I find it humorous that you assume I have no knowledge of the food industry. I most certainly do and I have almost a decade worth of knowledge of how RNY works and what you need to eat to lose weight and maintain weight loss. The reason there is little support of this "garden of life" vegan stuff is because you will not be able to get in enough protein, good fats and starches with a vegan diet as a post op bariatric patient. I'm not saying that "normal" (people w/o RNY) can be healthy following a vegan or vegetarian diet but those people don't have the malabsorption

I would not worry about having depression and or Bipolar disorder. I have both and generalized anxiety and panic attacks. I was diagnosed at age 12 so I have been in meds for 20 years and in counseling. If you are taking your medication and participating in regular therapy you should be ok. In my case my own psychiatrist did my eval not one ordered by the surgeon. If you are not in therapy and the eval suggests it would be necessary and you don't comply then you could be denied.

I don't know what kind of surgeon your going to too but it is extremely offensive to say that nutritionists are lazy college students. Maybe your nut is but what you said is ridiculous. An endocrinologist does not have the same education or special interest as a dietician and nutritionist. You are being rather righteous and you are not a Bariatric surgeon or even a doctor. If you think you know everything then maybe you should go to medical school. You haven't even had surgery so please don't try to talk about our protein intake or success. You haven't even started your protein brand. You sound like an extremist and an alarmist that will believe anything you hear! If you think your way is the end all be all then why are you having surgery? This is a supportive site but you will not find your opinion and your judgemental attitude very appreciated. Let me know when your 9 years post op and have actually lived post op life. Good luck on your high horse.

New TONS of questions Surgery Nov/Dec
pear425 replied to elizabet33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The short answer is that everyone is different and no one person will have the same result or the same answer to give you. The best and the safest answers come from your Bariatric surgery and nut. Even though you do have an illness if this is moving to fast you might want to consider postponing until you have your answers and feel 100% comfortable. This is just as much mental and emotional as it is physical. -
Definitely go see a professional bra fitter because most everyone is wearing the wrong size. The right fit will make you look and feel better.

If your next appt isn't until 10/31 you have two weeks.

Wine has lots of sugar alcohol so it can certainly cause you to dump.

December Surgeries!?!?!?
pear425 replied to preopmano's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A vit D deficiency can be very serious. There are several negative effects of having low levels (especially over a long period of time) that are irreversible. Definitely look into it and talk to your nut about it. Don't forget that you must take bariatric vitamins for the rest of your life. I have a severe Vit D deficiency that is being treated with high dose supplements for at least 6 months. I stopped taking my vitamins over a year ago and I quickly became deficient. I'm post op 9 years but I'm now having a revision due to weight gain and some other issues. -

There are lots of people here that are having or had a band to bypass revision. There is actually a forum on here just for those patients. -
Any October surgeries out there...
pear425 replied to debbiedenise's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My initial surgery was in January 2005. I lost 97 lbs and was happy (152 lbs). In January 2009 after I was finished with an extremely horrible divorce I fell into a huge depression. Long story short w/in 3 years I gained about 70 lbs back. This past January I decided to look into a revision specialist to see what my options were. I hesitated for awhile thinking he couldn't or wouldn't do anything. Finally in August I met with the doc and now I'm having my revision and a couple other procedures that need to be fixed after the doc did an EGD. Basically I'm treated like it's my first RNY. I had to meet all the insurance requirements and such. -

I just got the date for my revision. Halloween! I will be having my RNY revised, a small bowel obstruction removed and adhesions removed. Really excited but scared. I don't know why since I did this almost 9 years ago the first time. -
Full liquids should include any soup that does not have "chunks" or pieces of meat or veggie in it. Something like a bisque.

Ever feel like you'll never get there?
pear425 replied to GG'sArtsMom's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry I re-read your most and what you said. It can be scary to think we went through this surgery and that we won't achieve our goal weight. You may or may not to be honest but if your health has improved it is not just about the number on the scale or the size on the label. Keep your head and stay positive. You will do great. -

