Surgery in 5 hours...
ShirleyJ84 replied to caitiegirly07's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You are going to be fine. I always find myself with anxiety before anything major. Good luck with everything today and I look forward to seeing you progress -
So my surgeon mentioned something during my seminar that RNY wasn't the best option for those who take steroids for arthritis. Well, guess who was just diagnosed with arthritis? This gal. So now I'm just trying to figure stuff out. I'm not sure how long I'm going to be on my current medication or if I'm going to be off it before I have surgery in February. I'm just so confused! Has anyone else been told the same in regards to the meds?
-
I am also hoping to be a February surgery. I will be done with my 6 months in January then submitting to the insurance afterwards. It's been a long process but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

After letting myself slide for the past month and not logging my food intake I have gained weight. I know I'm still preop and still below where I started but I never thought that the logging would be such a valuable tool. So as of today I'm logging everything I put in my mouth. Hopefully by having this set back now will help me realize that I need to log for me and not anyone else. No one is going to do it for me I have to do yr myself. Sorry, my rant is over.

I'm just worried that since I'm preop that the insurance company is going to come back and say no due to the fact that I've gained this month. I sure hope not.

Candy, I was never told about the 6 months when I spoke directly to the agents but quickly found out it was required when I first saw my surgeon. So now I'm going through the visits and it feels like it's taking forever.

What do I need to pack?

Maybe light reading material? -
I am just starting my journey and I feel that this site has some amazing people on here. So I figured I would put this out there just to be held accountable in my journey (I just started my 6 months doctor supervised diet last week). I have made the decision to not step on a scale in between doctors appointments. I want to focus on changing my eating habits before I worry about that darn number. I am already scaling back on the sweets and any other junk I do not need and since my first appointment with my surgeon on the 12th of August and my appointment with my doc last week, I am down a total of about 3.5 lbs. I know this is a small victory, but at least the scale is not moving in the opposite direction (but I am not touching one in between visits, it will just be about listening to my body to know when to eat and how much). I figured this would be one of the hardest things for me to do and if I start now it will help me succeed.

I have two insurances, the first is Anthem BCBS (they don't cover squat) I also have the Indiana Medicaid (since I'm off in the summers I qualify).
-
He seems like a great doctor. I mostly met with his PA when I was down there. I actually am not taking any chances with my visits I am seeing two doctors just to cover all my bases and my butt. I finally have coverage for surgery and it will be done. I'm tired of being severely overweight

I too am going to Dr Evanson at St Vincent's in Carmel. I did the psych eval with Dr Stote and found out that day I was recommended without any other hoops from him. I did find out I had to do a 6 month diet so I am anxiously doing that with my family doctor. I just want the time to go by quickly so I can get this done and over with.
-
So I am on the first month of my doctor supervised diet (I was previously told I needed no supervised diet and now apparently I do). I am just getting a little antsy I guess. But I have two insurances (first doesn't cover it, second does) but I only have the second insurance for either 6 months or a year (they never could tell me which one). All of my doctors say there is no reason for them to deny me but I just have to wait. Well, I am scared to death that my insurance is going to lapse before I am able to get all my months in. I know I probably have nothing to worry about but I feel trapped. Ugh, I just needed to get that off of my chest.
-
I figured since I am still pre op I am ok with giving the scale up. But afterwards I am not sure how I will feel about it. I'm just trying to get in the healthy eating mind frame before surgery. I can't say that I'm never going to step on my scale but during the next 6 months I'm not at home.

"Ah Ha" moment... aka "How the hell did I let myelf get to this"

So I went to my seminar on Monday and everything was great, I'm very happy with the surgical staff and both the surgeon and his p.a. are absolutely amazing. So I get the lovely letter in the mail today from the surgical group stating what all I need to do before my insurance will cover my procedure and it is the normal psych evaluation, 5 year weight history and then the lovely 6 month doctor supervised diet (mind you my previous pcp was amazing and I never had trouble getting in to see him but the new doctor is crazy to get in to see and has waiting list for appointments). So now I'm trying to rack my brain about how to proceed from here. Basically which of my doctors it's going to be best for me to see to do this 6 month plan. Sorry for the rant I just needed to get it off my chest.

Kristy3k am I reading that right you have lost almost 200 lbs in 6 months? If so that is amazing (even not that amount of time it is still phenomenal). What is your secret to the amazing loss? I'm in the same boat. -
Doctor Supervised Diet...
ShirleyJ84 replied to ShirleyJ84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for the reply. I have considered that but where I am having my surgery is over a hour away from my house so it is not totally out of the question but I am not sure if I want to travel down and back for 6 months (and having to worry about taking lots of time off of work). I figure this has happened for a so I can relax and get all the nasty stuff I was eating out of my life for good and talk to my employer about adding a std rider encase I am out longer than I expect. I am at a place of understanding now but on Friday I was aggravated and ticked off. Plus it gives me more time for research and such -
Well, I found out today that the one was a failed band and the other could not break her addiction to sodas. It is amazing how people can become addicted to something and not be able to break it for their own good. I have not touched a soda in two days (I know it's only two days but it is a start and you need to start somewhere). I am starting on my new beginning so here we go!

I think all of my fears stem from the old open procedures they used to do. The one nagging feeling I have no matter the procedure is what if I fail. I work with two individuals that have had the RNY and both of them failed miserably. I know that everyone is different and my experience is different than that of someone else. But other than that, I am alright right now but if I have further questions that I need help with I will send them out and hopefully get good information and insight from people who have been there.
-
Thank you for all the insight. After looking it over I have decided that the RNY is going to be best for me. I have insulin resistance and that is why I am seeing my endocrinologist (along with a severe Vitamin D deficiency). I keep thinking to what we were told during the seminar yesterday and that has sealed the deal for me. He said that every band patient will need to have some type of surgery over the next 10 years no matter what the type. When I first came into thinking about surgery I thought band would be it but I have changed my mind and I am beyond ready to do this. Next step, my psych eval next Wednesday afternoon. Thank you everyone once again. It helps to be able to turn to others who have been in the same situation

Thank you for sharing your blog for everyone to see. I have a few questions (I am going to meet with my surgeon in two weeks just to start my process). First, how long did it take from start to surgery? It seems like it was really quick for everything to go through for you. Second, what made you go for the RNY? I am still in the deciding phase to which procedure to get. Lastly, is not a question just a statement, congratulations on your success in the beginning. Shirley
