    Help after Surgery ?

I don't think I would have been ok by myself the first few days. It may have been just me scared of overdoing it and popping open my incisions or developing a hernia in my healing muscles. But I needed help getting out of bed. I needed help in the bathroom. I was also scared to be by myself on pain meds when I sleep because of my sleep apnea. The pain meds made me have more apnea episodes even with my cpap on. Everyone is different and you may want to have someone on standby that can come over and help in a pinch just in case you find yourself having more difficulty than you anticipate.

    How about some NSVs!?!?

There was a little gap between me and the steering wheel this morning on my first commute to work after surgery. Great way to start the day.

    What ya eating tonight?

Homemade chili made with my first attempt at homemade chili sauce from whole chillies. So good!

    How about some NSVs!?!?

My driver's license weight initially had the first two numbers transposed. I was 238 at the time, and they put 328 and didn't want to print a new one. I had this feeling like someday it would turn out to be true and I really would be that heavy. I was right. And then some. Can't wait til I need a new license now, though. My NSV today was pulling my pants off without unbuttoning or unzipping them lol. Just a short time ago they were so uncomfortablely tight I stopped wearing them for a while in favor of dresses.

    What ya eating tonight?

Crab meat sauteed in a little butter and garlic with some montreal chicken seasoning. Good stuff. Still scared to try vegetables. I lived vicariously through my husband and his gorgeous salad lol.

    Friday Weigh-In!

SW: 376 LW: 362 CW: 359 Seemed to stall for several days and got a bit depressed. But have realized my body was taking time to catch up and drop sizes.
  7. I wanted to live to a "ripe old age". And diabetes scares the hell out of me. Having been obese since childhood I knew I was playing a game against the clock and time was running out to lose weight before I start seeing the real consequences of my poor eating habits. I also want to have kids and give my husband that gift, and I can't do that at such a heavy weight. Even if I could, I wouldn't be able to run after and play with them and care for them as well as I would if I was smaller. What kind of life would that be, you know? So these are all my motivations. I'm just 3 weeks post op and I absolutely still have that need inside to eat more than I can handle. However, now if I go one bite too far I am in SO much pain. I also have the fear of vomiting, dumping, blockages, and hospitalization if I don't do what I am supposed to. Those are very powerful motivations for me. And let me also say, it is so awesome to start seeing my clothes get baggy, and my face thin out. Seriously. It just makes me happy to finally be getting somewhere. It's also nice not to feel like such a pig anymore when I eat, because my meals are minuatures now :-). Think about what motivatates you, what do you want out of life, and what goals you want to set for yourself. If having a gastric bypass will help you reach those goals, then do it. Obesity has a much higher mortality rate than gastric bypass.
  8. I would really like to add some diced cucumber to my yogurt, but not sure if this is ok on soft foods stage. Anyone else know?

    Afraid to Fail... AGAIN

Just curious, why gastric bypass instead of duodenal switch? I thought DS was the sister surgery to VSG. And I totally understand the fear of failure. I feel the same way ans have had surgery just a few weeks ago. That feeling inside me to want to eat more food than I should is still there. I'm hoping that over time it subsides enough to ignore since it will not be physically possible and/or I will feel significant pain if I try to go off track. I wish for the best for you and highly recommend local support groups before and after surgery.
  10. The vertical gastric sleeve surgery is what actually got me to consider weight loss surgery to begin with, after my husband had been bringing it up for 2 years prior. The weight loss is supposedly faster, but tapers off sooner than gastric bypass. I was going to have VSG myself until the surgeon did my EDG and said it wasn't an option for me (I have an unusually shaped stomach). So for the first 4 months on this journey I spent all my time over at gastricsleeve.com and it was an awesome forum with wonderful people. Highly recommend checking it out.

    August Post Ops

Being off work on vacation like this I would normally be trying to put everything in sight in my mouth. It's so much different now.

    What ya eating tonight?

I would think you may want to parboil the brown rice first since the cooking time is usually longer.

    What ya eating tonight?

High protein mashed taters. Made with garlic, nonfat milk, reduced fat cheese, and unjury chicken soup flavor protein powder.

I'm down 17lbs since the day of surgery 8/26, but I also gained 21lbs in the hospital. Down almost 50lbs since I started this journey and I am just starting to see the difference.

So it turns out that I do get the full feeling lol. Apparently I was about 4 bites away. And it was very uncomfortable for about an hour. Much better to simply measure and stick with that. Guessing was not fun.

    Hummus on soft foods stage

Were you able to handle hummus on soft foods stage? How about lentils? I'd like to make some hummus to eat, but am questioninf whether that will be too hard to digest at this stage. I'm 2 weeks post op.

    Hummus on soft foods stage

They shouldn't be anything like sand, that's for sure. I haven't tried many commercial ones, but I did like the one they have at Costco.

    Hummus on soft foods stage

Good idea. I have a bucket of unjury chicken soup flavor coming tomorrow that I will mix in. I made an Indian style dal that is very similar in texture to hummus. So nice to have something with some spices.
  20. I found out the hard way that overdoing it will make me very nauseated. I tries doubling my walk and made myself very nauseated the rest of the day and night. Then did the same thing again the next night. So it looks like my body just isn't ready to go that far yet. I wish I could walk as far as you all at this stage. I'd love to enjoy the rest of my time off going to some outdoor parks and zoos, but I just don't think I can handle that much walking yet.

    frightened

Cigna has the requirement of either 3 months supervised weightloss or 10% total body weight loss. I was warned by my surgeon's office very strictly that I could not gain weight during this time. Stay the same or lose. I'm sorry to say you may have a hard time with insurance. It might be worth trying this again for 3 months to start that part over.
  22. I'm 2 weeks post op and can tell you the commercials are having the same effect at this point. I have tried to watch Netflix and read as much as possible to avoid commercials for that reason. Protein shakes are completely unappetizing. The only difference is it is just my head. My stomach has no desires.

I'm thinking about just going ahead and adding some yogurt or cottage cheese even though I have another week and a half of liquids.

I seem to be having as many good days as bad. I feel great one day, and exhausted and tired and lethargic the next. Maybe I'm doing too much and pushing too hard on the good days. Still being on liquids is taking a toll. My nutrition options are very limited so some days I just don't care and don't bother trying to get it all in. The protein shakes I have now make me gag except the hot chocolate and beef broth ones. Milk I can drink. Flavored water. But protein wise I'm totally falling behind.
