LOL. Glad you are feeling up to an outing.

Congrats, glad you are feeling well. I am going to drop off check to Dr C today for my surgery on Aug 15th. Is your hotel near his office? Do you need anything, juice, broth etc. I would happy to drop off anything you need at your hotel.

New to site - Will be banded Aug. 1
Michee replied to stever1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
HI Steve Today is your big day, that will be the start of a small you!! Congratulations on your decision, and for surviving the preop diet (which may in fact be the death of me before my August 15 date) Will be thinking about you today!! -

Hi Jenny

I'm in Ontario Canada, and lapband is not covered by insurance here. I paid 16 thousand, plus 300 for Optifast (however the optifast replaced groceries, so it was actually cheaper).

You may want to do some research and find out if there are any clinical trials in your area, that way you may get the surgery free if you are willing to jump through hoops. There is a clinical trial in my area, but I didnt have enough co morbidities to qualify, plus there was a big commitment, like 8 preop appointments, and 8 post op appointments.

The really nice thing about self pay, is there is practically no weight. I first called the clinic on July 21, met with the doc on July 24th, and I'm booked for surgery on August 15th.

The funny thing is that if I had found a new BMW for 16 thousand, I would have not hesitated, and would have purchased it in a nano second.

Yesterday I went to the bank, and took 15,300 out of my line of credit (had to pay the deposit at first consult). Dropping of bank draft to the clinic today.

The best of luck on your journey

I first met with Doc on July 20th. Even before that, I knew that I was going to keep the lapband thing a secret from as many people as possible. Yet ironically I am journalling on the world wide web. Although the procedure is outpatient, the clinic has strict rules that you cannot drive yourself ortake a cab home. You must travel home with an adult that you know and trust, and someone must agree to stay with you for 24 hours. The clinic needs to know the name and phone number of the person. THe clinic verifies that they have agreed to monitor you for 24 hours. Okay, so now to I have to tell someone. Someone with a car, a drivers license, and the ability to leave work early to pick me up, and the ability to leave their near and dear home alone for 24 hours. Sounds easy enough. Well LW is getting married soon, and will flip out that I am having surgery so close to the wedding since I am MOH. Rule out LW Then there is JLY, she recently started a new job, cant take time off work so soon after starting. Rule out JLY NS is having outpatient surgery of her own the day before mine, and will not be able to drive. Rule out NS WLS is unable to drive temporarily due to a medical condition. Rule out WLS Aha I have it.... P & D - they are a fantastic couple whom I have been friends with for 7 years, not as long as most of my other friends, but who are like family to me. (in a good way lol). I invite them to a BBQ at my house, and tell them about the surgery. There reaction was really funny. First of all P guessed that I was having weight loss surgery as soon as I said " I have something to tell you". Then she misheard the price, and thought I said sixteen HUNDRED dollars instead of sixteen THOUSAND dollars. "I wish" I said as I was double over in fits of laughter. D was telling me to try weight watchers and take up cycling. Please been there done that, about 10 years ago I would do at least one long (150 km) bike ride each summer. Well I tried, successfully not to be angry at his attitude. After all he knows about as much about having a weight problem as I know about the plight of the pine bug as it tries to survive in the diminishing forests. They are the bestest. P was very supportive, and although D did not seem to "get it" was supportive just the same. He is going to pick me up at the clinic, and stay over night at my place my first night home. This will include of course taking the pooper dog for a walk and picking up the poopers. This I realize is quiet a gift from a friend who does not share his abode with a furry canine. What a relief... a confession, and the first 24 hours of recovery sorted.
