Need help with protein
purelygraceful replied to bettyblueberry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi walking_one! I've had good luck with most of the flavors. I got a case of the little bottles (8 ounce) in the Alpine Punch flavor and it's good! It does feel like something is very lightly coating your mouth while you drink it (a reviewer on Amazon called it a "filmy" feeling and that's pretty accurate) -- they all have that. I have not tried the coconut flavor (I do have a single bottle of it, but am nervous to try that flavor for some reason). I like the grape a great deal, though I know some reviewers did not like it. It's actually my favorite and I wish I had more than the single bottle (big glass bottle with just over two 8 ounce servings in it). I also have a case (the big glass bottles) of the blue raspberry flavor -- also very good! I didn't care as much for the melon flavor as I did for the others. I liked the mango flavor a lot. I'd say my favorites were grape, alpine punch, and then the blue raspberry. The others were not at all bad to me, though. I know there's a passionfruit flavor and I was not able to et a bottle of that one to try. If you're thinking about ordering on amazon please be sure that it's the zero carb version you put into your cart -- it was little tricky for me when I was shopping as both the zero carb and the higher in carbs versions showed up when I searched for the product and they look nearly identical if you just glance at them. I ordered the small plastic bottles from amazon and went to a Vitamin Shoppe store for the glass bottles. They had them by the case at the Vitamin Shoppe and also individually in the cooler. I sipped on one in my car after leaving the store! I forgot -- I also really liked the orange flavor, which I think gets bad reviews. I suspect that if there is some flavor you really like when not in a Protein drink you'll probably like it in the Protein Drink, too. I love orange flavored things. I like melon, but not as much as other flavors. These drinks are not, in my opinion, sickeningly sweet. They're actually somewhat refreshing and I actually told my sister the other night that I GET to have a protein drink after we finish talking. I like them icy cold. The little bottles are convenient when I need to take one on the go. They're not as delicious as a sports drink, but they're pretty good. They certainly rescued me with the problems I've had with the powders. -
Need help with protein

I have a difficult time with the "milky" looking Protein powders and decided to try the clear Isopure Zero Carb drinks instead. They still have whey isolate protein in them, but you can see through them and for some reason they are going over so much better. I'm hoping I can handle the powders again soon and plan to reintroduce them in a week or so. I also had the heart pounding following meals/protein drinks shortly after surgery -- I'm only two weeks out, but it has gone away completely. I don't think I was dumping. I'm extremely conscious of the number of carbohydrates (not just the sugars on the label, but how many grams of carb are in each item) I consume. I'm a vegetarian, so many of my protein sources have carbohydrates in them (like refried fat free Beans and tofu). I never take in more than 15 grams of carb total per meal and it seems to be working for me so far. That is about how many carbs are in half a cup of anything carb-containing that does not have added sugar it seems. I wanted to ask -- are you using whey isolate or regular whey Protein Powder? The isolate has little to no lactose in it, but regular whey does have lactose. I don't know if that would make a difference to you or not in how your body processes the protein if you were to switch to an isolate if you don't already use one. Or, perhaps, pick up some Lactaid and see if taking that enzyme helps you if the problem is lactose intolerance. I also find that, if I eat too fast, my body responds with the rapid heart rate, hiccupping, and some slight pain in the center of my chest (over my sternum). Are you still on full liquids or are you transitioning into purees now? It was easier for me once I started purees and it was especially better for me when I eat soy instead of dairy as a protein source. My body tolerates soy extremely well, but I get hot and heart poundings (and diarrhea -- sorry, I know it's gross) with dairy. Good luck getting this figured out! I don't know if anything I said helps at all, but I do wish you the best! -

Type 1 diabetes experiences post-op?
purelygraceful posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there. I had gastric bypass on the 26th of August. I'm also a type 1 diabetic. I'm wondering if there are any other type 1's out there who have had this surgery who might be willing to share their experiences. I was able to work very closely with endocrinology while in the hospital and my basal rates in my insulin pump were reduced by about one third. My carb ratio was changed from 1:5 to 1:15 while in the hospital as well. I am still using U-500 strength insulin in my pump, but I can tell from the site changes that I'm using less than half of what I used prior to surgery. I was doing very well with my BG's up until a couple of days ago when I started having moderate lows (in the fifties) quite regularly. I do have an appointment with my CDE (certified diabetes educator -- she's also my pump trainer) tomorrow (9/10/2014), but I'm considering lowering my basal rates a bit on my own before I get to her office. It isn't that I'm covering for too much food and then dropping (though that's happening as well now); I'm dropping at times that cannot be explained by having taken a bolus. The endocrinology NP in the hospital told me that I was responding like she knew most type 1's who've had this type of surgery respond and to expect to gain better control more gradually than a type 2 might -- to be on the lookout especially as I lose more weight. I'm pretty nervous about going too low and not being able to take care of it as I live alone. I see my endocrinologist next week (not till Friday), but my CDE can adjust the pump after we talk, too. I'm hoping that, very soon, my endocrinologist might let me switch over to U-100 strength insulin (and a rapid acting one would make mealtimes so much easier for me so that I can stop worrying about running in a bolus half an hour before I eat like I do with Regular -- I mean on top of all the rest of the food rules we deal with it is tricky enough). I plan to discuss the U-100 with my CDE tomorrow as well as asking the NP at my endo's office about it next week. Does anyone have any advice for me or stories of their own to share about changes to the control of their diabetes? I'd really appreciate hearing anything you're willing to share with me. Thank you very much! -

What is your goal?
purelygraceful replied to darby1430's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I want to take my nephews to the NY State Fair next August. I want to take them to Darien Lake (a big theme park). I want to be able to watch them and know I can keep up with them. I'd like to be able to jog, maybe even run, one day. I hope to have less pain and better control of my type 1 diabetes (already have success in these two areas!!!). I'd also love to be able to wear tall boots and have them fit! I want to able to move better and have more stamina. I'd like to not need oxygen at night while I sleep and to ditch my CPAP. I want to not be afraid to fly on an airplane because of the size of the seats and to not worry about offending other people because I take up "too much" room so I can think about going with family members to Disney (and to them go on rides and walk around freely!!!). I want to die of old age and not because of weight-related causes. I want to be able to go out dancing till dawn. I want to feel good enough to take classes if I want to, good enough to work full-time, good enough to know that I am not going to need to go sit in the car while out shopping with my sister. I'm 12 days out from gastric bypass surgery. I haven't stepped on a scale since the follow up appointment on day 8 post op where I was told I had lost 19 pounds so far -- weight that day was 320 pounds. Already have reduced my basal insulin rate by 33% and my correction factor improved to 1 unit of insulin per 15 grams of carb from 1 unit of insulin to 5 grams of carb (type 1 on an insulin pump). Still using U-500 insulin (concentrate), but may very soon change over to U-100 strength insulin (non-concentrated). Using less than half the amount of insulin I was using prior to surgery. Blood pressure medicine discontinued. Lasix discontinued.
