July 2013 - Post Op Thread
MGteacher replied to PittGuy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was 6/18. I had slow weight loss also, but it's recently picked up. I lost only 1 lb. over a period of about 18 days. I was freaked out. I have lost 9 lbs. these last 14 days, so whatever was holding me back is gone, at least for now. Stalls are normal. Hang in there! -
Don't know if the photos will show up. If they do, this is 10 weeks after surgery. Down 42 pounds with the 7 I lost during the 2-day pre/op liquid diet. Feeling so much better!

Horrible experience thus far.
MGteacher replied to missmachine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry you're going through this. I cannot relate to much of what you're experiencing, so all I can really say is hang in there. I can relate to the fever. I had a post-op infection and I still remember the horrible night at the hospital with uncontrollable chills and needing to request additional blankets and a heating pad. It was awful and it sounds like your situation is much worse. Hopefully, things will quickly improve and you'll be grateful for this surgery. Keep us posted. -

What ya eating tonight?
MGteacher replied to OleHippieGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just had my first salad. I had the 1/2 size Asian Chicken salad from Panera. I finished the chicken, but left some lettuce behind. I also left off the fried wontons. I'm technically not supposed to have salad until Tuesday, but wanted to try it out on a weekend!! So far, so good. -

I think Southern accents are adorable! I am sorry your in laws were so horrible to you. Hang in there and try not to take it personally. It's their problem, not yours. -
My weight loss has still been sluggish. I've lost 1 lb. in 2 weeks, BUT I measured my waist today and it's 1 1/2 inches smaller than it was only 7 days ago! Yay!
-
Hang in there. It gets better! I wasn't able to sleep on my side for weeks. I'm impressed that you were even able to try do soon after surgery. I'm now 7 weeks out, and feeling pretty darn good!

I am right with you. I was a size 26 or tight size 24 before surgery. Tops were 3X. I'm down 33 lbs. since school let out in June. Tops are now 2X or even 1X, and pants are loose size 24 or tight size 22. My bottom half isn't keeping up with my top half! I got rid of a lot, but still need school clothes. School starts next week. I don't think I'll purge my entire old wardrobe for another 15 lbs.

Frustrated w/ Slow Loss
MGteacher replied to MGteacher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My protein for today is 81g, which is higher than usual. I think I normally get about 65 g. I was told to stay between 60-80. -
I've only lost 2 lbs. in the last 8 days. I'm only 6 weeks out, so this is troubling. I was on my period this past week, so I thought I'd have a stellar week. It's so disappointing. Surgery weight was 260. I'm at 234, so I've lost 26 lbs since surgery. I'm getting about 58 oz. of liquid a day, Protein is about 68 g. a day, and calorie count is about 650 a day. My carb to protein ratio could be better. Sometimes they are nearly equal and sometimes my protein is double my carbs. I've been having a little fruit and select other carbs (oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, and very limited quantities of crackers, peanuts, and healthy wraps). By very limited, I mean very little. I think I've had 3 crackers total, 1 wrap total, and about 1/4 cup total of peanuts. Any suggestions or ideas? Exercise has been tough due to a plantar faciitis flair up. I am trying to get back to walking. Oh, I've also been on lots of antibiotics while fighting an infection. Could that be slowing things down?

Upped my calorie count to just over 800 for today only. Hoping that might kick start the stall. Plan to go back to about 650 tomorrow. Good idea or bad? -

Any idea what's an acceptable amount of sodium for someone consuming about 650 calories? I track my food and it always says I'm good on sodium, but I'm not sure it takes into account the amount of calories I'm consuming. -

I wrote earlier today because my weight loss seems so slow. I'm down 32 lbs. if you count my 7 lbs. that I lost on the 2 day pre-op liquid diet. Anyway, I decided to try on some clothing which I haven't worn since before surgery. Surprisingly, a lot if it is too big now. That made me want to take a new photo wearing my same pre-op clothes. Here it is. I'm happy with the improvement so far. I need to not worry about the scale so much!

Thanks for all the advice and input. I really appreciate it. I am going to try to cut back a bit on carbs, but after reading about ketosis, I don't want to go crazy in that area. I guess I just need to wait it out and increase my exercise. I am seeing my NUT for the first time since surgery this coming Friday, so I'll see what she says. I just want to be one of those people who lose enough to reach goal and I expected the lbs. to just melt off. I had two friends who said they felt like crayons just melting away. I'm not feeling that. I was in tight size 24 pants before and I am in tight size 22 pants now. I carry most of my weight in the mid-section. Wish I could choose where it comes off first. My face is looking slimmer and I have lost everywhere to a lesser extent. I am afraid to put the scale away. I think I handle the slow loss better when I weigh daily. If I went a full week and didn't see a loss, I think I'd cry. Thanks again for the support. It means a lot. -

Tried the Qdoba Naked Taco Salad w/ a double scoop of black beans. I'm not cleared for lettuce yet, so I only had two tiny bites if lettuce. Mostly ate the beans, chicken, and tomatoes. Made two meals out of one salad and still threw a big portion of lettuce away. Can't wait until I can just eat a salad, lettuce and all. -
How about some NSVs!?!?

That dress looks amazing on you. Way to go! -
I'm almost 6 weeks out and I average almost 600 calories a day. One day I had almost 800 and I felt guilty! I am only allowed 3 meals ( no liquids like Soup, shakes, etc) and Protein shakes only between meals. I get about 60-70 grams of protein each day and I'm usually a few ounces shy of my 64 oz. of fluids. I feel like I'm losing slowly, too. I only lost 2 lbs. in the last 9 days. Down 26 lbs. from surgery. For those looking to add protein and calories, try this. Blend 4 oz. milk, one contain Light and Fit vanilla Greek yogurt, a scoop of vanilla Protein powder, and fruit of your choice. I've used blueberries and peaches, and liked both. It's a 200+ calorie shake, but it's healthy and has lots if protein.

HWT: 270 SWT: 260 CWT: 234 Surgery Date: 6/18/13 I'm down 26 lbs. since surgery, but 31 lbs. if you count my 2-day pre-op diet. It seems kind of slow to me, but I'll take it. Just started my period this am (TMI), so hoping this will be a great week! -

I made an Egg McMuffin, of sorts. Used 1/2 of a 100 calorie English muffin topped with an egg, shaved ham, low fat American cheese and a slice of avocado. Could only eat half of it, but it was yummy. -
Has anyone else from June not had their first post-op doctor appointment? Surgery was 6/18. My doctor switched surgical groups a week later, so I had to switch if I wanted to stay with her. Getting records transferred and infection complications caused this delay. I did see my doctor briefly during one of my two additional hospitalizations, but I never even met the nutritionalists at the new center. I'm trying to follow the plan I got from my original center, but it makes me nervous. My appointment with them isn't until 8/2. I'm mostly nervous about a hematoma by my belly button. It's gotten smaller and the bruising is gone, but it's still there. While hospitalized, the doctors didn't seem concerned. They said it didn't show signs of infection on the CT scans and would go away on its own. I did have an infection elsewhere and have been on antibiotics. Anyone else have a lingering hematoma for 5+ weeks?
