Good morning everyone! At least it's morning here in California. I have some exciting news to share. I am a week from being seven months out and this weigh day marked my 100 pound weight loss. I am down to 167 pounds and 33.5 inches all around my body, I have lost 10 pant sizes, I'm starting to get muscle tone now, and what I'm super excited about- I FIT ON ROLLER COASTERS AGAIN! Tell me something you were excited about when you hit One-derland, or what you hope to do once you get there.

So my boyfriend and I have been dating for almost three years now. He and his whole family are super into fitness so you can imagine my discomfort at family functions where I was the only big fat whale among a whole group of athletic gym rats. When I decided to have the surgery my boyfriend had a few questions but once he was convinced it was safe for me, he was very supportive. I just asked him not to tell anyone. Especially his judgmental mother. His mom hates me. And I mean HATES me. And i have no idea why. I'm pretty sure that its physically painful for her to say something nice to me. She was constantly dropping hints that I needed to lose weight. If I have an opinion, no matter what it is, it's wrong because she reads more books than I do and is therefor more intelligent than I am. But which one of us has a bachelors degree? Oh right, me. The first time she met my parents she was completely rude to them too. When my boyfriend and I were still in school he played football in Montana and I was at Fresno State. My dad and I flew out to watch his game and when we got to the game, she wouldn't let us sit next to her. Then after the game my boyfriend invited us to go to dinner with them and not only did she uninvite us, she said that she wanted this weekend to be a "family weekend." So she barred me from seeing him or hanging out with them. She is very complementary to her daughters boyfriend even though he is 20 years older than her. In fact she is very complementary to everyone who isn't me especially in front of me. They make family vacation plans and she makes sure to include her daughters boyfriends but not me. I could go on for hours about things she does but I think you understand how unpleasant she is. Anyway my boyfriend finally admitted to me that he let it slip that I had the surgery. His mom and sister totally attacked my decision. His sister is a personal trainer so she went on the whole "that's a cheaters way out, why didnt she just work out? She would have been happier losing weight on her own." route that I'm sure we have all heard. And to that I say, I don't regret my decision at all. I am happy with my surgery and news flash, I AM doing this on my own. I do watch what I eat and exercise. I just have a secret weapon now. And I think I've done awesome. I'm just a little under 4 months out and I've lost 67 pounds and 25 inches all around my body. And now on to the response of my favorite person. My boyfriend's mom told him that I am lazy for doing this surgery and i should not have done it and I will never be good enough for him because I just give up and look for a quick fix to my problems and that's not the kind of woman she wants for him. M But what do I do now? I need some advice from my support group. And thanks for reading this whole thing, I know it was a mile long.

Hubby and I am back and forth about getting a RNY, your Opinions?
stephjoysm replied to meyouus's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I believe that your husband will support your choice to take a step towards a healthier lifestyle. I can understand his concern but the RNY, in my opinion, is the best tool you can have in your corner when you are battling weight loss. I feel like the RYN surgery has not only physically changed my eating habits by only allowing me to eat very small portions but I credit it with also mentally changing my eating habits. I make better choices when deciding what to put into my body. That's not to say I don't occasionally allow myself a taste of something I'm not allowed to have. But that's all, just a taste. I don't need to have sugar bomb deserts anymore. I don't need that late night calorie monster snack. The sick feeling is totally not worth the 5 seconds of eating that food. I really think this is what you need. I believe having a consequence, especially after you've experienced said consequence, will really help you stop and think about what you are eating and also stop to decide what foods you want and what foods you actually need. -
Thank you so much everyone. I really appreciate your advice and support. I knew I could count on this group of people for someone to lean on.

Hubby and I am back and forth about getting a RNY, your Opinions?

This is your struggle. I think the bypass would be a good tool for you. I got the bypass just a few months ago back in July. I know what you mean when you say food addiction. With the bypass though, if you try to eat a piece of cake, you won't regret it a year later when you've regained all the weight. You will regret that cake right that second. I believe the bypass has worked so well for me so far because it has a punishment that is so uncomfortable I'm scared to tempt its wrath. Suddenly that cake or cheeseburger or whatever it might be is not worth feeling so sick. It's hard at first. But once you adjust and experience what the RNY does for you, the diet part becomes second nature. Just the thought of a bite of cake makes me nauseous. Maybe that's what you need too. My mom got the lap band several years ago and has done great with it but she wishes that she had done the bypass instead because the band doesn't have a punishment for going off the diet so she is constantly losing and gaining the same 5-7 pounds because once in a while she folds to her cravings. Hope this helped. -
I am just over 7 weeks out and had been dying for a salad. While I was out running errands my dad asked me to stop and get him a subway sandwich. While I was ordering his sandwich I noticed the chopped salad sign. They put what you want in a big giant salad bowl and then chop it up into little pieces with this big hand blade. It's perfect! I ordered spinach with turkey breast, bell pepper, onion, olives and banana peppers with vinegar instead of dressing. It's awesome. It's kind of big I finished maybe a third of it.

Ok so I am starting my 6th week and I have a ton of almond milk left over from my cream of wheat days. The nurses at my doctors office aren't awesome about answering the phone or calling you back. So has anyone tried a little bowl of cereal yet? I know most cereal is junk but has anyone tried the kashi or Special K cereals with protein in them?

