lifting kids after surgery
Michee replied to Scarlett O'hara's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can check with your doctor about lifting techniques, lots of women have a c-section delivery and then go home to a toddler as well as the newborn. So I imagine there are some Tricks of the trade so to speak At 18 months you could just change his diaper on a change pad on the floor instead of lifting him. -
You may want to call around a few gyms, find one that has a kinesiologist on staff, and get them to design a workout that is not going to aggravate your condition.

I agree with losingjusme. Walking 30-40 minutes is a good start, during the first 6 weeks post op you are still healing, after that you will want to ramp up your exercise.
-
A quick prayer of gratitude for you to repeat Thank you God for a strong healthy body, and the strength of spirit to trust in your will.

you may also want to get yout thyroid checked. I had the same problem and my Doctor of Naturopathy recommended an herbal thyroid stabilizer. (of course there were other symptoms as well)

I love coffee! I gave it up for a combination of Lent and a liver detox thing. Easter sunday was my first cup.......it was really good. Personally I try to stay away from decaf, I have always found that decaf feels like it is rotting my stomach (who knows I could be allergic to it). I dont see the harm in a cup of regular coffee now and then, unless of course you need to avoid it due to a health condition or a particular medication

A few years ago there was a case where 5 kids were removed from a family because the kids were grossly underweight. To me it's the same think, in both cases the parents were not taking responsibility to make sure the children were eating the correct amount of healthy nutritious foods. It is likely that in both families the children are undernourished

I am single and live alone, I only told 2 friends about the surgery, mostly because the clinic insisted that I have someone drive me home, and stay with me the first night. Personally I use these boards for support. After all I am not sure people who have not gone through this experience can offer much support anyway. You will find all the support you need on-line, and I am sure you will find the "seasoned" bandsters who are at goal to be a source of inspiration and motivation.

If you add flaxseed oil to any shake and put it in the blender, it gets rid of the gritty texture, plus flaxseed oil is very good for you

I have lost 47 pounds, I am still in the Obese category according to the BMI, last week the CAO at my company asked me if I was going to the AnaMia websites to learn how to be anorexic, she said she was worried that I would become anorexic. This from a woman who is almost 5"10 and wears a size 6-8. Sheesh!!

Hit a 3 month plateau..need unbiased opinions
Michee replied to skubachick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the same issue, I went to see a Doctor of Naturopathy, based on my medical history and a series of tests, she recommended a 21 liver detox cleanse (an elimination diet and supplements) now that the cleanse is over she recommended i take B12, a herbal thyroid stabilizer, Vitamin D drops, flax seed oil, and Omega 3 oils. I am hoping this will give my metabolism a boost and get me off the plateau. My advice to you is to seek help from a medical professional, a kinesiologist, dietition, or someone else who is educated in this area and knows your medical history. While people try to be helpful with advice on what worked for them, or what worked for their friend etc, I personally wanted a real MEDICAL opinion. Good luck, I know your frustration. -
Wow this is a great thread, I hope all those who are considering getting the band read all the posts with great local info on prices. It really helps when people know all the facts when choosing a band clinic. I paid 16K for my band, which by most standards is a lot of buckaroos, but since my fills are free and the clinic is only a 15 minute drive from my house, perhaps it was money well spent. I think I am at a "sweet spot" for right now, and it took 5 fills.