Please don't worry. You aren't even six months out from surgery. You will lose more weight. Everyone loses at a different pace and stalls are common. Just keep following your doctor and nut instructions and you will be just fine. -
I have lots I would like to share with you and would love to talk privately if you would like. The basic things I can say is that this surgery is not just physical it is very emotional and mental. You are young and have so many experiences yet to come. I was 24 when I had the surgery and everything went amazing. I lost 97lbs (started at 249lbs and I'm 5'3). Five years later after many life changes I started to gain it all back. Now almost 9 years later I am having a revision surgery. If you don't find a new coping mechanism after surgery (that is not food related) you may find yourself struggling. You will be able to eat "normally" again and the surgery is really just a tool. You can destroy the tool if you want to. Not even on purpose but it can sneak up on you. My very best advice is to take time to really examine everything in your life and what kind of changes you are prepared for. Since you are self pay your process is sped up substantially. We all want this surgery but the best part of having to wait is to be able to really understand what is going to happen (as best you can of course!) Always follow your surgeon and nuts guidelines and seek help from the professional when you feel like you are having problems. Take your Vitamins everyday (for life - no joke) and get your Protein and Water goals met daily. Best of luck.

You definitely need Miralax combined with a stool softener. Fiber won't be enough this close out. Use both the colace and add Miralax but don't use them AND a combo softener/stimulant.

I also had RNY and gained most of my weight back. My surgery was in January 2005. In January 2009 I started gaining after going through a horrific divorce. My life was turned upside down and I turned back to old eating habits. I could eat anything without any problem. I quickly gained back the weight. i never even thought about a revision or that my surgeon would do one since it was my own fault that I gained the weight. In January 2013 I started really thinking about what could be done. I did Weight Watchers, the gym, MFP all that stuff and nothing came of it. I called to get my medical records but never followed up. Then in July I thought I should really pursue it and see my surgeon said. I am a candidate for the revision. I am also treated like a new patient but so much has changed since 2005 I am really grateful for "starting over". I'm expecting to have surgery at the end of this month. Even though this thread is old it makes me feel soooo much better that I am not the only one that has gone through this and has had a successful revision.

This is different for everybody. The best thing I can recommend is to follow your surgeons rules on when to start to eat and drink things (including alcohol). In my case it is six months out but that is my NUT. Keep in mind because of the surgery we get intoxicated A LOT quicker then before. One drink could be too much.

What should I expect in the process?
pear425 replied to ReaRaes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most of this will depend on your insurance. Even the same insurance company has different requirements and exclusions in its policy (where is determined by your employer). The next part will depend on your surgeon and his/her requirements. Next will be your schedule and the surgeons availability and OR schedule. There is no one universal timeline for everybody. As far as time off and I can't imagine needing three to six weeks off for recovery (unless there are complications). Of course that will also depend on what kind of work you do. I personally needed 7 days but decided to take 10 after a trial day back. My honest opinion given what you have said is it is unlikely to have surgery in December or January if you don't meet with the surgeon until the end of November. You will get lots of answers here but it really will be different for each and every person. I would also say even though we all want to get the surgery done and over with you really need to be prepared on an emotional and physical level. Having the time to do all these things is essential. -
Having you already been taking a multi vitamin, calcium + vit. D, iron and B12? You mentioned that you needed to add a supplement. You must take these vitamins for the rest of your life. Since I stopped taking them after 8 years I quickly developed a deficiency with effects that I can't adverse.

4 Syrup ?'s about protein shakes.
pear425 replied to meyouus's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
If you can't use an artificial sweetener you probably won't be able to use the syrups alt all. The regular ones with pure sugars are way to high and you will most likely get sick. -
The only thing that happens to me when I dump is getting diarrhea. For me it is lots of sugar, especially lactose or high amounts of grease and fat. The only time I get the mouth foams or food stuck feeling is if I eat too much pasta.
-
Dumping is very different for each individual. Even if something makes you dump once does not mean it will make you dump if you eat that item again. It's not just sweets that may make people dump but also grease or fat. I am almost 9 years out and still have dumping. It is not every time but it can be a toss up. I am just use to it.
-
Please do not worry. Weight gain is not abnormal and you will also have weight stalls. Keep taking your medicine.

I am a patient of Dr. Averbach at St. Agnes. The nut Nancy Lum is outstanding!! It is very important to have faith in your surgeon but it is also important to have a great nut. Nancy is highly educated and highly trained in Bariatric nutrition and has a special interest in vitamin deficiencies (which are very common with RNY). The staff at the office is wonderful. I always get my questions answered, they return calls super fast and they have specific coordinators that do one thing only (ie scheduling, insurance etc) so they are the expert. St. Agnes is a Center for Bariatric Excellence and Dr. A is an award winning surgeon.