Hey everyone. I'm looking to see if anyone here is in Bakersfield. Haven't seen anyone from Bakersfield so far. Also did anyone else have their surgery done by Dr. Higa in Fresno? Just curious.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Ok so I am just a little over 8 weeks out. Up until a few days ago I had no nausea what so ever. I felt great. Recently I have been feeling nauseous fairly often and especially around meal times. When I look at my food choices my stomach flips the. After I eat I just feel icky. The food goes down just fine. I measure out my meals, follow the guidelines set by my NUT and doctor, low sugar, all that. What's going on? -

I hadn't thought of that. I guess it's possible but I don't have any other symptoms. -
I am going to San Diego with my boyfriend for Labor Day weekend. By then I will be half way through my eighth week. I am learning how to eat again and so far have only struggled with a few things. I need some ideas for foods that travel well in a back pack. We are going to sea world and the zoo and the wild animal park so I would like to avoid buying food from the parks as I'm sure it's mostly expensive junk. I am not allowed to have protein bars or shakes (stupid I know) I have fruit and nuts and packets of peanut butter. Any other ideas?

Hahaha awesome description. I tasted it and had to make sure I didn't eat part if the box.

Ok so I am almost 7 weeks out. I was ready to pull my hair out because I was needing something crunchy but refused to give into chips, so my doctor suggested dry roasted almonds. She hit the nail on the head. I love the crunch and little hint of salt on them. I eat a couple with lunch and a couple as a mid day snack. That was just the crunch I needed and it's so much better than the family size bag of chips I used to go through in a day. I can't believe how much I ate! Anyone else finding yummy substitutes for old favorites? I have tried making zucchini chips and zucchini pizza in the oven and turkey meatballs with low sugar spaghetti sauce to curb my spaghetti cravings. Delish.

I haven't tried it in tea but I tried it in oatmeal. I had to use a lot of it just to sweeten a bowl or oatmeal when just 1 Splenda packet would have done it. I have used truvia sweetener to make sweet tea and it was pretty good.

Please, if this has happened to anyone at my stage.....
stephjoysm replied to vicki s's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so relieved to hear this is common. I am currently 7 weeks out and finally out of my stall. My first week I lost 11 pounds then I wouldn't lose anything for 5 or 6 days then boom I'd drop 5 pounds in a day then stall again. I got really depressed because during my first stall I GAINED weight. I was beside myself. I mean how could it be possible that I gain two pounds when I'm not eating anything but freakin Popsicles?!? I was so frustrated and at my 3 week post op I fell apart when the doctor asked me what I thought of my weight loss. Once she calmed me down she explained that its totally normal. She said your body is still trying to figure out what happened and it thinks its starving because you went from eating gajillions of calories and lots of fat and sugar to eating maybe a couple hundred calories of low fat and no sugar. The key for me was to stop weighing everyday. I weigh only on Wednesdays since my surgery was on a Wednesday. I took measurements and next week I will take them again to see how many inches I've lost at 2 months out. Don't beat yourself up. We are all here for you! -
Great suggestions. Thanks. Keep 'em comin!

I am 7 weeks out and a few weeks ago I stopped losing and even started gaining. I went into a little depression and even questioned why I had done this surgery. My doctor told me to keep my head up and keep going because she had seen patients like me that stall a little bit. Well today is weigh day and I am happy to say that it looks like my stalling is over because I jumped from a 28 pound loss to a 37 pound loss in a week and a half.

Where do you buy spaghetti squash? I've seen it all over Pinterest. I can't have quinoa yet. My doctors doesn't allow any grains, breads, cereals, or anything until 6 months.

I am 6 weeks out and my boyfriend is taking me out to dinner to Celebrate a new job. We decided on sushi for dinner. Before I get chastised for anything, I know I can't have rice. Really. I know. My favorite roll doesn't have rice or seaweed anyway. It's just tuna wrapped around shredded crab meat. One of my friends had her surgery 4 years out and said she started with eating the inside of spring rolls because it was soft and went down easy then graduated her self to small bites of teriyaki chicken or some grilled fish. Then slowly moved to rolls with rice. I already do just fine with grilled fish. I love salmon. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Maybe a fish and veggie dish? Any sushi ideas?
-
Ok so the restaurant we went to was a bust. I couldn't order a roll without the rice (some restaurants do that). Ok no big ill just look at the fish or chicken. ALL TERIYAKI!! Ugh. So I asked for it with no sauce. They couldn't do that. So I tried tuna sashimi thinking it would be like the tuna in the sushi rolls. Negative. It tasted fishy and gross. While we were eating three other people came in and asked if they could order sushi without the rice. Why wouldn't a restaurant evolve to accommodate special diets? That's three checks that walked out the door in an hour. Anyway, I won't give up on sushi but I will be more picky about how my food is prepared.

Does anyone have problems with corn? I know its hard to digest but has anyone tried it? I have a favorite zucchini dish that is just little zucchini chunks, little stewed tomato chunks and corn with just a sprinkle of mozzarella. Anyway... I'm craving a little bit of corn and was wondering if anyone had tried it.
-
I was craving pickles so bad. I loved them before surgery and was dying for a slice of pickle. I can't eat solid food for another two days so I took a sip of the pickle juice from the jar . . . Then another . . Then one more OMG it was amazing. I had to put the jar away before I drank the whole thing. I've never craved pickles so bad before. Could it have been the salt?
-
I went back through my diet plan from the doctor and my nut and there was nothing on there that said no corn. So I made the recipe and everything went just fine. I tried to eat just a few kernels at a time and chewed them until there was just about nothing left. It went down easy and I don't have any blockage symptoms.
