    Proceed With Caution

Cheryll, thank you for sharing your story! I have had a few issues, but nothing as drastic as yours, and I agree, I would do it all over again! I wish you all the best in your journey and look forward to hearing about your progress! Sue
  2. I had my surgery on the 9th and so far so good! Have had no issues with food so far. Am still on pureed. Can have eggs, soft fish yogurt etc. Trying to get enough protein is a bit hard, but feeling better each day. Am bored too, but don't think I could tolerate a whole work day yet. I go back next week. Have lost 22.5 lbs so far including Pre op diet. Am excited to get on with it! Sue
  3. I agree, it is interesting the different diets we are all on. Supposedly, at 4 weeks I should be on a regular rny diet. Had fish yesterday with no issues. Am looking forward to continue hearing how everybody is doing throughout this experience! Sue
  4. I am 9 days post op and am just now feeling good. Am on full Liquids for another week and then off to soft foods. I am so happy it is over but really am looking forward to eating again! I am actually craving cottage cheese! I think I am just tired of sweet protein drinks! Anyways, looking forward to this journey Sue :-)
  5. I have just read all the posts on this thread and it sounds like people have had issues with the sleeve that, if all goes well, will resolve with rny. For myself, I had the band for 3 years with minimal success. The band started to fail after the first year and a half and never was able to tolerate it. I ended up with a dilated esophagus. My surgeon told me that the sleeve is high pressure and my esophagus issues would not get better. He suggested rny because it is not high pressure. I still wanted the sleeve but my insurance Co. would not pay for the sleeve. I agreed to rny and, even though I am only 3 weeks out I can tell that eating, swallowing and reflux is so much better! I know that I am in the beginning stages, had some issues with pain and fluid in my lungs, but surgery wise I am glad I did rny. I think dumping is my main fear at this time because there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what I can tolerate. I don't go any more often than before but when I have to go I get nauseous and have to go now! Hopefully, my body will adapt and this will resolve. Anyways, I hope that helps? I am so sorry, though, to hear about the complications some of you are experiencing. Prayers that they will resolve and we can all begin to experience all the positives of rny life! Sue
  6. So sorry you have gone through all of this! Prayers that you are now finally on the road to recovery. Hugs. Sue
  7. I was having a lot of pain at 10 days out. Could not take deep breaths and severe pain in upper abdomen. Went to the ER. They ruled out a PE and any leaks. Surgery wise everything looked good but had some fluid in lungs and inflammation of the lining of my lungs. I am definitely walking more and using my IS and pain is somewhat better. I think the fluid in my lungs is better but still very painful to breathe deep and can't lay on side because of pain. I researched a bit and assuming what I have is a bilateral pleural effusion. I am supposed to make an appt for one more week with my surgeon but am concerned the effusion won't get better without intervention. It is still extremely painful. Anybody else have this? I can't find anywhere that this is normal and I am still painful. It has been 3 days since my trip to the ER. Thanks, Sue
  8. That's what I thought. Will talk to my surgeon and hopefully get a referral. Was hoping it would resolve on its own. Thanks, Sue
  9. I had band to rny done on 9/9. Other than some pain issues recovery is going well. Am finally feeling like eating a little! I get soft foods starting tomorrow (cottage cheese, eggs etc). Now is where I am going to have to practice portion control. It will seem strange to have a couple ounces of something and then stop! The problems I had with the band was with my esophagus. Food would sit there and not go down very easily. I lost about 70 lbs the 1st year and then slowly gained about 45 lbs over two years. With all of the adding fluid and taking fluid out I think the band just got really irritated, and I couldn't eat anything of substance! I drank a lot of protein drinks and soups. Anyways, very grateful I got this chance and am excited to move forward! Sue
  10. Sleevedtorny : I am so sorry you are going back to surgery! Hopefully this will fix whatever is wrong. Prayers for a safe and uneventful recovery! Keep us posted.

    September Post Ops

Amanda, I don't know that it matters if it is a bed or recliner. Sleeping is not fun or relaxing! I finally gave up and just went to bed. I do start the night on my back with 3 pillows, and eventually just try to find some position that's not too uncomfortable. I keep reminding myself that it will get better!

    Pain levels

RickySpanish : You know, ibuprofen wasn't in his post op orders but when I talked to him on the phone he said it was fine. Then yesterday, when I was talking to one of his partners she told me not to use NSAIDS for the reasons you stated. I had wondered why it wasn't used when it is so good with decreasing inflammation. Anyways, needless to say, I have stopped taking ibuprofen! Pain is somewhat better today and just using Tylenol when needed and Lortab at night. Thanks :-)

    Pain levels

Oldoneyoungagain it sounds like you have had a better time of it than I did. I am probably a pain wimp though! Grateful I don't have to go back to work for a while yet! I did end up with some fluid in my lungs and that is what the pain is from now. Of course, started using the incentive spiromoter again and walking more. Now that I know it's not the actual surgery site that hurts I am more willing to push myself. So when they say walk, walk, walk that means walk, walk, walk! Obviously I wasn't walking enough. Well, onto a speedy recovery for all!

    September Post Ops

My surgery was September 9th Monday. In some ways I am doing better than I expected but I can't believe how much the pain has bothered me and how tired I am. Though each day I feel so much better than the day before! Sue
  15. I just have steri strips and some internal stitches that will dissolve. I am almost 2 weeks post op and am supposed to remove the strips at 2 weeks. I think each surgeon uses what works best for them as well as what each patients needs.

    Pain levels

I am 10 days post op and still taking pain meds. I tried to cut down on ibuprofen and after 24 hours was extremely painful across my upper abdomen, right below my ribs. I keep thinking my pain is more extreme than I expected but, with the liquid vicodin a couple times a day and ibuprofen every 6 to 12 hours, I feel somewhat better each day. I can't imagine going back to work soon though! Am thankful I took 4 weeks off!
  17. Sorry, didn't copy your name and somehow my phone made some weird auto corrects! Sue
  18. Oldandyoung I agree with you! I have read books and blogs and, of course, my own post op instructions. There is such a large variance! I think my surgeon is on the conservative side, yet I am supposed to be on a 'normal' diet at 4 weeks. Can't imagine! I only have 3 more days before cottage cheese and soft boiled eggs. Am looking forward to something different. Even if only a few bites.

    Tasteless Protein :)

I wish I had seen this thread sooner! I have searched the Internet looking for unflavored, easy to mix protein powder. Surgery was last week and I just can't stomach another vanilla or chocolate or strawberry protein drink! I can't remember the name but finally ordered something from Amazon that got good reviews. Will let you know how it is. Anyways, love this site :-) Sue

    pain in left upper abdomen

I talked to the nurse and the pain is somewhat better. She thought it was probably localized swelling and I could come in and have her look at it but decided to wait. I think I just feel better having talked to someone! Thanks for the input though! Am new to all this and have enjoyed reading the threads on here :-)

    pain in left upper abdomen

Thanks, I actually called this morning and am waiting for a call back. It's probably swelling but will feel better if he tells me that, and it's nothing to worry about. Thanks though!
