Consider replacing the candy bowl with a fruit bowl or other healthy Snacks or non-food treats for the kids. Preferably something you are not fond of as well. My mom and dad (both obese) always kept a candy drawer in the kitchen because they liked candy. Unfortunately, from it I developed a candy-every-day habit which led me to a life of obesity, unhappiness and frustration, and finally this RNY. You can be the good aunt by thinking creatively about both happy surprises at your house AND their long term health. Get them involved in games, projects and play that gives them exercise. What they will always remember most about you is that it was fun to spend time with you and all the love you gave them--not the candy dish.

Call your surgeon's office in the morning. You may have a stricture or other problem that needs to be fixed. -

Hello from Peachtree City, GA
TurnThePage replied to kespy74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Initially I wanted the lap band and then worked my way to the sleeve as I learned more about the procedures. Finally I decided that if I'm going to have WLS, I'm going for the gold--the gold standard of bypass, that is. I am very happy now that I chose RNY, especially when I read all the posts from people having a do-over from band or sleeve to bypass. Might as well do this once and get it right the first time! My surgery and recovery to date have been very smooth sailing! Good luck! -
Follow up becuase i wasnt feeling good

Unless the pills are very large, you might be able to take them whole. I was given whole pills in the hospital. I'm 3 1/2 weeks out and can take my prescription pills one at a time. I follow with a bit of slightly warm water and wait 10-15 minutes for the next one. I originally took the one larger pill by breaking in half and coating the opened end with a tiny bit of butter to sort of seal it. -
I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

On the sunny side of 60, 4 weeks out from surgery and really, really looking forward to being a feisty old lady like my great grandmother and great aunt who lived to 96! -
I've been drinking 4 oz. regular apple juice (Treetop 3 apple blend) first thing in the morning since I got home from the hospital without problems. Of course the taste would be bland if diluted 50/50. The crisp taste gets me going, a substitute for my old coffee habit. I just don't drink a lot of it due to the calories. I find it helpful to brush my teeth a couple of times during the day to refresh my palate. The slow eating of small amounts of food makes my mouth feel yucky and probably isn't doing my teeth a lot of good, so brushing helps.

YAY FOR YOU!!!!

I was hardly shouting out negative remarks, just making an observation and trying to offer helpful suggestions. That you chose to take it negatively is a reflection of your interpretation, not of my writing. Different doctors have different food protocols, but yours seemed very different from virtually all those that I have read on several bariatric center websites and forums. Most of the food plans seem to emphasize Protein from the beginning (protein is what helps your body rebuild tissue and strength, especially after surgery) and shun carbs like bread, Pasta, Cookies, pretzels--foods that helped many of us put on the pounds in the first place. That's why I suggested you check your food plan--it seemed unusual and I thought that perhaps like some people you weren't following a plan. In any case, congratulations on your success to date and best wishes for the future.

There are a bunch of recipes at the unjury.com website.

I'm surprised you are eating even half of that stuff---especially at 6 weeks out. My program says no Pasta or salads or bread for 6 months. No fiberous veggies like broccoli for quite some time. Carbs (sugar free or not) like bread, Cookies, chips, candies are all high calorie and are to be minimized for as long as I want to keep my weight down. I have 1% milk in my sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast without problems. It seems like you might be setting yourself up for future failure. Perhaps you should review your eating plan with your nutritionist to be sure you're on the right track. Best wishes....

Help after Surgery ?
TurnThePage replied to RDCLambert's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A friend drove me home from the hospital, but after that I was on my own and have had no problems whatsoever caring for myself. Mostly slept the first couple of days. I'm 60 and have had no complications or issues with the surgery or recovery. No pain meds since the day after surgery. I had prepared my foods, drinks and creature comforts before going to the hospital. Started working again in my home office 1 week after surgery. -
For a change from the sweet flavors and cold drinks, add unflavored protein to chicken or beef broth. The savory flavor is a good change. Unjury has a protein chicken soup mix that's pretty good. I prefer the Unjury protein drinks.

Try adding unflavored Protein to chicken or beef broth to make warm drinks. The savory flavor is a welcome change from sweet protein shakes. unjury sells a very good chicken Soup protein mix. Attending the weekly support groups offered by your surgeon's office will help you with weekly tips and the emotional support you need. Short term therapy with someone specializing in weight loss issues might also be helpful. Exercise gives you more energy and helps fight depression. Autumn is a beautiful season to get out and walk. You just have to drag yourself out the first few times, even if you feel tired, to discover how much better you will feel. Good luck.

Not losing and frustrated
TurnThePage replied to Christie Frazer-Fernandes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Increasing your Protein may get things moving again. My doctor says a minimum of 50g per day and ideally 80-100g for me at 5'6". Some times you have to eat more to lose more--it convinces your body you are not starving and it doesn't need to hoard pounds. Try making your Protein shakes icy cold and serve in an insulated mug to increase palatability. Make your morning drink the night before and keep in the fridge to get it really cold. Protein drinks made with savory flavors like chicken or beef broth are a great alternative to all the sweet flavors. unjury makes a good chicken Soup powder and a couple of cups a day will really boost your protein levels. To make your own, add a scoop of unflavored protein to chicken or beef broth (temp must be below 140 or protein will clump). I like the Carnation No-Sugar Breakfast Essentials mixed with milk in the morning. Be sure you get the blue boxed non-sugar variety. Their website lists stores that carry it--many stores only have the one with sugar. Again, much better if icy cold. Crank the fridge up a notch! Good luck!
