After surgery I became super sensitive to sweet/sugars. Went to eat sushi at 4 months out, I spit it out it was so sweet. Tried the sashimi it must have been soaked in sugar water. Tried several more sushi places but it was all the same. They definitely add some sort of sugar to sushi. I wonder if it's industry wide? Few weeks later I went fishing and caught a small tuna. One the way home from the dock, I stopped at Sushi bar and ordered the tuna sashimi. At home I ate the tuna I caught followed by the restaurant bought sushi. I observed that the restaurant bought sushi had way to much sweetness to it. I feel I have been duped all these years by sushi bars. Thinking I was getting clean from the source food when now I suspect that some type of sugar is added before it gets to our table. Glad now I can make a wise choice about what to eat instead of the food industry deciding for me.

What I have lost and what I have gained
monola replied to shmily's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good Luck to everyone with upcoming surgeries. The waiting for it is the worst part but after the surgery a new life marches on. I have two bits of advice. First follow your doctors plan unless he is a quack and says stuff like, " Eat lots of raw pork and smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day." Second, this is your individual journey. I can tell you I would get upset reading posts of people saying stuff like, "oh, I am 2 months out and I have only lost 69 pounds." They'd act like this wasn't good enough and here I am struggling to drop 30. It was like a knife in the heart. So I made a decision and stayed away from the boards until I got confident in my own journey. I am all for people losing 69 pounds in 2 months but I wish they would state it positive like, 'I can't believe I have lost 69 pounds!" I be , "You GO Girl!!!" So if read the post from people after don't let it chip away at you because its your Odyssey not anyone else. Stay away from those posts and keep positive in every ounce that you shed. Once again I will be thinking of you on May 6 and 7th. -
My doctor said that drinking anything while eating is the way most pouches become stretched other than massive eating

What I have lost and what I have gained
monola replied to shmily's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey Bridget, don't worry you will be able to eat and enjoy food again just with a new perspective. I have found that everyone is different especially on this board. I had RNY Dec 9th, I am down 70 pounds. For me, my surgeon was so good that I thought they hadn't done anything. No pain or nausea. It could have been outpatient for me. In fact, I kept calling the doctor's office to make sure he operated on me. I don't throw up, get the foamies, diarrhea,or constipation. In 5 months, only once have I eaten too much and that extra bite made me feel what people here discuss feeling. That said, I have and can eat. One really bad week, I ate 6 pieces if pizza with no problem. It basically boils down to this surgery is a tool. I have learned to portion my food, eat at certain times and relieve stress by walking instead of food. Also the worst of it for me is that I can eat fried fatty foods and sugar with no problems. These are not good things to be able to do but I have been told by the surgeon that most people can tolerate it and it's up to us to change our behavior. So for me it is still a daily struggle but I have learned how to win most of the battles. Good luck to you and your surgery, hopefully you too will find the path you need to follow. -
Was that one and a half cups per meal?

Try the GNC Lean Shakes ... I love them, mainly the strawberry -
This happened to me on both hips after surgery. It turned out to be hip bursitis. I had steroid shots in the hips and did a few hip bursitis exercises and the inflammation went away. Knock on wood!

I love Celestial Seasoning Bengal Spice tea. I brew it and chill it. It take like milk less Chai. I love it. Its caffeine free. I dont think it needs anything sugar or sugar substitute wise. Love this stuff hot or cold. -

Morningstar Farms is a line of vegetarian products in the freezer section. Their "griller" is a vegetarian burger, and they make veg sausage patties, "chick'n" patties and other stuff. Seems like they sit well with me, sometimes better than actual meat, and are really high in Protein. How many carbs are in that stuff. I thought that they replace the meat and fat with sugar type binders. My doctor was adamant about reducing any type of sugars.

I am three months out and ate my first crawfish last week, I could have cared less about the 5 buck a pound price tag bc all I could eat was 9 crawfish shy of a pound
-
I received liquid pain meds also. Luckily post op I no longer had to take 5 meds. So only two pills I need to empty or crush. One for ulcers in the remnant and the other for the gallbladder. But I only have to take those the first six months.

I was in the same boat and called my doctor's office in a panic. They got my head back in the game and in the last month I have dropped 20 pounds. I am 3 months in. My PA told me that our bodies are still healing and to follow the doctor's orders exactly. She was right. the little things i was doing was making my body on hold but now i am on track.

What Protein Shakes Do You Use?
monola replied to LosingItForMe2011's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I have been living off of GNC Lean Shake Strawberries and Cream since my Dec. 9 surgery. They taste great. 25g of protein and only 2g of sugar. I seriously could not have made it without them. They come in other flavors, choc, vanilla and pumpkin spice. But I prefer the strawberry. -
Constipated.? Retaining Fluid? Menstruation soon? Could be all the Miralax I take to keep from getting constipated. But now that you mention it probably Water retention. I went from 80mg lasix to none.

December Surgeries!?!?!?
monola replied to preopmano's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also on gabapentin and omeprazole also Prozac. I have found that mixing them in nectar pink grapefruit kinda masks the taste a little. But I am thankful I only have to do it 5 months and 4 days more. Lol
