Please guys, I need your help ... How big is our new pouch supposed to be?
TurnThePage replied to Mid West's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
This is all very confusing. You asked a question which suggested you were perhaps going to tell the surgeon how to do his job. Now it seems like you had surgery and you think something may be wrong. It looks like half the story is missing. Can you please clarify instead of snapping at someone who is trying to figure out how to help? -
The amount of clothing baggage you'll shed over the coming year won't come close to the emotional baggage you'll be throwing overboard!

Don't you think that is for your surgeon to decide, based on your body size and type, Your health, and his experience and education? There are a lot of things to learn and focus on to make your WLS a success. Why waste time and energy on things you have no control over? -

What a nice surprise!
TurnThePage replied to Cherryhair's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When that train of thought starts to leave the station, consider what those "friends" (your favorite foods) have cost you over the years: -good health -ability to move quickly and easily -chances to play effortlessly with your children -opportunities to do fun things with family and friends -job opportunities and higher wages -the ability to shop at regular stores for a wide selection of pretty clothes -years of great sex and intimacy -ability to travel easily, fit in airplane seats, & have energy to explore the world -lots of fun -and so much more! With "friends" like this, who needs enemies??? This is why we say success with WLS is 20% due to the tool and 80% "head work". It requires you to re-think a lot of your beliefs and assumptions. -

Psst. I'll let you in on a secret. You don't need that Last Supper, because you'll be able to have most foods again---someday, albeit in much smaller quantities. Ironically, you will lose your taste or desire for many of them over time and won't even want them later. Being thin and healthy and being in control of your life feels far, far better than most food tastes! You haven't lost anything by this date change--you just won the weight loss lottery! Congrats! What an exciting way to kick off the New Year! -
buy pill holders at the drug store. Fill with a week's or a month's supply. Keep the pill holder in a very visible place, Put up post-it-note reminders. Take your pills the same time each day. Remember you can get seriously ill if you don't take your Vitamins each day, They are no longer optional!

After surgery bathroom issues
TurnThePage replied to iluvmyArmani's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's unusual then that you would only be urinating once a day. Do you have heart problems that might cause Fluid retention? You might run this by the doctor's staff, just to check. A laxative or stool softeners plus walking as much as you can will help everything get moving. Take good care of yourself. -

You are dehydrated and that is very damaging to your body. You could wind up spending Christmas in the hospital unless you greatly increase your hydration and quickly. Go to a medical website like Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic and read up on dehydration and/or call your doctor's staff and tell them what is going on.. -
Not losing lbs
TurnThePage replied to Monykaperez1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The Week 3 stall is legendary. Just stick with the program and it will pass. You will need clothes during your weight loss or you will look like a clean but homeless person. Many shop at thrift or consignment stores or hit the sales for low price, interim options. -
Depression & Anti-Depressants
TurnThePage replied to Batcap's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
One thing you will find as you read this forum and others like it is that it's 99.9% certain that you are not the only one who has dealt with any particular issue! There's always someone who has walked that path before you. -
Are my other problems going to go away?
TurnThePage replied to pugpug's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your surgeon and cardiologist are the ones best qualified to tell you what to expect with your specific medical history. A heart attack damages the heart muscle, so losing weight seems unlikely repair the tissue damage or clear out the clogged arteries. However, people generally experience improved health with the weight loss and by making better food choices going forward. Three weeks after RNY at 60, my cardiologist reduced the dose of one of my meds for congestive heart failure by half and said I might be taken off that med entirely at one year. I don't eat fatty foods or junk food anymore so my cholesterol should be coming down. Most importantly, the weight loss reduces the stress on the heart muscle and joints and that is a huge contributor to quality of life. Best wishes. -
Depression & Anti-Depressants
TurnThePage replied to Batcap's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Don't worry about it. Many of us battle depression and continue to take anti-depressants before, during and after surgery. The psych appointment is just to check that you understand the surgery and all of the implications of the post-op lifestyle changes, assess your level of commitment as it impacts your potential success, determine if you have an appropriate support system in place or have the coping tools to manage on your own and things like that. They are trying to ensure your success, not screen you out since they get paid for surgery and the accompanying program. Some meds may need to be changed depending on the type of surgery you have. Are you really considering lap band? Many surgeons no longer perform lap band surgery due to the rate of complications and the high failure rate. They are not permanent, you know that, right? Many lap band patients are revised with sleeve surgery or RNY. You might read about their experiences on this forum and others like it before you make a final decision. Good luck! -
They are called food funerals, saying good bye to old friends. The irony is that eventually you will be able to have many of them again, but won't be interested in them. Your tastes change after surgery and you also often find you are no longer tempted by old favorites because you've made up your mind you want thin even more.
-
If you are sure you can avoid tasting temptations while baking, but want the fun of it, bake Cookies and take them to seniors or people that live alone or play Secret Santa for neighbors.

Need lunch ideas on a budget
TurnThePage replied to music1618's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not exactly gourmet dining, but I will often wrap deli turkey or thing beef slices around a cheese stick for a quick lunch or put that between pieces of lettuce with a little mayo in the middle. -
Ins Approved But Hasn't Sent Auth To Surgeon
TurnThePage replied to Tammy wright's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There is always a huge backlog at the end of the year. My doctor's office is absolutely swamped right now, both with pending cases and new people wanting to get into the program. Hard to do, but be patient. Wishing you all the best! -
Help! Surgery is in 4 days and hubby is sick!
TurnThePage replied to tigermom12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The call your surgeon's office, tell them what is going on and ask for their advice. If antibiotics are needed they can prescribe them, but taking any meds in the 2 weeks before surgery can be problematic so we sure to do this with your surgeon and not through your PCP. -
Surgery yesterday - scared
TurnThePage replied to Stacy_wls's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Try to relax and let the professionals take care of you. They know more about your specific situation and appropriate care than anyone on an internet forum. Best wishes! -

TurnThePage replied to tigermom12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't say what is wrong with him. Colds and flu are caused by viruses and antibiotics do not affect them. Besides you were probably exposed to the virus at the same time he was, so what will be, will be. Tamaflu can minimize flu symptoms if taken as soon as the symptoms show up. Not all illnesses block surgery--your doctor will decide based on your condition. Good luck. -
I am on loser side now
TurnThePage replied to Bobby Smith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats~ Glad you are doing okay. Walk as much as you can; it will help the soreness by reducing the gas in your mid-section. If you need pain medication, take it, as pain can actually slow healing. Wishing you all the best! -
Got a few years on both of you and there are many older than me on the boards. It is never to late to change and work towards good health. I think it is even more important as we age, in order to keep our mobility and agility. The worst thing anyone can do is sit back and do nothing. Good luck!
