I was told that I have to quit smoking by my doctor that it's bad for the band. I'm trying real hard. They re-set my surg date for the 19th I keep trying to get bcbs to pay but because my bmi's not been in the 40 or above for the past 5 years they say no. but I try till they roll me in for surg. I took the Chantix... and it really does help. but I thought after 2 week I had won the battle so I quit taking it so if you start it take it for the full 3 month after you have quit. good luck

Which weight do they use for approval?
vfran replied to CandyE's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

BCBS denied me this week because my BMI wasn't 40. I was 39.8 by my doctors records.

They said I could appeal and have my doctor write them another letter.) On Tuesday I called my doctor's office and told them what BCBS said, they said they would have to wait on the letter. I asked, if I could get a recheck. Now this whole waiting period I've been trying to start eating like I've already had the surgery so I've lost a few pounds I wore my heavy clothes and I was still below 40. I asked them what they had my height down as. I'm alway been told I was 5 ft 2.5 ins. They had me down as 5 ft 3.5 ins. They re-measured by height 2 times to be sure and guess what I am 5 ft 2.5 ins. so this made my BMI 40.8 so back to BCBS we must go. I do so want them to say YES NOW I want the surgery tomorrow.

-

Hello, I know what you mean about it seems far away. I'm waiting on insurance approval. All the paperwork was sent in Monday. I've already do the testing and attend the monthly meetings to keep me going. BMI is 39 height 5 ft 3.5 in. My daughter had lb in May and is great. The insurance approved her after 1 denial. keep me post about yours. -
Thanks for your reply. Looks like you doing great since your band. I so happy for you.

Is there anyone that has had trouble with BCBS of Tennessee? I'm in my 50's and already had 2 surgeries this year. Do you think they would say no because of this.

I know what you mean about being frustrated. I also have BCBS. At first my Doctor wouldn't do anything with the paperwork so I made a appointment with him and asked why he wasn't be supportive. He filled in the date, weight and BP as well as all my DX and I'm to fill in the rest and after he looks at it and signs it I can then send it to BCBS. With all the waiting I told my doctor to go ahead and send the other paperwork ( which is a complete copy of all my office visits with my PCP )in to see it they would approve it without the 6 month doc. -