Help w/ protien powders ??
Michee replied to kitcatnap's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't have to do protien powders. You can use tofu, milk, and fruit to make a shake. If you are drinking milk or eating yogurt and eating fish/lentils/meat, you may be already getting enough protien -
What kind of excerise is everyone doing?
Michee replied to karri68's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I do 20 minutes of Cardio at 6:00 am to get my metabolism going, then I do 30 minutes of weight training, alternating arms one day, legs one day, abs the next day. When I get home from work I walk 3k outdoors. I do the above 7 days per week, although will not be able to do the gym today because it is closed since it is easter sunday -
how long in the hospital?
Michee replied to hope2bhealthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was at 1:15, I was in my friends car heading home by 4:30, and that included a hiatal hernia repair. It was a wednesday. I walked the dog (slowly) on Thursday at 7:00am. On Friday I went to the spa for a mani pedi, on Saturday I was driving. I am single and live alone (with my dog) so I had to "get on with it". I think if I had a spouse who was willing to cater hand and foot i would have milked it for an entire week !! -
I recently gave up coffee as part of a "plateau busting" liver detox program. I avoided the headaches by substituting green tea. Although the green tea contains some caffiene, it was recommended by my Doctor of Naturopathy. After the initial 21 day period I decided to make it my Lent Sacrifice, so Easter sunday will be my first cuppa Java

I am not sure where you live, but here in Ontario Canada the PS charge at least 100 bucks for a consult. For that reason I am waiting until I am ready to have the surgery. In the meantime I am talking to people and doing research on all the docs in my area. Since you are at least a year from surgery, who knows a new technique may be developed by then, or a fab PS may move to your city.

I recently did a 21 day cleanse, that was recommended by my Doctor of Naturopathy. It involved eliminating dairy, eggs, wheat, shellfish, peanuts, soy, sugar, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, caffeine, chicken, pork and beef, tomatoes and corn. The elimination diet is the most important part, the supplements that I was taking while on the cleanse served simply to provide the nutrients that I was not getting through the elimination of certain foods. The idea was to detoxify the liver by eating foods that allowed the liver to "rest". Hope this helps. If you want ideas of what to eat during the cleanse just PM me.

Any good cottage cheese flavorings?
Michee replied to foxboro jim's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree with trying different brands. To me any cottage cheese called "low fat" has a not so nice taste and not so nice texture. As someone already said, the high fat ones are generally very yummy, and since banded I cant eat a lot anyway! -
I think fruit is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth, and it has to be a lot better for you than all those "chemical non-foods" such as sugarfree jello, sugarfree pudding etc etc.

I have done several of the MS rides here in Ontario Canada, the 150's and the 180's. My advice - bike shorts with the chamois like crotch, and learn how to use the gears properly, this will make the uphills a breeze (well not really a breeze, but easier than you think). I have always found the first 20K to be the hardest, then I am in the groove, and the rest is a lot of fun. I always meet tons of great people.

I was really interested in the "colon cleanse" I was attracted by the idea of evacuating large amounts of sludge!! And losing 15 pounds doing it. I went to a Doctor of Naturopathy and she told me that it was all a bunch of bunk. She suggested a 21 day liver detox, as a way to give my metabolism a kick in the butt. It is an elimination diet, no dairy, eggs, sugar, artifical sweeteners, gluten, tomatoes, corn, shellfish, peanute, chicken, beef pork or soy. Today is day 13. So much for looking for a quick fix !!

Love this thread ! It reminds me of a saying from my days in OA - find someone that has what you want, and ask them how they did it. I try to use this motto when seeking tips and hints on this forum. I read the tips from those at goal, or very close to it. I dont want advice from those who are not losing weight. After all I am already quite good at being fat, so no advice needed. I know the above is going to piss some people off. I mean no disrespect, I am just sharing MY personal philosophy.

UHC didn't deny me, IT WAS MY EMPLOYER!!!
Michee replied to 🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺's topic in Insurance & Financing
Hey Sahm of 3 What if you offered to pay the difference to "upgrade" your policy to include WLS. For example if the company is paying $200.00 per month for your current policy, and the 'upgrade" policy costs $255.00, you could propose the you would pay the $55.00 difference. This way you can get you WLS for virtually nothing, and the company does not incur extra expense for you and the other employees. Might be worth a try! Good luck -
Can Nurses Take A Course To Learn How To Do Fills?
Michee replied to juney1968's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My fills are always done by a nurse. I have had 5 fills so far, each one was virtually painless and took less than a minute. At the clinic where I had surgery, it is my understanding that it is always the nurses who do fills.
