Hello,
This is my first time posting here, although I lurked for a while. I need some advice about my current situation.
I weigh about 270 and have been overweight for most of my life. I am married and have 2 boys (7 and 5). At one time I wanted a third baby but my husband did not. So, we started making other plans. We both enrolled in grad school and got our master's degrees. We changed jobs and bought our dream house. Then, I finally decided it was time to do something about my weight and started looking into gastric bypass.
Earlier this year I started going through all of the steps to get ready for the surgery. The Friday before Memorial Day, all of my requirements were complete and the surgeon's office submitted the paperwork to my insurance. The surgeon said that I could probably have it approved and scheduled by the end of June, which works out great because I'm a teacher. THEN - two days later - I realize my period is late. Take a test, and yep - I'm pregnant. I'm due Feb. 2.
Needless to say, we were both floored. I know it's selfish, but all I could think about was that I was going to have to postpone the surgery. That didn't last long, though. We're very excited about the baby coming. Even my hubby, who never said he wanted a third child, is over the moon about it. However, he made a promise to me that I would get the surgery as soon as possible after I have the baby. He knows how important the surgery is to me.
I called the surgeon's office when I found out and told them I would have to wait. (The nurse laughed and said it happens a lot!) She said I'd just have to come in again when I was ready, that I wouldn't have to repeat any steps. But here's my question - how long will I have to wait after the baby comes? Does anyone have experience with this? Google searching only brings up topics on the opposite (getting pregnant after surgery). I don't want to call up the surgeon and bug them about when I'm still such a long way off from having it done. I did ask my OB yesterday, but he said that he really wasn't sure. He did mention waiting until I was done breastfeeding. But, with my other two I had very low supply and only breastfed for about 2 months. My big question is: if I have the baby around Feb. 2, would it even be feasible to think about surgery next June? Since I'm a teacher, it's really the only time I can do it. I don't want to have to wait a whole other year if I don't have to.
Thanks in advance for any replies!
